Died today of a heart attack at the age of 59.

A lot of us here, I reckon, would have to rate this blokes cinematic output in the 80's- Ferris Bueller, Pretty In Pink, The Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Weird Science, National Lampoon's Vacation, Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors and my personal favourite (easily top five as far as comedies go) Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

His career once the 90's rolled around seemed to stagnate (take his written/production efforts on Home Alone and maybe Beethoven out of that category) which is massively mind boggling. However, name one teen comedy of the last few years, such as Superbad or Juno, that would have existed had this man not.

And, if there was no John Hughes, Jay and Silent Bob wouldn't have prevented Armageddon.

Kudos sir. Rest peacingly.

Certainly one of the most influencial people on my generation, without a doubt. Every one of his movies is somewhere in the collection of old VHS tapes or remastered copies made on DVD at home. It's indeed a very sad day Filth!

He also wrote "Home Alone" of course, which launched Macauley Culkin's career. (EDIT: just noticed your mention of Home Alone mate!)

I'm gonna wear a head band for the rest of today with my suit jacket sleeves pulled up to the elbows and my shirt collar turned up, all in his honour!

The thing with his movies was that they were ones you'd memorise the lines from, and copy the clothes and mannerisms of their stars as well.

"Buck Melanoma......Moley Russell's wart" lol

"They're not pillows!"

"Pucker up buttercup"

"It's alive!"

Too many to mention! Legend!
