Can I set up a new partition on my hard drive without reformatting?
I want to experiment with a Linux system without losing what I have now.
As it is , I have C: 10 gig with Windows on there (and 2.5 gig free), and D: 30 gig (with 9.5 gig free). I was hoping to isolate 3 gig on the back end of D: and pop linux in there. Is this possible?

Yes. You want a program called Partition Magic.

Use partition magic. I've done the same thing recently. I was using windows 2000 and preferred to keep the Windows boot loader. When you do the install make sure GRUB or LILO don't install to the MBR but instead go to the boot partition. Make sure you have a good floppy disk because you'll need it to boot into Linux initially. Test the floppy first in Windows by doing an unconditional format of the floppy, I didn't and the floppy didn't work properly meaning I had to reinstall all over again.

Try and get your hands on Knoppix. Its a CD that has Linux on and it runs from your CD, so you dont actually have to install it. You can do C programming and execute linux commands.

Partitioning Windows/Linux gets a bit tricky with disks over 8Gb, if I remember corrcetly?
