Given that the saints were in total control for most of the match, I thought instead of moving Rix forward he should of stayed on the ball as long as possible. Ackland is not going to get any better, but Rix may. So when the game was won why not give him as much opportunity as possible?

It has been an impressive start for Rix. He has slotted into AFL footy very easily and his three games so far have been very solid for a debutant. He also has some aggression as shown by his sheperd which he followed up with something for the Hawthorn player.

Why wont Ackland improve?

Geez, the guy is a year YOUNGER than Rix and has only played 45 matches in his entire career:

Code:
  Blake, Jason 74 25 15 Mar 1981 189cm 87kg Beaumaris Ruck Utility
  Michael Rix 3 25 12 Apr 1981 200cm 100kg Coburg Ruck
  Fiora, Aaron 101 25 19 Apr 1981 186cm 80kg Port Adelaide Winger/Flanker
  Schwarze, Troy 71 24 23 Dec 1981 190cm 89kg Dingley Defender
  Ackland, Cain 45 24 16 Mar 1982 196cm 96kg Port Adelaide Ruck

Good point StKildonan. Theres no reason that he couldn't develop into a top quality. Some people say that he is too small because he cant crash and bash into other ruckmen. But he is the same size as Jeff White and Jeff White is not said to be too small as a ruckmen.

It is going to be a good battle between him and Rix for the number 1 ruck spot as there isn't room for both of them with both Blake and Koschitzke bak in the team. While some people might think that Kosi should be the number 1 ruck, i dont. He is far too damaging when played at CHF as demonstrated last year while rucking a bit at times. This leaves Riewodlt to play as a leading half-forward who can lead up the wings and then push back deep at times.

I think it just comes down to the fact some people have it and some people dont... physical ability or football smarts probably arent up there.

Rix is probably in the same boat but he has a big body and looks to have a stronger will to impose himself...

I have been impressed with Rix.
His ruckwork is sound. I loved his great shepherd on Lance Franklin (protecting Max Hudghton I think) then he gave Lance a spray while he was down. :thumbsu:

He hasn't really done much with the ball yet (after his first kick goal). He seems to hurry his disposals (almost exclusively handballs) and has so far made way too many clangers. I'm sure he will improve though. He is trying too hard and attempting to be too quick. He will benefit from getting the ball in space and taking his time to pinpoint a pass or two and hitting a few handpasses to the receiver's chest.

Confidence and experience will help.
AFL is a whole lot faster and seriously more pressure than VFL and I believe he will acclimatise.

I'm not sure that he will hold his spot when Blake returns, so he has to make the most of this opportunity now.
If he can play well in the ruck against Collingwood, this will make his case for retention so much stronger.

I also thought that shepperding was awesome. I actually had to stop the video, rewind and watch again as I didn't really believe it was Rix.

That play and his goal (the first of the game) against the Swans in a 45 degree angle are my Rix's highlights so far.

Football journeyman finds right place
13 July 2006
Luca Giacobello

There are some who would not have blamed Michael Rix for giving the game away. Turning 25 earlier this year, Michael had endured setback after setback in pursuit of achieving his dream of playing senior AFL football.

Therefore it’s a testament to him that he has persisted for so long in waiting to get his chance, “It’s certainly different at this level. I played with Port (Melbourne), Box Hill and I thought I’d have a chance with Hawthorn on the rookie list but they didn’t want me.

It was hard to go back to Coburg at first but I just kept my head down and played good footy. I drew strength from certain individuals at each club but the thing that kept me motivated was the knock-backs each time. When I was drafted at end of last year, I was grateful for the chance.”

The recruiting staff at Moorabbin saw something in the 200cm gentle giant by selecting him with the 49th pick overall in the NAB AFL Draft to help bolster their big man department.

The whispers coming from the VFL early this season is that St Kilda were poised to play this journeyman at any time.

St Kilda has been hit by a freight train when it comes to injuries this year with losses in their height and strength department hurting the club.

Rix, nicknamed the ‘Templar” for his size, strength and looks, was primed to take on the role of lead ruckman with Cain Ackland and Jason Blake out, “I got my chance against Sydney and kicked a goal in my first game which was great. I felt I did well enough to show I belonged in the side and though I can learn more, feel great to get some games under my belt.”

Averaging over 18 hit outs, Rix has shown he can handle his own in his four senior games and his best so far came last Sunday against Collingwood, “I thought I started off well. I got a lot of early ball and covered ground well.”

Playing on Josh Fraser, the Magpie had a good game but the rookie did well against an important player for Collingwood, hardly letting the big man out of his sight, “I thought I matched up really well against Josh. I was physically stronger and maybe a bit quicker but he is still very clever and a tough match up for anyone.”

The Saints played some fantastic football and showed encouraging signs that they are returning to some fine form in the right time of year, “Our trip to Bonnie Doon really helped us to reassess our goals and realise what we want from this season and how important it was for us to come back refreshed and win games.”

The Saints cruised to an easy 59 point win after a shaky start, handing Collingwood its most embarrassing loss this season and keeping their Top Four chances alive.

Michael Rix is an example of why persistence pays off. This humble gentleman that possesses so much raw talent can become one of the vital cogs required to carry the Saints this season and with the injury list growing, its essential men of Rix’s character are on the field to steer the ship in the right direction.

I've just rewatched the game again and I remember seeing Rix's at the circle the players make to sing our song when we win a game. His smile was the best of the paco of players celebrating. It was that kind of smile that tells things. I thought he was saying something like: "Oh yeah, I'm so happy to be able to live this, and be sure I will work hard every moment so this I don't wake up of this dream".

Ok, maybe I am exagearting, but I assure you his smile was the best on that moment.

And speaking about smiles, did you like Maguire's after his goal near the end of the game? OMG, that I call perfect teeth, hahaha. Keep up the good work Goose!! :thumbsu:

Great to see Rixy doing well at AFL level. Dominated in the VFL, and deserved every chance to make it again as an AFL player.

I agree.

I have been talking him up ever since the Saints picked him up later in last year's draft.

Rix was very highly thought of at Richmond to the point where Wallace had him training with the main group despite him being unlisted and a Coburg-only player. With us having Knobel and Simmonds and being a mature-age recruit, Richmond baulked at drafting him but I reckon every Tiger fan would be rapt at seeing him getting a game and having a go.

How good can Rix become? He is already averaging 18 hitouts a match and has a physical presence. Does anyone have any stats on his hitout to advantage percentage. In my opinion, he looks very similar to Ben Hudson who has become a very good ruckmen.

It was a masterful coaching move and says bundles about Rix's credibility as a player when he is brought into the team to perform a specific task.
He blanketed Mooney and negated his effect on the match. A team man who sacrificed his own game for the Saints. His effort will not go unnoticed.
