What's the consensus on it?
I've been looking for a car last few weeks and using it as a guide for prices. Seems that the handful of cars which reflect the redbook price guide sell in the blink of an eye, and the rest seem grossly overpriced.

Is it too conservative of a price guide? Its based on a national average of sale prices, are cars generally more expensive in Victoria?

it seems that redbook bases their prices on cars that have done about 20,000km a yr or more. their prices usually seem to be lower than what you would expect i think.

Depending what you want go through the caryards, you can get a rough price and go from there.

What kind of car are you after?

Was looking at private sales. Don't trust car salesmen.

I want something with a relatively small engine, in the $12,000-$17,500 range, with less than 100,000km on the clock. Something that's good to commute to work in.
Saw a few Mazda 3's & Focus's in that price range that looked the goods.

Initially I was going to buy something cheap like a barina or excel, but they're way overpriced for what they are. Could get a 6yr old commodore or falcon for the same price as an Excel.

I'm in the same boat.

Had a look at a 2001 Impreza on Saturday.

redbook says $10-11,700 for a private sale, dealer wanted $20,000.

Given that it's a 7 year old car which cost $26,000 new, I'd say optimistic is being kind to the dealer's expectations.

According to Glass's guide, small cars have an average resale of approximately 50% after 4 years. A 2004 Focus (SR, 1.8L, 5spd hatch) with around 60-80,000 clicks should be around $10,000 according to them.

A quick look on carsales.com.au and there's a the very same car with 74,000 km on the clock, going for $12,500 at a dealership. The very same car with 68,000 on the clock going for $12,000 privately.
