Having put up with some dubious "ruckmen" in recent years in Greg Stafford, Simon Feast, Stefan Carey and Brent Green, Mottster is a breath of fresh air. Big and strong, he is a good solid ruckman who gives us a genuine contest at each rucking situation. I will admit he surprised me with his intelligent play, especially in his first year of AFL footy. Rodney Eade says that he is a very "coachable" player, and it shows - learns very quickly.

Did VERY well against Allan yesterday. Once Ball comes back, him and Goodes will take the contest around the ground, with Mott handling center square bounces.

He is in my fantasy footy side. Took a bit of a gamble with him. He might get a start when he starts stringing a few good games in a row!

I saw him play WAFL with South Fremantle last year - unfortunately he was injured and couldn't play in the Grand Final, which South were duly thrashed in.

Good player, I thought, has the size, the shape and the mobility to make it as a ruckman.

I did see him occasionally do really stupid things, usually when he lost his temper about something. I remember a game against West Perth at Joondalup when I turned to my mate and said, "watch the big bloke, he'll hit someone in a minute and give away a free" - sure enough, it happened and turned the game in our favour.

He'll need to do something about that quickly as you can't afford to be indisciplined at the highest level.
