The only reason why the ALP stands a chance of winning the election is because of John Howard's poor leadership and foresight. It's obvious to me that - despite offering better policies and having the runs on the board, Howard's leadership - in particular his friendship with the unpopular President Bush and grievances with Democratic hopefuls, is the only thing that stands in the way of a victory and a 5th term. If the Coalition is defeated at the next election it's because Howard lost the election and not because Rudd or the ALP offer a better alternative.

Hopefully the Coalition gets up and Costello rolls Howard in a leadership battle - Costello is Australia's greatest ever Treasurer and would make a great leader.

If Labor win in October, you'll find me hooning through the streets of Adelaide cracking open a few beers in celebration.

Anyone who thinks Rudd is too dishonoust to become PM after having a few waffles with Burke probably needs to have a brief read of Howard over the past 3 decades. ;)

Gee whiz Gary, you are into your politics!

I wish I had a dollar for every time I saw a poll where the liberal party where behind or that if an election was held today, we would have a change of Government.

We'll see at election time.

It wouldn't be an election year without Labor being ahead in the polls ;)

Gary, this poll has no credibility whatsoever. It is a phone-in poll and thus could be widely variant from the actual situation.

IS there a poll which has been conducted under proper conditions, i.e. random sampling.

Gee whiz Gary, you are into your politics!

Let's call it enthusiasm, frankie. Born in to an extended ALP family, I have every reason to be, given the political landscape presently.

And you would be all the richer if you were to gain a dollar for upcoming polls heading into the election :) .

Looks like the 'honest' ALP have hit a stumbing block;

MP resigns over gangland link

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,21352118-2,00.html

LABOR frontbencher Kelvin Thomson resigned today after it emerged he once provided a reference for one of Australia's most wanted criminals.

The shadow attorney-general said he had resigned because he had provided a letter of reference for fugitive drug baron Tony Mokbel when Mokbel was applying for a liquor licence in 2000.

The letter described Mokbel, a convicted cocaine trafficker with known links to Melbourne's underworld who is currently on the run, as a "responsible, caring husband and father" who was "making a significant contribution to the community".

Mr Thomson said he did not know Mokbel and had not even heard of him at the time, but his office provided the reference as a matter of course, based on information given to them that Mokbel had no criminal record over the previous eight years.

The letter describes Mokbel as a "responsible, caring husband and father".

"As a result of his business and property ventures, Mr Mokbel is making a significant contribution to the community and employing a substantial number of people," the letter says.

Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd said Mr Thomson had made the correct decision in resigning.

"It is unacceptable for a person to be shadow attorney-general and the first law officer of the Commonwealth (and) to have provided a letter of support of this nature," Mr Rudd said.

Mr Thomson said the letter was not as glowing as one he would have written for somebody he actually knew.

"The reference, as you will be able to see, was more of a pro-forma character (reference),'' he said.

"We all learn things from this, I think I'll be putting something on the door saying, 'don't ask for a reference, as a refusal may offend'."

Mr Thomson would not be drawn on whether he would have resigned if this was not an election year, but said he felt he needed to take personal responsibility for the letter.

"It's my reference, I can't, I have no intention of seeking to pass responsibility on to staff in relation to this, the reference has got my name on it," he said.

Mr Thomson said he did not believe he ever met Mokbel or any of his associates after giving him the reference.

"I certainly have no recollection of having met him so I don't believe so," he said.

Mr Thomson said the request for the reference came from Mokbel's solicitor, whose name he could not recall.

"Back in 2000 my office was approached by a solicitor seeking my support for a liquor licensing application," he said.

Mr Thomson said his office had not heard of Mokbel back then.

"The request was put to me as a way of supporting a small business that would employ people in my electorate."

Mr Thomson said his office was not told of Mokbel's 1998 conviction that had been overturned on appeal.

A commodoities boom like this comes along once in a generation its been wasted.
It can make any idiot look like the best treasurer in the world but unless the Government uses the money to make Australia better its totally wasted.
We work harder and have more debt than nearly any other OECD country.
The new work place laws wont make that any better.
We (and the world) are now at a greater risk because we went to an illegal war in Iraq.
The old guy has only just heard about global warming

Its Time for a change.

