Last week Richmond were 20 points up against Geelong late in the 2nd qtr. The Cats did their regular thing and switched into an extra gear and piled on some quick goals to lead by 2 at half time. Cotchin was hobbling and Maric did his ankle, but we were trading blows early in the 3rd qtr when Dusty marked in the goal square and the umpires penalised Newman for retaliating to a Selwood attack off the ball. 50 metres and a 12 point turn around was followed by Vickery being knocked out in the centre bounce. Unsurprisingly they won that bounce and goaled. Another bounce, with no Richmond ruck on the field and another goal to Geelong.
The game was lost and our team has since been lambasted by the media. We are whingers apparently, Dimma and the boys are soft and should start claiming the responsibility for their defeats rather than looking for excuses.
I disagree.
Yes, there is a problem with a culture that blames umpires, fate or whatever for defeat. The team needs to collectively examine each loss and the focus of that examination has to be the things that we can change, which are our own actions. But it's also important to understand where we are in our development, to not lower our heads, to have some confidence in our abilities.
Tonight Geelong played Essendon and it was a very revealing game. It shadowed in an uncanny way our match against the Cats. The undefeated Bombers were 21 points up against Geelong late in the 2nd qtr just as we had been 20 pts up. The Cats then layed on a late qtr clinic to grab a lead at half time.
What was different after that? Well the only key player to be injured was Taylor Hunt earlier in the game. The Bombers wern't deprived of their entire ruck division within a few minutes of having a 12 point turn around delivered by the umpires. Yet they still managed to lose by a comparable margin.
What does this mean?
It means that we haven't been playing as badly as most people think. We all need to take a chill pill. If Port Adelaide beat us they will have to play exceptionally well. And Mark MacClure is a flog.
The latter conclusion has always been correct, of course, but its correctness has been reinforced by his recent impersonation of a demented blue walrus,

This post is too logical. We have lost 3 games in a row so Dimma needs to be sacked and Trent Cotchin (who is 100% fit) is worse than Jack Watts.
That may be so, but Im rather proud of the image of MaçClure as a demented blue walrus. I can see him on a remote northern beach, pulling his bloated body along the strand while complaining in an inarticulate bellow about the Tigers being overrated.

You also forgot the whole no free kicks in the 2nd quarter and 4-14 frees at one point in the 3rd.

Could see him fighting against Robbo for a mate

Sorry but I can't agree and I don't feel optimistic anymore.

Yeah we haven't been playing 'badly', but the fact is that we are not good enough.

Personally I think the Collingwood game was the big disappointment and that's when it dawned on me that this side is not good enough and when I look at our list now I really think there is a lot that needs to change in the next 3-4 years for us to have a chance. We're still very much in development. I disagree with the 'you have to earn every game' notion because there are a lot of players there who are going ok enough not to get dropped but are still not good enough for us to go to the next level. We only have about 8-9 players that fit into the quality of the top 4, we have such a long way to go. I wouldn't mind a mini list cleanout at the end of the year, with some 'bold delistings'.

The defence is still a huge problem. If you want to talk about 'reality' have a look at the top sides defence:

Lake, Gibson, Hodge, Birchall, Guerra, Stratton
Taylor, Lonergan, Hunt, Mackie, Enright, Smedts
Brown, Reid, Shaw, O'Brien, Maxwell, Clarke

We are so far off that quality it's not funny.

Apart from the Geelong backline and Stratton for Hawthorn the rest of the players you mentioned are all veterans, we have Grimes who's played a handful of games, Morris who's played 20 odd games, Rance who's still a pup, the only experienced vet we have is Chaplin and Newman(not so much anymore).

Brown, Clarke and Reid are not veterans, and Rance is not a pup.

Having said that, a lot of people compare player for player and say we aren't good enough. Of course when we're losing our players will look worse than the oppositions and vice versa. The key thing is improvement. As another posted pointed out earlier this week, in 2006 everyone was bagging Geelong for their attitude, skills and coaching. Kelly and Steve J were called to be delisted as limited players who wouldn't play in a flag. Once you start winning everyone's flaws are covered up and each player looks a lot better.

I'd imagine that Reid in our backline wouldn't do much better than Rance, and Rance would be very good for Collingwood. They are very similar players with the main difference being the team they play in. But a lot of us bag Rance and lose our patience with him, while Reid is acknowledged as a great defender.

It's a bit like what came first, the chicken or the egg. Are our players not good enough at all, or are they not good enough yet? Last year we definitely weren't far off being a top 4 team if we could play a better last 10 minutes of games, and many neutral officials and media personalities stated that in most key statistical categories we were in the top 4. So really, with our current list we are not as far off as a lot of people think. I think we need to tinker with the gameplan a bit and drill defence into our players' heads more especially after a turnover, but I don't think our individual players are a significant problem.

This is interesting to compare, but the way good sides play today, if you turn the ball over, anywhere on the ground, then its coming down to your back line quicker than you can say 'jack robinson'.

Looking at Geelong - its full field offence requiring exquisite skills, and full field defence when the opposition have it

After playing Geelong we see how far off we are in terms of playing personnel.

And there is no simple answer to how to improve the team, if we can finish 8th everybody will stoked.
But, there is a lot of improvement required and I think there still needs to be significant list changes.
