Why do people have such a poor opinion of Private Schools and people who go to them/or have been. I got called a Private School ****er on the weekend and found it very offensive.

I went to a pretty good public school over here in WA and I think that one of the things most of us had against Private school kids was that they were complete bastards when they came to our school. I think the problem was that if a private school kid was acting up or got expelled, rather than sending them to another private school, their parents would send them to a public school. So when we did get these kids coming in from private schools they were all spoilt rich kids who were absolute tryhards. I guess that sorta lead to the stereotyping of all Private School kids.

The same reason people have a poor opinion about people with money. Tall poppy syndrome basically.

The general perception is that private school educated people have been born with a spoon in their mouths and are ignorant to the plight of the average person (they are percieved as arrogant). Private schools, although they provide an excellent education, are the eptomy of elitism. Top boy's private schools breed the "boys club" culture.

All schools have their pros and cons, but if you weigh it up and you have the cash (about 10k p.a.), a private school provides a better opportunity and better education than the average state school.

How did the person know you were from a Private School?

There's no difference between discriminating against a person on the basis of which school they went to and which suburb they live in.

I went to a Private School. We used to cop some crap from State School students at times when we were in uniform in the city or at shopping centres etc. But I have never had any flak from anyone since I left school.

It depends - there are private schools and private schools.

If its one of those where they wear pooncy blazers and 1920's type straw hats, then it's students deserve what they get.

They tend to be silver spoon daddy's boys who think that they are born to rule.

You can't blame state school kids whose schools don't have ovals or halls to get a bit peed off seeing these characters who have school ski chalets and swimming pools and turf cricket nets, while still geting government grants, swanning about.

Author's note - I went to a state school with no oval or hall ;)

Just one point TC - whilst I dont know the financial details regarding grants put towards private schools, as opposed to how much it is costing the Government to run public schools, you must remember that Private School childrens parents pay taxes too, surely its only "just" that their children get some benefit out of it also. If a parent wishes to spend $10K a year on a school which has a swimming pool and ski chalet, surely thats their choice, no different than them spending $10K on a swimming pool for their backyard.

I personally went to a Catholic School in regional Victoria whose fees were about $500/year, and there were concessions available for parents who couldnt afford to pay that.

The main dislike I have for the so called "elite" private schools is the "boys club" mentality that boys schools seems to foster. I also dont think isolating males and females during the teen years is beneficial to a childs social development

No argument Sly - not saying I don't think private schools deserve funding, just that I understand resentments.

I agree that separate boys and girls schools are unhealthy (although I think that separate classes within a co-ed school can be a good thing).

PS. When I was at school we used to have great fun pinching private school kids hats and throwing them under buses/setting fire to them etc, but I am much older & wiser now

From prep to year 6 I went to a Catholic co-ed school. From year 7 to year 12 I went to a Catholic girls school. I don't think my social development was hindered in anyway from not having boys at my school.

I don't have a real problem with private schools. I go to a public school, and the only problem I have is certain people from private schools who spend their entire time bagging public schools. Private schools tend to think they are so much better than public schools - and that's what annoys me. There is an ad on the radio here that advertises a private Catholic school, naming all the benefits of that school...I was both offended and humoured...because our school offers all those things as well.

I go to a Private School and I hate the stereotyping generalising that you get for it.

That's one of the main reasons im looking forward to graduating in November.

John Howard is giving too much funding for private schools at the moment.

His thinking is, "Private schools give a better education, so if we increase funding to private schools (at the expense of public schools), then more families will be able to afford their kids a private education".

My thinking is this; Every Australian kid deserves the best education possible. The problem with John Howards policy is that the standard of public schooling is dropping. This will affect the lower income brackets who still won't be able to afford private schooling. Apart from that, there seems to be an increasing number of private schools popping up (esp. religous oriented ones). A lot of these schools are only marginally better than some public schools (and some not even that), therefore watering down the standards of private schools as well.

The majority of govt. funding should go to improving the public school system. The good private schools have enough money to maintain their standard, but the mediocre ones may struggle (something has to be sacrificed here for the benefit of the majority).

