as a hard-core richmond fan i seen many people under-mining raines and sayin he hasnt got what it takes! makes me furious when people say this cuse of his efforts on feild and his 1st year in the afl how tanlented he is and how much he shows the backline and other possies how to play the game as of the modern eira. i thought he was shafted in the nab rising star awards and should have much more recognition and will show what hes made of in years to come.

wat tugga said. Most of the opposition supporters I've come into contact with love Raines and think he is great. Many wish they had him at their club:D

yeah i guess but the spot light and attention he gets is low and its pathetic for such a high skilled player

I worry that with still only one good year under his belt that he is being over-rated.
He seems to have the right attitude and his 2006 was excellent but he gets spoken of as an outright superstar which he is not , not yet anyway.

no chance he dusnt get enuff i dun think he has been named a future star but nothin much else

needs more midfield time and has to limit all his hospital passes

great heart though

Needs to improve his disposal dramatically IMO.

But i agree get him in the midfield, he is almost 21 so its time to see what he's got. Get someone like Matty White or Oakley Nicholls in the BP and have Rainesy move up the ground.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves... one good season, doesnt make you a great player. I love the guy, but he needs to show consistency over a long period of time, before he'll get the pats on the back from the opposition. And that is totally understandable.

It wasn't his 1st year FYI.

No one has bagged him on here.

Nice effort fishing for compliments Rainsey, but shouldn't you be at training?

I think that statement's a bit dramatic. He is on the league average of 4 out of 5 effective disposals. He blazes away sometimes but at least the kick is usually long. That should change with game experience.

Yeah, also some of these errors are because he is actually taking risks by running around players and like anyone taking risks, occasionally he gets caught and coughs up a bad handball. Kicking is average, but not everyone can be above average. other areas of his game make up for it though.

Agreed. I think he needs to improve his decision making. When to run, when to give up the ball quickly, when to pass, when to take on the man etc. He will surely get better with experience.

I also wonder if he (like Pat Bowden) is a little over-rated. Sometimes the role a guy is asked to play can end up flattering him a little. There are a lot of touches available to a modern defender. Raines is a guy that we look to give the ball to ... it might be a bit different if he actually had to win his own footy.

Personally I'd be happy with him spending another year in the BP. There is a long list of guys from Adam Simpson through Nathan Bourke who had their 80-100 games in the back-pocket to develop the experience, skills and fitness before going to midfield.

yeah he might be a good option to place him in the mid-feild and build his skills and decision making but also rest him or switch him up back in a more deep defensive role to gain experience in both mid feild and defence. it will give him more of an understanding on how a mid fieilder is ment to play and him being a defender will help the mid feild out as his skill in the back line is far more higher than that of a full time mid feilder.

Pat Bowden isn't overrated.

He has found his perfect postion; allows him to show off his hight/skills/pace. Being soft isn't too important in that rebounding role.

Best 1/2 I've ever seen from a footballer was Pat Bowden against the Lions @ TD last season.

Took at least 6 goals-saving marks in the square.

That is exactly why Pat Bowden is over-rated. He is not a 25-touch player, he is not a key member of the 18. He is a guy in his perfect niche and flattered by his role.

When Mark Chaffey got the role, he was a 20 touch back-pocket (who kicked the ball to the opposition). You could take Pat Bowden out of that spot and put Pettifer, Tuck, Deledio etc there and not lose any drive from the backline.

On the other hand we won't get much from B2 in the midfield unless someone feeds him the pill.

That is what we have to see with Raines. How much is the role, and how much is the kid?

I'd never say he is under rated. He starred last year.

I love the way he runs at the ball and takes on his opponents.

I do agree, however, that he needs to work on his disposal.
