After the success of the Richmonds activity in the upcomming 'Super-draft' thread; and Richmonds 0-3 start to the season which has seen us draw level with North as spoon favorites, I felt it about the right time to start looking at the next draft.

The purpose of the last thread was look at the prospects in some details months out from the actully draft, consiter what the club most needs and then rate our performaces post-draft.

The orical Weaver himself has already talked up Matt Kruezer as a potential no.1 draft pick and quite likly to be at Richmond last season. However - ruckman are not always good top 10 picks/first round, let alone #1, with later pick ups/rookies turning out just as good if not better. Would we want to overlook the best midfeild or KPP for a ruckman?

We picked up some solid prospects the last 3 drafts. We require at least one more decent influx of kids and another cull.

I think we are going to draft Harrison Lee (196cm, 95kg) under the father/son rule.

Miller and TW should just get the best available. Perfer a good strong midfielder and no more of these light flankers (JON, Tambling, Meyer). As you said we should get key-position players later in the draft and rookie draft.

Harrison Lee is the NSW scholarship player we already have.

I think you're thinking of Jon Lee who is the General's son.

Thanks, thats who I was thinking about. Any chance of him coming over next year?

nah he's already been down at the club and hasnt shown much

the cull will be more important than the draft imo

we were always going to go backwards this year but if we can use that to good effect then it will mean massive improvement next year

The way our ruck stocks are I'd take Kruizer at the first oportunity. We cant take a chance with a later pick for a ruckman. We need one that is showing it all now. It'd be rocky but more sure than using a 2nd or 3rd pick on a ruckman when the elite are already gone. . .

unless we trade for a proven ruckman.

I doubt the club is going to go after a strong bodied midfeilder with an early pick based on the clubs history; over looking the like of Hurn, Jones, Armitage.

High picks on ruckman are abit dodgy, the like of Fraser, Messen, Pattison have shown. If we are going to use a very high pick on a ruckman you'd wanna hope the player is top shelf.

Another Trent Knobel? No thanks.

Unless we can get a class young ruckman such as Minson, which we won't - then I'd prefer to draft our own ruckman instead of getting a 3rd rate 25 year old.

you always overpay for ruckman so its not worth it

Simmonds cost us Fiora!

It's always a greater risk taking a ruckman early than taking a midfielder or KPP.

I'd like to see us grab another elite midfielder, so far we've taken Lids, Bling, JON (chb/flank/winger) and Riewoldt (KPP) so I'd like to see us grab a quality midfielder early and since there are plenty of ruckmen just grab any of them with our second pick.

I doubt 8 clubs will pick ruckmen with their first picks, that'll leave us a highly talented tall at 20-something who 'best available' wise could be top 12 quality.

Agree that it has been the trend to overlook the strong-bodied mids, but i reckon that as we get closer to our 'window of opportunity', we may take this type because they usually are AFL-ready in their second or even first year, as opposed to the skinnys we have pick to this date. Following this strategy, you will have a good group of mids coming good at about the same time due to the different rates of development. So don't be surprised if we go with a more robust type this draft, provided he has pace.

Nothing wrong with picking rucks early in the draft as long as they are outstanding with still plenty of upside, and are genuine rucks rather than the utilities like Pattison, who can get caught inbetween ruck and KP.

Also agree that we should avoid drafting a second-rate ruck and develop our own.

I've been waiting for bentleigh to start this thread since last friday. :D

There are massive raps on Kruezer so i would not be at all disappointed if we nab him at 1 or 2. But i would like us to take Cotchin at our first pick and hope one of the other quality ruckmen fall to our priority pick before grabing another mid with our first pick of rd 2.

The word is there is a gun forward in the 2007 Falcons who is looking the goods. Pity Geelong will snare him under the father - son rule...again

Question for Weaver:

Who would be in the top 5 for inside mids at this early stage of 07? Seems to be another area we need help in as although Cogs can come back next year odds are he will not be as good as he was.

if you havent got a top 5 draft pick, then if you dont look at SA or WA for your recruits then you have NFI. Their second and third tier comps are light years ahead of ours in quailty. Me thinks the vic clubs need to wake up a little. SA and WA are the breeding ground for footballers, hasnt changed much over a long time. FOrget about rebels, cannons etc when you are in the teens in drafting. You look at the WAFL and SANFL. They are respectively the 2nd and 3rd stronges comps in the country and have a plethora of young kids playing. ;)

Bring em on. Dont really care if we get blasted out of the water. Just give us something new TW. Those who you have entrusted with bringing the new game plan to the fore, cant cut it bro. If you havent got with the page yet, then its a real concern that we have put our faith in your knowledge.
Its the same old same old. We go to water and its the same symptoms. Cant kick it out from FB without "schooboy" errors, that sap the life out of our confidence, or ridiculous turnovers at the worst moment, from the usual suspects that snuff out a chance to stem the tide or regain the ascendency, that have us and have had us holding our heads in our hands screaming, NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
What we were doing before you, is still happening!!!.

WHat is a real concern is that one of the prime suspects has been dishing up the same shit year in year out. \He has forged a reputation that has supporters singing his praises as an exeprienced head in our team. Seen his whole career unfold in front of me and ever since he was put into defnce he has rewirriten the book of **** ups. Do you know who that is? he hit the scene as a sneaky, goal sneak, that caused head aches for the opposition match ups at HF, because of his marking ability and long left foot kicking.

Yeah he plays a blinder here and there, and all is forgotten, by the live for the moment supporters, but those that know, dont forget the **** ups, because they keep on being revived.
Now close the book on this Spud inspired exeperiment gone wrong and put him where he will do max damage on the scoreboard, or at least, not damage us to the max from the kick outs on the scorebaord, in another tiger meltdown.
Now why do you think thats the case? Lets see, maybe just maybe, the players that have been there, done that are still there and still doing that, are in the same place where they have been doing that? naaa, no way, thats ridiculous. It must be that it is the players that are not there and havent been there, that are still doing that? but that is ridiculous isnt it?
Dont know what you see bro, but if you havent stamped a few files yet, then you are pulling everyone's pud, by winning just enough., so there are more "positive thinkers" that are that because they like to sing the song every so often. ;)

While wondering who Trent Cotchin is, i found this report on him (not sure if others are aware).

He sounds very impressive:

earth to imabeliever, they all "sound" impressive dude. Lets just say the Flounder sounded impressive too. If he didn then we wouldnt have swooped to ""snare" him at Numero Uno back then. Not to mention the other sound impressisionist, Fiora who had us falling over ourselves to "snare" him at 4. ;)
