Who's your most overrated and underrated players at melbourne

Overrated is Dom Tyson , I say that with the greatest respect because he is still our 2nd best player at 21 and to be honest who else do we rate?
he has a lot to work on IMO with his foot skills, still pretty sloppy at times

Don't get me wrong however he will be a star in the future I just think some of the early hype needs to settle

Grimes + Howe for special mentions

Underrated- Rohan bail, I think he was really important to us last season , is never gonna reach any heights but he did his job week in week out and is always putting on manic pressure
Perfect world he gets pushed out of the team this year for a more talented bloke working just as hard but I wouldn't be surprised to see him play 15+ games again

Special mentions Dean Kent and Lynden Dunn

Overrated: Jack Viney. I think Viney is overrated on his current output. I love his attack on the ball and the man, and his intensity, but I think his disposal can be average at times and he doesn't have enough 'hurt' factor (not the physical stuff). I think he'll become an absolute gun in time, but I think many believe he's already there.

Silver and bronze: Colin Garland and Jack Grimes

Underrated: Nathan Jones. I still think this guy is under appreciated. He's our best player and he's coped with being a one-man midfield for far too long and continually improved year on year. He's got serious inside and outside game now and although most people rate him highly, he's an out and out star imo.

Silver and bronze: Tom McDonald and Max Gawn

Overrated: Dunn. Received a ton of praise and adulation this season but he still has some serious butcher tendencies and is probably the most unreliable shot on goal in the team. Keeping him in defence is the best option but I'd still like to see the starting 22 get strong enough to the point where he's actually competing for a spot. Kicking it out on the full and giving away stupid frees, it still grates me as much now as it did then.

Underrated: Cross. His impact early in the season was very understated, an example is that we wouldn't have won that game against Essendon if it wasn't for him. Salem kicked the goal and got the praise (rightly so too) but it was as much the assisting play as it was the goal. He's a workhorse who won't stop battling and I'd love to see him get a season without injury issues under his belt, we're that much more competitive when he's on the park.

There might be six people on this board that don't hate Grimes, where is he overrated?

I hear his mum thinks he's quite handsome.

I had a bit of a ponder on it yesterday and couldn't come up with anyone overrated, given we lose 9 out of 10 games on average. Other than Jones - who deserves any and all plaudits he gets - not many guys get more than a pass mark on most occasions.

Good thread nick :thumbsu:

To be fair, I don't think we overrate many of our own any more. This time 3 years ago the overrated list would have been almost 35 players long! I also think we've got a pretty good feel for our 'quiet achievers' on this board, and my underrated players are more based on the players notoriety from the rest of the comp..

Overrated
Hogan - purely because he hasn't even played a game yet, and he's being touted by all (including me) as the next coming of Carey. Same might be said for Petracca and Brayshaw, but at least there's hope for each of these guys to live up to the hype one day in the future.
Watts - Only overrated by some, and possibly underrated by others. Unless he can learn to stick a tackle and play a consistent level of footy for the season, then he's overrated by anyone who sings his praises imo.

Underrated
Dawes - gets some stick on on Dees board for being a below average mark above his head and not impacting the scoreboard enough for a key forward, but his work rate is exceptional and his selfless, physical approach and defensive efforts always impress me.
Bail - Not saying he's a star by any stretch. He's not a damaging footballer, simple. However he is a very hard running link man and if he just adds a little composure and hurt factor to his disposal, he could easily be in line for most improved next year imo.
Jetta - Rated highly amongst Dees supporters after a stellar season, but probably needs another year to be noticed by the rest of the comp. His style is hardly going to create a highlight reel, so to be fair, he will probably always be a little underrated outside of the club.
N Jones - Highly rated by all of us, I know. But how he didn't even get onto the AA 40 man squad is beyond me. Quite simply, there are not 40 better players than Nathan Jones in the AFL.

Hogan is overrated. Hasn't played a game but is being slotted into FF for the 22 for all next season. Admittedly we're thin on KPF's who can make a spot their own, but until I see him tear teams apart I think it's unwise to suggest he will (for the next couple of years anyway).
Gawn too I think is a bit overrated. Cult figure =/= gun player.

Bail is underrated. Not flashy or anything, still has his cockups, but was a solid player all last year. The game vs Adelaide he was huge in, won a few very good clearances which set up shots/goals.

Overrated
Dunn. Has played his best in contract years with vast wastelands in between. While possessing a technically good kick, he is unreliable set shot and field kicking is 50/50. Cheap little elbows in the back/kidneys is embarrassing but when posters call him tough, that takes the cake. Dunn's a fraud when it comes enforcer/tough man.

Jack Viney. Still an excellent prospect but his lack of polish with the ball is breaking down plays. Rory Sloane was never a beautiful user of the ball but he has become effective. I think he'll get there.

Underrated
Neville Jetta. Not by MFC supporters but the majority won't see the good work Jetta has done. I'm confident he'll shut down his man and while not prolific is solid on the rebound. This guy is genuinely tough.

Jesse Hogan. Only cause he has been listed 4 times in this thread for been overated. The best 0 game player you'll ever see.

Underrated
Dawes - gets some stick on on Dees board for being a below average mark above his head and not impacting the scoreboard enough for a key forward, but his work rate is exceptional and his selfless, physical approach and defensive efforts always impress me.

Totally agree. Also provides great leadership.

Overrated - Jeremy Howe. Just don't see him as a player with a spot in a successful team long term. One trick pony, albeit with some potential defensive nous developing.

Underrated - I don't think there's really any player on the list right now who deserves more praise than they get. If I had to I'd say Jones is probably slightly. Maybe Jetta.

This is tough, as we only really have 1 player who is universally thought of as a really good player(Jones), while the rest of our players are thought of as duds mostly.

Over rated - I've always thought Colin Garland didn't do a lot. He had a solid 2013, but besides that, really hasn't stood out. His skills are just ok, he lacks aggression, he is an awkward height to play on talls or smalls and doesn't add much run out of defence. I think he'll struggle to cement his spot this year with Frost, Lamumba, McDonald, Grimes, Jetta and Dunn our best back 6 IMO.

Under rated - Tom McDonald. Gets a lot of stick around here, mainly for his skills, which I agree are ordinary. But he's still only 21, and has finished top 10 in our b&f last 3 years including coming 3rd in 2013. He's quick, has the best tank in our side, and is one of the best 1on1 defenders in the comp. and he's got 10 more years ahead of him with still so much more potential. I thought he was superb last season holding down our backline with Frawley MIA down the F50. The kids a gun defender and someone we will build our defence around for a decade. So what if he misses a target every now and again.

The point you make in his defence is actually where I see he is overrated. I agree that he's quick, has a great tank and defends well against players on the lead but I think his defending in a body on body contest needs a lot of work. Too often he gets lost searching for body contact instead of focusing on the ball.

Over - Hogan
Under - Dawes

Liked for the Hogan part, I think Dawes is frustrating to a lot of fans and rightly so.

I'll go with:

Overrated - Hogan (as above)

Underrated - I'm with Stretcharmstrong, I think at least on this board most players who do a good job get recognised. The tendency is definitely to overhype rather than the opposite.
