Who has been the greater modern Aussie rock band. Consider both have similar popularity and similar achivements.

One used to suck, and they've become progressively better and more interesting.

The other used to be good and interesting, and now they suck.

Which is which?

This will be interesting...

;)

The first would be Silverchair? If you're talking about Diorama...

Not much a fan of either myself

Powderfinger were good at first, then became another anthemic bogan rock band.

silverchair were terrible at first, then somehow found some soul amidst the anorexia and became good.

Powderfinger haven't had anywhere near the success silverchair has (to the OP) btw.

Powederfinger have improved with time. Started off as a weak sounding pub band and have grown into a solid sounding rock outfit that has their own original sound (unlike say Jet). Bernard Fanning's vocals are exceptional.

Silverchair have always sucked. Great achievements when they were all 14 but at the end of the day Johns has a limited monotone voice and ordinary lyrical ability. All their early stuff sounded the same as a lot of stuff in the charts at the time.

Waht's original about Powderfinger?

They have their own sound. Rather than have a whole new sound or genre.

It's not like when you listen to Jet or Lenny Kravitz and can hear so much Beatles and Stones and AC/DC etc. Like any band you can hear some influences here and there but essentially it is there own. Not new, but their own.

You're kidding aren't you?

Powderfinger improved with time? Double Allergic was by far the best powderfinger album because it was raw. Every album since has been overproduced and polished within an inch of its life.

Powderfinger are the Aussie version of Tonic, Matchbox 20, Train etc. Silverchair, well if you enjoy watching Michael Jacksonesque excercises in ever increasing eccentricity and physical deterioration, except orchestrated to a rock soundtrack good luck to you. Daniel Johns is the consumate, pretentious knob.

Not a fan of either but Powderfinger really suck. They are for people who think Journey or Reo Speedwagon are hard rock.
Or maybe they are for people who just enjoy their music

Silverchair > Powderfinger

Daniel Johns isn't afraid to explore. Take some risks. Do something different. Everyone should own Diorama - it is a journey, and for mine the greatest Australian album ever made.

I like Powderfinger at their best. Yeah, they're safe, but their music is enjoyable. Earlier stuff is better, but Vulture Street had some great tracks.

Is supposed to be positive for Powderfinger? They are all vanilla bands with very pedestrian music.

Silverchair are far from my favourite, but their music is interesting (Diorama)

I'd disagree. I used to think that but gradually changed my view. Internationalist had me thinking, "Meh, not bad, a bit too much the same as everyo other crap adult contempory artist like MB20, and are limited by Fanning's voice".

Odyssey 5 had me thinking, "Better, but still a bit boring and still unsure if Fanning has enough variety in his vocals to go further"

Vulture St had me thinking, "These guys have proven me wrong. They've written a good rocking album that isn't soft like their early stuff and not over produced like Odyssey 5. Fanning has shown he has an excellent set of vocals".

I despise your matchbox 20s, tonics, creeds etc and don't see how they can put in the same genre after Vulture St.

His sexuality.

Or more to the point; put on some make up and talk in a gay voice when he's not gay for whatever reason I guess only he'd know. What a spaaanker.

I'd call that an insult. I thought they were heading that way early but where they're at now is not the same place. Different music, different image, different persona.

But same musical blandness im afraid.

Not really, no.

I don't have a problem if you accuse Powderfinger of being bland (because I find everything up to Vulture St quite bland) but they are different to those bands mentioned.

Creed
Powderfinger
REM
Jack Johnson
Alex Lloyd

All can be accused of being bland but all are different. Although I dislike REM, JJ, and Al, I wouldn't put them in the same group as Creed and Matchbox 20 etc
