To paraphrase I think Dave Allen, there's two things I can't stand, religious intolerance and those bloody Jedis.

Drunken Darth Vader 'attacked Star Wars fans'

A drunken man wearing a black garbage bag yelled "Darth Vader" while jumping over a garden wall before allegedly attacking the two founders of the first Jedi Church in the UK with a metal crutch.

Arwel Wynne Jones is accused of assaulting Barney and Michael Jones while they were being interviewed for a TV documentary about their love of the Star Wars films.

The cousins were being filmed in their backyard when Hughes, 27, who was dressed in a black bin liner and shiny black helmet after drinking several litres of wine, allegedly leapt over the garden fence in Holyhead, Wales, wielding a metal crutch in place of a light saber.

Hughes allegedly hit Barney Jones in the head, laughed, and then hit Michael Jones in the thigh. Police identified Hughes after viewing footage of the incident from a Channel 4 cameraman.

Quoted in the North Wales Chronicle, Barney Jones said: "Myself and my cousin were doing some filming for a documentary on the Jedi Church, when we were attacked.

Someone jumped over our front garden wall wearing a black bin bag cape and said he was Darth Vader, before hitting us with a crutch."

Barney Jones, a hairdresser, recently set up the first Jedi Church in the UK in an old convent in Holyhead and claims to have at least 30 local members. Known as Master Jonba Hehol, Barney Jones' order now heads up the UK Church of Jedi Knights and several orders overseas.

Hughes, who admits to having a drinking problem, say he cannot remember the attack and first heard about it when he read the local paper. He nearly missed his court appointment on April 22, prompting district judge Andrew Shaw to quip, "I hope the force will soon be with him".

The case has been adjourned until May 13, when pre-sentence reports are due in. Hughes already has several previous convictions and may serve a jail sentence for the assault.

I wonder if Jedi will actually take off as a real religion. Stranger things have happened. Some nutcase may appear who will claim that the Star Wars movies were the work of divine inspiration and designed to guide man towards a realisation of the eternal Jedi truths.

Rastafarianism is based on worship of the former emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie (original name Ras Tafari).

Something similar happened about 2000 years ago in the middle east.

i'm not intolerant of religion but i am intolerant of religious people pushing their religion on to people.

FWIW I'd be quite happy to follow the Jedi religion as long as the church was a Millenium Falcon and the minister was Chewbacca

There is a very good chance that Jedi will become an accepted religion in the not to distant future.

The Church of Scientology is effectively based on a sci-fi novel so why not a religion based on a series of hit sci-fi movies.

How many generations will it be before the Celestial Teapot is undeniable fact?
