Usually require references from previous landlords, not sure if anything else, as I have been in this place for nearly six years. I will be interested to hear any updates, as in April when I go to melbourne, going to try & put the wheels in motion to moving back there. I am amazed how cheap the rents for houses are now, you can get them for around $180 average & considering the salaries are higher there as well, shouldn't be a problem if I can line up a job. :thumbsu:

They will ask you for plenty of documents like your drivers licence and something that has your name on it. Remember the 100 points of ID.

Also look at something that it is within your budget you don't want to be paying for something that takes all of your money so that you have got nothing left even if it suits you.

I am surprised to hear the salaries are higher. For high end jobs , yes I would expect it, but a receptionist is a receptionist is a receptionist. $480 in Perth is $480 in Melbourne.

I know a few posters on here will be at the G.E Highway with tears in their eyes as the U-Haul truck leaves Midland:D

I don't live in Midland. I'm also not a receptionist, I'm an office administrator & all the jobs I have been looking at are paying between $35,000 & $40,000, considering I am on just under $30,000 I can afford to pay an extra $40 a week rent.

Edit: WTF, how come it's saying there are 3 replies, when there are only two? Seems BF is like a lot of posters, think 1 + 1 = 3
I think It was me. I stuffed up because of my slow pc.

Why the change of tune Mantis? Just a couple of weeks ago you were shooting me down for expressing this opinion (although I don't think you'll get much for $180). Yet now you agree with me :D.

Has your dog had puppies or something? :p

Anyway, good luck with the move.

I wouldn't think a receptionist in Melbourne is $480. My younger sister has had a few reception jobs over the years. About 5 years ago it was like $26K a year (entry level) now its at least $35K.

You'd get $35k-$40k easily here. An office administrator would probably get anything up to 50k here. (Well thats from the people I know who are doing that kind of work)

In the company I work you can come in with no office experience and the base salary is around $41K, and these are like 20 years olds that know nothing.

OK, help me out with my rent question and I promise I'll start a thread asking what Mantis can do for a living and how much she can expect to earn

Is this karma?

Sorry Binxy, I will ring an estate agent tomorrow & find out the answer to your question, or maybe you could even do it. :D

You need to collect a Tenancy Application from any real estate agent. The application will ask for information about your current employment, accommodation history and references. If you have not rented for a while a friend can act as a reference for how you keep the house. However, if you have can photographs of the garden at your present address, or have a sales rep appraise your home so that they can act as a reference this would be preferable.

You require proof of identification. If not a resident of Australia, your passport and documentation confirming you are legally allowed to reside in Australia.

You will need to provide emergency or alternative contacts such as family members or a friend (usually four different contacts are required).

That should do it.

Most real estate agents want at least 2 previous rental property references and even proof of income. You will also have to provide proof of id and some personal references incase you do a runner.

$180 a week will get either get you a nice flat/unit/apartment whatever in an average suburb, or a ********hole in a nice suburb. Always go the nice joint IMO. Always go north west on that budget. Always.

I have only rented once (living back at home, waiting for settlement for my first place. Kill me. Kill me now) but they only required standard ID stuff.

Someone is sleeping on the couch if they have rented and all of a sudden are renting again! ;)

We just leased a flat back in December and we needed very little ID and documentation, whereas my sister went through another agent and needed pretty much every document she possesses and then some, so I think it really depends on the agent. Best to have as much as possible ready just in case, forms of ID and references etc.

Mantis....$180 for a house?! We could barely find a flat for under $200 a week!! I guess it depends what area you want to live in I suppose, and each suburb has its bargain properties that aren't ****holes!! :thumbsu:

Renting is really easy. Don't be scared of renting. Try and get something that is close to public transport and shopping centres so that you have a place that you don't have to go too far away from your parents place.

Even if you have a car it is best for you to go where the public transport is and the shopping centres. It all helps. Trust me. Where I live I am only 5 minutes walk away from Wendouree villiage.

It all depends upon where in Melbourne you want to live. It is always expensive when you have to rent in Melbourne.
If you can't afford it put your name down for a commission house. They are good because they don't pay a lot of rent.