Everyone should have access to the best possible public education, and if peope want something slightly better, then they can pay through the nose to get it.

I go to a prive school, and can definitely see why people sometimes have a problem with the students that attend the school.
Some of the girls at my school are the most self righteous little cows you could ever meet, and the thing is, it frustrates me because even though they do not learn anything at the school, because they never actually turn up to classes - it wont be a problem for them because they can just ask daddy for some more money, and if worse comes to worse, work for daddy's company after school.

I went to a private school from kinder to grade 12 and I agree with Nick the pie man. You all think that us private school kids our stuck up...well were not! We have to work hard because if we dont our parents remind us that it costs heaps to send us to the school and that we ought to work hard because of that! It isnt easy!

I go to a private school and my class went out on an excursion and we were talking to some kids from a private school that was based in the city and their teacher came over and told them to stop talking to us because my school is in Broadmeadows. So sometimes it just depends where your private school is situated.

Everyone should have access to the same standard of education regardless of their financial position. At the moment, the ones who are able to pay up are getting the better deal. Is that fair?

I go to a public school. Resources and facilities are uncomparable with your average private school, but we get by. It does get a bit annoying though, having to put up with a footy ground with 1 goalpost at either end. We've only just raised the funds to fix it and now we have four at one end and one up the other! Air conditioners and heaters have only JUST been installed (schools about 25 years old) and barely work.

But, Im not complaining, as long as there's an even playing field which there's not. It carries through to the actual education side of things as well. There needs to be an even playing field if there's to be real fairness.

Way back in the mists of time when I went to school, I think it made less difference on the actual educational side. My public school was, admittedly, one of the better ones in the area, but while facilities were poor the uni matriculation rate was very high and the teachers very good.

Now, however, I think with more talented kids and good teachers being sucked into private schools, and selective state schools, there is a bigger gap, with all the less academic kids and inexperienced teachers being dumped together. So as well as bad facilities they get a poor education.

i got to a public High school. There are about 3-4 private schools around my area, but no one gives them ****... they are normal people who cares if they go to a private school, at least they are going to have a good education. I know LOTS of people who go to the private schools and all my cousins do.

It's all perception, and it goes both ways.

Private schoolkid's may take their education for granted. Hell, they're not paying for it, and they probably see themselves above public school gits who don't pay and apparently don't have the same standard of education.

Public schoolkid's may look at the private schoolkid and think "what a coat-tailing prat!", when it's not their fault that the parents wanted to fork out money that they earned trying to give their child the alleged best chance at education.

And this is where the problem is. I'm a public schoolkid doing year 12, and I live in Dandenong. Perception? I'm a poor bum who couldn't afford a train ticket to Toorak. Truth? I'm gunning for a course at RMIT where the overwhelming majority of private schoolkid's won't have a hope of getting into.

People think education or where you live automatically puts you in a certain class. Wrong. I have dreams, and I plan to live up to my ambitious aims. They might be lower than some others, they might be higher than others. But I can tell you that my dreams aren't the norm, and while I hate my suburb, I can't stand it when people automatically label me after learning I go to a public school in the north of Dandenong.

It goes both ways, and they're both wrong.

I'd like to see a detailed study on the difference between employment prospects for private v public educated people.

I perceive that privately educated kids get a better chance in the job market and go further in their careers. If I had kids I would have no hesitation about sending them to a private school, no matter the cost, even though when I was younger I thought only ****ers went to private schools.

i go to waverley collegein the eastern suburbs of sydney. compared to other private schools is it is a more working class private school - one of the least expensive private schools in Sydney.

I really hate it to say the least when people call us stuck up pricks. It doesn't usually happen, at least not when i'm around, but when time i was walking home 2 or 3 public school guys were standing around and when i walked past they go 'look at this waverley f4ggot' well it was on for young and old then :D probably didn't come off looking the best but i made my point clear. (its also funny how the only time it's ever happened was when there was less of me  )
