After seeing the list of players de-listed I saw a few I wouldnt mind in blue next season.
Simon Buckley: 190cm midfielder, could go forward looks like a good player if he can keep injury free.
Current Ability: B-
Buckley managed 14 matches for the year, and provided one of the few reasons for excitement amongst Melbourne fans. He averaged 21 disposals per match, which was an excellent return for a player with his experience. He was utilised mainly in the half-back position, but also spent some time on the wing.
Strengths:
- Pace
- Reads the play well
- Ball winner
- Bold style of play (i.e. takes on defenders)
- Good size
- Flair
- Long kick
Weaknesses:
- Kicking accuracy
- Decision making
- Accountability
Potential Ability: A
I know this is high but I really believe he could be a top-line player. He has all of the necessary characteristics of a match winner. The first key area he needs to work on is kicking. There is no doubt that he has a long/penetrating kick, but accuracy and effectiveness are issues for him here. As he seems to be more of an outside player, this facet of the game is crucial for his development.
Scott Simpson: 196cm foward, looks impressive worth a punt at only 20 years of age, Back when contested marking was the number 1 requirement in a tall forward Simpson would have nudged the top-10. He is the best contested marker in the 2007 draft. Unfortunately the AFL refuse to kick to contests and expect there forwards to get into space on their own. Simpson doesn’t quite do enough away from the packs. Needs to improve his recovery, make some 2nd and 3rd efforts, win some footy with chasing and tackling. His one trick is a good one, just needs some stuff to fall back on when the marks aren’t sticking. In the AFL guys will play him tight, spoil, and make him look a clown going the other way.
Ant555: Scott Simpson-194cm, 91kg-Dandenong Stingrays. (Fwd). Good contested marking forward who is a reasonable goal kicker. He has played a bit in the ruck as well but I am not sure he will be big enough to ruck at AFL level. Like Gaertner he looks like he is about to tear a game apart at times but it never really seems to happen. The way he moves around and plays I think he has a huge upside if he can find some consistency.
Dan McKenna: 195cm versatile player, only 20 years old Good overhead and agile type who can also play back. Noted goalkicker who represented Vic Country at Under 18 level this year
"Ant555: Dan McKenna-194cm, 82kg-Gippsland Power. (FWD / BCK). Has had a bit of an up and down year playing in a strong side. Has been used at CHF and CHB during the year. Had some good early form as a key forward but it has dropped of a little as the season has gone on. Had a reasonable time at the Champs without being a star. Has shown some sort of ability to read the play as a back man and he can spoil well if needed. Is pretty lightly built at the moment.
"
"TOA: I realised the need to go for a key position prospect here and thought McKenna was well suited. He is up and down, lacks intensity but could really turn it on in the future. Has all the elements; 194cm, v.good pace, clean hands, nice spoil and can play in any KP role. He could be something pretty special or could be another McDougall. I personally think the draft is thinning out by now and I'm looking at upside.
Simpson & McKenna never got a chance and look good, Buckley looks alright worth a punt IMO What do you think? or are there better players we could get?
and what picks do we have in the PSD?
