Not sure if I am posting this in the correct place but it gets a lot of hits and a lot of questions here get answered really well so thought I'd ask one.

I recently got a job at one of the four big banks. I have to do a Police Check through First Advantage, what do they check for when they do their Police Check on me? Is it just criminal records?

Thank you all.

I thinks its basically just that, criminal records, convictions etc.... if you have a clean record nothing will come up, they'll send you the certificate with something like;

"No criminal record or convictions recorded.. as of.... (whatever date)"

If i remember correctly, i had to do one for my job too.

I smashed a window when I was 16 years old and I am now 23. Would that hinder my chances?
Haven't commit any other crimes since.

Police check doesn't include employment history checks does it? It's through First Advantage..

No worries!

I don't think it would mention anything about smashing a window at 16- Unless you were found guilty of the offence and it made you have a criminal record. But since you haven't committed any crimes since i think you're pretty clear.

Won't include employment history checks, if if your referring to past employment and how long you've been at each job.

Hope not this will mean everything, I was in a car accident on Friday night that was my first dealing with the Police since. Been worried about it all weekend now I have finally gotten some closure. How do you know this? Did you have to do the same thing?

Hey mate!
yeah i had to do a police check with my job about 3 years ago. I'm 23 this year. I haven't had to deal with the police at all (criminal matters) just applied answered some questions and a few weeks later got a cert in the mail with "no criminal record convictions recorded etc"

I'm assuming you'd be doing the same thing i did. Sorry to hear about your accident, but they wont put that in either, for the fact it was an accident.

Hope all this helps buddy!

Yeah, some lady ran a red and T Boned me. No idea how I got up and walked away. Having a baby this year too must of done something good to somebody during the week.

Any idea who done the Police Check? Was it through a company or just from Vic Police?

Ah mate that's unlucky, as long as your all good.

Basically if i remember it was a booklet had "National police check" on it answered some questions personal details like name, address, employer details etc, sent it off.

Im pretty sure, its just through VicPol

outline lines it here:
http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?Document_ID=274

Theres an address on there that tells ya where they do it, costs like 35bucks

Oh. I am doing mine through a company called First Advantage I am worried they will dig up employment records and see somethings I didn't mention to the interviewer. But It's a Police Check, that's what it says on the email. Worried.

correct. Doesn't pull stuff like driving record, parking fines etc. Just guilty convictions.

Didn't see this post. Just what I have been asking the other poster. Police checks don't check anything other than criminal history? Is that correct?

Good. Even with a company like First Advantage I thought they would look at everything not just a police record..

Nup. Not sure why. Maybe invasion of privacy? No one else's business how many speeding fines or parking fines you have. I also think it's a security thing. You're going to be looking at people's data and it's a risk to employ a person with a criminal record (they may use that data, sell it, defraud them etc). How many parking fines someone has has no relevance on their trustworthiness.

What about stuff like how long I said I was at a job and in fact I was not there for the time I said haha?

I have 4 train fines too but like you said it wouldn't be relevant.

I'm pretty sure they also check whether you've been bankrupt. Because in occupations with high amounts of money or responsibility they don't trust someone who needs quick cash lulzz

I did the exact same check about a month ago with one of the banks too.

I've never had any dealings with the police so that was fine, but I could only imagine its to deal with convictions and higher level stuff. Process was actually really easy, upload a few scanned documents of your passport and license, answer a few questions and it's done. No need to have to even go to a police station for it.

Exactly same thing I had to do. Was through First Advantage. Scanned a consent form, license too. I broke a window when I was younger, I have never committed any other crime higher than that. I have never filed bankruptcy I actually don't even know how. Should be fine you think?

I can understand employers doing background police checks on potential employees - as noted above you want to make sure your new employee is trustworthy.

One thing that gives me the shits though is having to get a background check to do anything with kids. My daughters are in girl guides and whenever there's a father/daughter event I, and presumably every other dad going, has to fill out a form and guides get the police to check us all out. For ****s sake, if I was going to molest them I'd do it at home.

If you have to pay for the police check yourself don't forget to keep the receipt/ proof of payment, so you can claim it back on tax.

Just an update, the check is currently underway and will have a result by Tuesday.

I have only commit one crime as stated above. I highly doubt that that will stop them from employing me.

The big banks look for fraud, financial crimes, bankruptcy and worse crimes then a smashed window with a bottle.

Someone tell me I am right for my anxietys sake haha

They are also looking for people who withhold information - eg if they asked you if you had a criminal conviction and you said 'no' it then turns out that you had, it would raise questions of trust. I think that given your conviction was as a minor it will not appear on the police record.

If you were less than honest about your previous employment, make sure you are not found out, it could be grounds for termination of employment.

They asked me if I have ever committed any crimes I said yeah, when I was 16 I broke a window with a bottle. And then they asked if I have filed bankruptcy. That is a no too.

Do you think I will be fine?
