Of course we have to guess a bit but I would say
1) 2001
2) 2006
3) 2004
4) 2005
5) 2007
6) 2000
7) 2003

Not a lot of luck with our rookies but overall an awesome effort with 2003 the only dud year and that was dud for everyone. Hard to rate 2007 but I am confident that Taylor, S.Simpson, Moles and Mumford can all make it at AFL level. We've done very well at the trade table too picking up Ottens, Mooney & Harley.

Well put. 2007 looks great but is still speculation. I think all the talls are good kicks so at worst will good trade bait. Our scouts deserve all the kudos they get. Especially how we didn't "bottom-out" like the Weagles, Tiges and Blues did. Or is my memory failing me? BTW, who's responsible for finding Harry Taylor?!?!:D

And, yeah: Ottens for Moloney has worked a treat. Does anyone remember who we got when Colbert went north?

We got Mooney for sure and I think we got Spriggs at pick 15.
We traded mansfeild and got Chapman for the draft pick.
I made a mistake above too. Chapman was a 99 draftee that was Sam Chapman??

We traded Colbert and pick 53 (Clayton Lasscock) for Mooney, pick 15 (David Spriggs) and pick 47 (Corey Enright).

We won :D

Yep.

We traded Mansfield (and his massive contract) to Carlton, for pick 31 in 1999, which we used on Paul Chapman.

Going off topic a little, but 1999 was a weird draft, with the second half of it arguably producing more quality players than the first half (father-son's excluded).

Quality players chosen in the first 30 picks of 1999:

Josh Fraser
Paul Hasleby
Matthew Pavlich
Leigh Brown
Joel Corey
Luke McPharlin
Darren Glass
Robert Murphy
Brad Green
Paul Wheatley
Adam Hunter

Quality players chosen after pick 30 in 1999 draft:

Paul Chapman
Daniel Giansiracusa
Leon Davis
Mitch Hahn
Cameron Ling
David Hille
Lindsay Gilbee
Corey Enright
Chance Bateman
Matthew Whelan
Ryan O'Keefe
Ben Johnson
Cameron Bruce
Ryan Hargrave
Ryan Houlihan

Pickers just compared our 99 and 01 draft with the Dees on Leagues Teams.

We win.

Pickers also said how sad it is that they didnt pick up me in the 99 Draft,
I sent them a tape and everything, didnt even get a thanks but no thanks letter :(

That 2003 draft was a bit of a shocker all round. I think Healy wrote a piece on that draft a month or so ago.

It doesn't make for great reading.

But we have all said this time and again, Wells and his team do a great job with the later picks Geelong has had.

If not the best in the business they'd certainly be right up there.

2003 wasn't great looking at the players we drafted, however if you looked at the list of players taken that year I don't think we overlooked any superstars either.

The year we traded for Mitchell White and Justin Murphy is the only blot on the copybook IMO.

However they did trade Murphy back to Carlton and ended up landing Steve Johnson as a result....

Just out of curisoity, has Stephen Wells been the recruiting manager for all these drafts? His certainly has done a great job spotting the talent and I hope the club does whatever is possible to stop any of the other clubs poaching him from us :D

Yep, I did mean that the 2003 draft for all clubs, not just Geelong, was a pretty ordinary crop.

From memory, the main stand out was Adcock who went in the 40s or 50s I think.

On the Mooney/Colbert deal. Wasn't Kent Kingsley part of the trade as well? He made his debut for North in '99 (kicked six goals in his first game- half a John Coleman effort:eek::D!!) then came over to us at the same time as Mooney.

Didn't he?

P.S I was living in the U.K in '99, so I've a ready-made excuse for having no knowledge of this period:thumbsu:

No, Kent was swapped for a pick in the 40's. He came the year we got Murphy and White.

Murphy was traded back to carlton for pick 23 which was used to draft Charlie Gardiner. obvouisly charlie didn't turn out to be the top 25 pick Geelong had hoped for and is still battling away to get a game at St.kilda! so Geelong really didn't get anything good out of the trade of murphy back to carlton imo.

The Kingsley deal was slightly different.

We traded pick 42 for Kent and pick 44.

They used pick 42 on Daniel Pratt (who they delisted and then got back later), we used pick 44 on Josh Hunt.

Cheers for clearing that up. I always found it hard to believe North would give up two extremely handy players for Colbert - young but injury-prone champ that he was at the time:thumbsu:

yeah White was a risk coz of his injuries and age. we desperately needed another tall though and i dunno who else were could court.

Murph was a weird one, eh?.. i thought he'd slot in nicely - being a cats supporter as a kid. but he never settled. it's different for a geelong player than at any other club i reckon - more "under the microscope".

would be similar for a Tassie player if, i'd guess too - if they ever start an AFL team down there!
