Did anyone see Powderfinger on Saturday or Sunday night? I went Sunday night, and words can't describe how good they were. Absolute brilliance. Definitely got my money's worth, as they played for about 2 hours and did 18 songs. For any PF fans that didn't go, you really missed out! (sorry ;)) The piano version of These Days was absolutely incredible (as was the way the crowd sung with it...), and the crowd reaction to Passenger was not something I expected - probably the biggest cheer of the night. I was disappointed that they didn't play Up & Down & Back Again, one of my faves, but they well and truly made up for it. I would also like to have seen d.a.f. and The Day You Come, but they'd already said earlier this year they weren't going to do those two so at least I wasn't let down there.

The set list (Sunday night) was:

    For anyone who went Saturday, is this pretty much the same? The cheering in between On My Mind and Pockets, when they left the stage and left us all in darkness (when plenty of people seemed to think it was over), was absolutely deafening. Unbelievable, spine-tingling stuff. :) It surprised me that they did Pockets, I wouldn't have thought it'd come off live, but they definitely made it work! Ahh...I'm in withdrawal now!
 
I hate paying for concerts where the crowd sings instead of the artist. If I wanted to hear a poorly song version, I'd watch Australian Idol or go watch a cover band.

That's your problem. It's not like you couldn't hear Bernard or the piano...

It's simply one of those songs where everyone just has to sing...:o

Here's a tip, if you aren't interested in something, stop continually posting in threads about it/them.
 
BomberGal, don't make me cry!!! i am a huge pfinger fan( as you can see by my nick!), but couldn't make it for the weekend. I saw them earlier this year on their album launch, but they only played a handful of the new songs...still awesome, and im sure nothin like what they did on the weekend.
Reckon theyll bring out a dvd?
And how did the crowd react to pockets? I would have loved to see it.

The crowd reaction to Pockets was massive, but I think that was because it was the first song they did when they came back on stage. Some of the reactions to the non-singles were a little disappointing though, there were a few people around who clearly only knew the big ones and I wanted to hit them. :mad: Pockets was very interesting...it wasn't as quiet as what it is on the album (it probably wouldn't work if you left it the same), and you know that bit just before it gets loud (from about 2:50 into the song til 3:10)? That was unbelievable. I can't explain how it sounded, it just got louder and louder and louder...just this one big sound, and I got completely lost in it...and then bang, into the song again, with powerful guitar. Awesome. :)

Do it in your car then, just not in my face, and especially when I'm not paying $100 to see a band.

This wasn't a comment re: Powderfinger, it happens at most concerts.

a) You missed my point that it's one of those songs you have to sing to. And it was only one song where the singing was that loud.

b) I don't get the problem if people singing doesn't make a difference to how well you hear the artist. At PF, you could hear them perfectly, but you could tell people were singing. Big deal.

If you don't want to sing, and just listen, do that in your car. One of the main things about concerts is the way you can be involved with the music.

Im not the biggest Powderfinger fan but i brought the new cd the next day, thats how good they were!.

Money well spent if you ask me1
 
How good was Don't Wanna be Left Out? (I wasn't there I'm actually asking) I love that song, but I imagine it would be brilliant live.

The whole kit and kaboodle was tip top. its extra special when they play Brizroy, being the home crowd.

His Mum was there and he made the crowd sing happy bday for his mummie:p

a) it's not a smidgen of what Wonderwall is, and even at Oasis concerts, I don't feel I just have to spoil the experience of paying to see a band for me and 50,000 others.

No, nothing is like Wonderwall. But to Powderfinger fans, These Days is the equivalent.

And still you ignore my point. The singing didn't 'spoil' anything. You weren't there. Don't tell me the song was worse for the singing. In fact, it was all the more beautiful, but I'm not gonna expect you to understand...

Went on Saturday...didn't mind it, but the missus loved it. Too tame for my liking. Ockers/bogans can't mosh properly without aiming to hurt or resorting to fights, not that there was much to mosh to, but the no moshing signs were a bit sad.

Still, a good gig.
 
I saw them on Sunday and as I said in another thread "they went off. They fired up 10,000 people in the audience and had them eating out of their hands for their big hits.

That many people singing along to every word can't all be wrong".

It certainly doesn't spoil the concert for me when crowds sing along to the big anthems.

On the odd occasion they looked like a pub band up on the big stage, but the highlights really overshadowed that.

Bernard Fanning is their edge, maybe just gotta work on the patter a bit instead of the usual "How ya doin" or "Your gunna f***in love it".

BomberGal, I thought that song was Rio, not Rear.

Yeah, I would agree - one of his lines in between songs was, "Ahh...well um...that was f***ing great..." which did make them seem a bit overwhelmed by the stage. Still, didn't seem to affect actual performance of the music, which is what matters.

Rio - Duran Duran?

Maybe all the crowd singing spoilt the song for you, and you couldn't hear it properly.

  1. I saw them in Adelaide on Friday night and the setlist was identical to that (including order) except instead of Since You've Been Gone, we got Already Gone.

    The song your not sure of, if its the same as the one we got, its on the limited edition DVD and Bernard introduced it as 'a sort of country and western song' and Darren had to give up on the organ after a false start.

    Yeah, an awesome show. One of the best i've been to.

:eek: Lucky! Now I'm jealous! I love that song...and they'd said in an interview earlier in the year they wouldn't be playing much older stuff. :( Grrr.

Crowds don't sing along to songs they don't know.

And most of the crowd were too young to know Duran Duran's Rio (until they go see Robbie and Duran Duran tonight).

I went on Friday night, and, yeah, the list was pretty much the same. I thought they were awesome, and excellent live. I really liked the John Butler Trio previous as well.

Bernards' version of These Days live was excellent and definitely got the biggest sing along of the night. Pockets and My Kind of Scene were great too.

I thought they wouldn't play too much old stuff either, so I was thrilled when they played some of the songs from their previous albumss, like Already Gone and especially Passenger.

Definitely a good show live and worth the $60. Outdoor shows rock.
