Just started listening to some of these guys songs on youtube and I'm impressed. Anyone recommend some of their better albums? They have a large compilation...

+1 for In Absentia and also Lightbulb Sun. Real good albums.

Lead singer Steven Wilson has done quite a bit of solo stuff as well and it's a bit hit and miss but I really liked Grace For Drowning. It's not overly easy stuff to go into. Definitely not Sunday morning come down music.

In Absentia is my favourite PT album, followed by Lightbulb Sun and Deadwing. The last couple of albums have their moments but also fall flat at times. Don't own any of their real early stuff, even though I should.

Also if you ever break up with a chick don't listen to the last track off Lightbulb Sun called Feel So Low for an extended period. Fantastically beautiful tune but right at the top of the chain for depressing heart string pullers.

I'll have to have a listen to Grace for Drowning. The only non-PT stuff of Wilson's I've got is Storm Corrosion with Akerfeldt, which is possibly the most boring album I own unfortunately.

Grace for Drowning I wouldn't say is the most exciting album ever but I liked it. I definitely wouldn't listen to it in the hour or so before heading for a romping night on the piss with the lads.

Your avatar is a blurred copy of A Natural Disaster yeah? Great album, great band. Did you get tickets to Anathema later in the year? First ever aussie shows.

For those that like Wilsons solo collaborations should check out his work with Aviv Geffen and Blackfield. 4 solid and listenable albums .

A lot of my favourite PT songs are the slower or longer tracks, so will have to look closer into the solo stuff.

Correct on the avatar (Has been blurred since the change of site format, I really should try to fix it). Still weighing up whether or not I should come to Melbourne for that gig, but seriously considering it. (they're not coming to Adelaide which i'm pissed about). Just got back from 3 weeks o/seas so not great timing as far as leave and money goes. Will you be seeing them?

yep got tickets for the corner in melbourne. should be good. have seen them live on youtube and they look pretty good. obviously not a bounce around and mosh band but should be good quality.

Once upon a time I listened to them quite a lot, but it's not a sound that has aged with me all too well (reeeally have to be in the mood to listen to them nowadays, Wilson's lyrics are leave-brain-at-the-door material a lot of the time). Deadwing was my favourite. The only other ones I ever owned were Fear of a Blank Planet (rather excellent concept album, I remember playing the title track at least a hundred times), The Incident (sprawling but very hooky) and Lightbulb Sun (only listened to a couple of times but it was okay). Never got around to In Absentia.

Steven's solo stuff is great as well, enjoyed Grace for Drowning a lot around release.

Sadly, the sound doesn't quite do it for me nowadays, I probably won't bother with the next PT (if there ever is one, which looks unlikely in the short-term). That said, occasionally when in the mood their 2000s work is rather stunning. Even if I struggle to get through a full album nowadays, some songs in isolation are amazing.

Steven Wilson has somewhat backed away from Porcupine Tree in recent times and has no plans on doing anything with that project in the near future.
I've loved his solo and collaboration with Akerfeldt as Storm Corrosion.
Wilson is currently mixing the new Opeth album due for release in a few months time.

In Absentia, I agree is the most accessible and may be the best entry point for a new fan although I feel Fear of a Blank Planet is their best.
How can you go past this?

Great fan of PT & SW.

Started with Fear of a Blank Planet then onto In Absentia, Dead Wing, The Incident, Nil Recurring and Lightbulb Sun. All the other material predating those albums I found a bit too experimental and could never really connect with.

In Absentia I rate as their best album in their catalogue with a great mix of songs and range of emotions can be felt.

Their two live releases are fantastic with Arriving Somewhere and Anesthetize
so much so that I took the sound track of the DVD's and converted it to MP3 file for my music player.

Finally got to see them live in Melbourne during the Incident Tour.

Then I moved onto the SW releases including the live DVD, You Get All You Deserve. Which was perfect timing as SW was about to tour Australia and I got to the show in Melbourne.

His collaboration with Michael Akerfeldt in Storm Corrosion was a bit meh but liked the song Drag Ropes.

Speaking of Michael Akerfeldt, his band Opeth is pretty good too. I only have a few albums Ghost Reveries, Watershed and Heritage but got see them live in Melbourne whilst I was there for the Australian GP. Loved the show.

Porcupine Tree were one of the first 'cool' bands I ever got into.

I remember buying Fear of a Blank Planet in 2007 and giving it a fair bashing. If nothing else it lead me to bands like Isis, Cult of Luna and Pelican, but it still stands as a pretty impressive LP.

In fact, PT are remarkably consistent and although I've never given them my full and undivided attention, I can appreciate the brilliance of Stupid Dream and In Absentia and Deadwing. My younger brother is always listening to them.

I listened to The Raven That Refused To Sing a couple of months ago and that was a pretty sweet LP also.
