I've long believed that a key to any team or any sports off field success is plentiful free to air coverage. I still remember the day NBL announced it was pulling the pitiful remainder of its free to air and i predicted it would die in the arse as a result ... and it has.

With this is mind, wtf gives with Richmonds free to air coverage lately. I make it 6 weeks without a single free to air game. For members like many of us (i never quite could cancel it even after the Collingwood game!) it doesnt make too much of a difference. Although being able to watch the interstate games would be nice.

But i truly believe that in order for the club to have continued off field success, which is a key to on field success, we need as much free to air coverage as we can get. This is great for promotion and a stimulus for memberships, in turn sponsorships etc etc.

The board or whoever is in charge of this at RFC need to get off their collective arses and start to push the AFL to ensure more of our games are televised FTA. 6+ weeks is ridiculous. Would never ever happen to a professionally run club like the Scum or Carltank.

I don't think any of our interstate games are on FTA this season, which is just a joke. Every interstate game for every team should be on FTA. Games in Melbourne, we can always just go to watch it but we shouldn't be forced to get pay TV or go to a pub to see our team play.

This has been a major bitch for me for ages now.
Not being in Melbourne & with a young family, it means travelling interstate for games is pretty much not an option.
I have also resisted the Fox carrot up until now because I really have very little time to watch TV anyway.
All I want is my 3 hours a week of AFL (Richmond) and with perhaps half (hopefully) games on FTA during the year, I would be forking out around $76.00 a game to Murdoch for the others!

But thats just my personal selfish position.

Your general points about off-field success are very valid IMO.

Non-Tigers, perhaps non-AFL nuts but people who have a general interest in sports will not seek out games of AFL on Pay TV but will occasionally tune in to whichever game is on free-to-air.
With The Tigers getting choked out of this market and even when shown, it is often at friggin 2.00am in the morning here in Sydney, we get ZERO marketing benefit and "brand exposure" just to use the wanky term.

Collingwood (as usual), Essendon and the others just keep soaking this up.

One day I might troll back through the TV schedules this year so far and plot out the number of games on free-to-air for each team.

I would be astounded if Richmond were not stone motherless...

How many games have we had free to air this season? I was surprised the carlton game didn't air. Let me make a count. The St Kilda game, the Bulldogs game, the Carlton game, the Collingwood game, the Geelong game and the Essendon game.

I think most of the people concerned about this problem have young kids they dont really want to take to the local pub.

It doesnt suit everyone.

Bingo. When we play in Melbourne, if I can't get someone to watch them, i just take them with me. They are too young to really appreciate the game, but enjoy the experience if it's once a month. If we're playing interstate and I can't get a babysitter, I'm screwed.

Plus... no guarantees the pubs up here will have it on anyway.
The Dapto dogs are always popular to the toothless mug punters around here...

The main point of the OP was the potential loss in overall exposure though which I think is valid.

True. The pub i was at a few weeks ago changed the Richmond vs Port game to rugby with 2 minutes to go.
I had to call a mate to hear the last minute of the game. I was fuming!!

last year and in previous seasons ive watched richmonds interstate foxtel matches at the royal oak bridge road richmond and its the next best thing to being at the game because alot of tiger fans get there im wondering if they are still televising the games this year.

the game is on at the royal oak bridge road richmond if anyone wants to see it its a good atmosphere there.:)

Richmond absolutely screwed over again this coming week with the WB v Geel game shown live on FTA.

We must, must, as a club have good free to air coverage for off field success and this season the AFL have bent us over and right royally fv.cked us ..... and what worse is our board/management appear to be letting it happen .... again, this would never ever in a million years happen to a collingwood or carlton.

7 weeks and countin no FTA coverage into Melbourne ....

They know how to make a buck dude...thats why we are front and center with Foxtel. ;)

To get more FTA, we need one or both of 2 things.

1) Win more games. ( ie, 'attractive' football ).
2) Lot's of supporters ( ie, ratings ).

That'll get us things like Fri/Sat night matches from the AFL & the FTA that goes with them.
