As a long standing Norwood supporter, I have always made it a point not to pass favourable comment concerning the Port Adelaide Magpies unless it was absolutely necessary. I have always disliked the club but at the same time found many a reason to admire it, and the people who live within the club.

One such occasion presented itself last week when retiring Port Adelaide Magpies Football Director Paul Belton was interviewed on 5AA radio.

He mentioned the time when Port Adelaide where strapped for cash and badly in need of support in order to survive. He said there were people who had next to nothing who were wanting to give everything they had to help the club.

Paul said he never let on at the time, but he knocked back those offers simply because those people needed the money more than Port Adelaide did.

It made me feel good to know that SANFL clubs were being looked after by people with such high integrity, to place their fans' needs ahead of their own. You can rest assured there would be no current AFL administrator who would feel that way inclined, they would fleece a kid's pocket money without an ounce of guilt.

I would like to thank Paul Belton for his efforts, and wish him all the best for future endeavours. It appears only quality people are leaving the game these days ...... why is that?

A small insight into Paul Belton :

Paul Belton is a deeply religious man, he has had a long association with St. Michaels College in a teaching capacity and otherwise.
His is first and foremost a family man, with a number of children..I think 6 or so .

Pauls sense of fairness and community come before the lust of money.

He is an honourable man.

You sure about the St Pauls connection there PA?

He was a year above me at Blackfriars (missed out on the class action by one year, just to pre emp any smart arse comments) I thought he taught at Blacks.

He was a top footballer at school, going to the maggies in the mid - late 70's.

{btw, whens the lad get back to the Roosters, I understand he's still got a few weeks of school footy to go }

He played for the mighty Roosters against Norwood last week, against Sturt the other week. He'll play this week end , hopefully, but that will probably be it for the rest of the season , because of college comitments.

Thanks for your interest Holly...must catch up for an ale or two before the seasons over..

I meant Paul Belton at Blackfriars, not the lad.

How are St Micks going this year ? About 150 years ago when I went to school it was always a battle between Saints, Prince Alfred & St Micks, had to barrack for the Micks though.(as in catholics)
