A LATE-night snack proved costly for an American poker player when he was robbed at knifepoint after playing in a card tournament at Crown Casino.
Jason Potter, a 22-year-old from Oklahoma, had placed 31st in the popular Aussie Millions tournament of 780 competitors.
Feeling hungry around 4am, Mr Potter left his room in the Crowne Plaza Hotel and headed back towards Crown Casino.
After converting chips worth $30,000 into a mixture of Australian and American dollars, he went to a McDonalds restaurant for a snack.
While returning to his hotel, Mr Potter was hit from behind by an unknown man on Spencer St footbridge.
The assailant, wielding a large 30cm kitchen knife, immediately serached inside Mr Potter's jacket to get the cash, leading the victim to believe that he was watched while cashing in at the casino.
Mr Potter dropped out of a political science degree to concentrate on playing poker full-time, and has won more than $300,000 on the US circuit.
Police are appealing to banks and currency bureaus to report any attempts to exchange large amounts of American dollars.

Pretty stupid to be walking around with 30K in your pocket at 4am no matter where you are in the world.