Yep, get rid of that dumb ass bracks.
Would love it if you could coinvince me with logical thought out response why John the liar Howard should stay and Bracks should go.

Go on Kolchak waiting.....................................

Would labour be any better? So far they have provided little of what their actual policies are. All we hear is the some old stuff - we're going to rip, rip, rip these IR laws rah, rah, rah.

Gary, maybe you can direct me to where labour has outlined its policies? Have they released anything or perhaps they are waiting until closer to the election.

The structure of the ALP is the most democratic of all political forums in Australia in that policies formed by its National Policy Committee will go before the upcoming ALP National Convention.

I say most democratic as the NPC considers input from individuals, party units, and organisations as a part of the consultation process. Unlike the coalition which is dictated to by Little Honest Johnny Howard.

The NPC invites submissions from the following:-

  • Rank and file members
  • Party branches and sub-branches
  • State and Territory policy committees
  • Affiliated trade unions
  • Parliamentarians
  • Affiliated or kindred organisations of the labour movement, active community groups and progressive think-tanks

The National Policy Committee is responsible for:

  • Coordinating development of the National Platform
  • Conducting ongoing reviews of the National Platform
  • Preparing the draft National Platform for consideration by National Conference
  • Actively participating in the formulation of policy at National Conference
  • Taking into account all policy resolutions passed by State and Territory Conferences
  • Considering all policy resolutions sent to it by State and Territory Policy Committees and other constituent units
  • In conjunction with State and Territory Policy Committees, conducting regular policy forums in which rank and file participation is encouraged

The NPC meets regularly to work on the development of a draft National Platform for the 2007 National Conference, and to consider submissions from branches, policy committees, affiliated unions, state and territory conferences and community partners.

The PM is elected by the people the Labor caucus is not, so interfacto, it is less democratic. Nice post all the same GS, you put some thought into that.

I beg to differ kolchak, I have never had the opportunity to vote for who becomes prime minister - just my local member, who then may get an opportunity to vote to elect the prime minister as part of the parliamentary party. This is no different for any party. If Howard falls tommorrow, you or I do not get to vote for Abbott, Costello, Turnbull, etc.

The party elect thier leader, the ministers who vote have all been elected by us. The leader is able to pick a team that will work together and who are the best at what they do. Whereas the Labor party have interest groups and unions picking the ministers who fit in with them, whether they are the best ministers or not does not make a difference. What stucture would you rather be a part of.

The system is failing
Reith,Ruddock, Vanstone,Vaille,Santoro, Campbell ,Bishop,Abbott,Petrogeorgio.

Major problems with the leader too

Australia is ready for a change the polls are saying it.
When The Hero/Mouthpiece of Right Wing Non Thinking Conservatives Andrew Bolte has said "...he senses a need for change" and "...Rudd is a good leader."and "...the party is crumbling from within"

Sounds like the "Its Time"

Perhaps you confuse the caucas with the factions my friend. In any case these 'faceless' men of the labor party have been revealed to even the most ignorant of people during consecutive defeats of the Labor party.

I don't like the system because it rewards mediocrity for your beliefs over your talent, ie: left, centre or right. However you can not tell me in any way shape or form that the conservatives are any different.

Perhaps Petro Georgio may be the only conservative who can hold his head high at the moment.

Shadforth,

The politically correct left wingers forget that Rudd has captured the popular attention and favour (the former must precede the latter - take note Kim Beazley) because he has moved Federal ALP policies sharply to the right.

If the ALP had voted for a socialist as its leader such as lil Jenny Mackin or Mother Russia Julia Gillard, it would still be in the electoral doldrums.

Australian popular and political culture has moved strongly to the right and this is Howard's ultimate triumph. Whether he is booted or re-elected, this salient fact remains. You cannot do anything about it.

I agree with that, case in point the Mark Latham disaster.

At the moment Rudd is 'out Howarding' John Howard at the moment and at the moment its succeeding, but there is still a long gap between now and the next election. Given the ALP’s history of leading the polls only to be out trumped by the Coalition at the election, the ALP supporters shouldn’t be counting their chickens before they hatch.
