No tag, new body, same gig
28 January 2003 Herald Sun
By REBECCA WILLIAMS
ROBERT Harvey says relinquishing the St Kilda captaincy will allow him to focus on getting his body right for footy this year.
The dual Brownlow medallist ended his tenure as skipper last season under coach Grant Thomas's plan to rotate the captaincy.
Harvey said he was not disappointed to lose the job because his role with the Saints would not change.
"As an older player around the club, my role doesn't change whether I'm captain or not," Harvey said yesterday. "I don't really need the tag of captain to be a leader.
"I've probably got more pressing issues for myself anyway and that's getting my body right and getting back out on the field."
The Saints are expected to name their captain after a seven-day community training camp, starting on Thursday.
Harvey said he didn't envy the task Thomas had in making the decision. "It'll probably be down to Andrew Thompson, Aaron Hamill or Lenny Hayes," Harvey said.
"They've all got different qualities that would make them great captains, so it's going to be a pretty hard decision for Grant and the guys.
"It's an even battle and a good position the club's in because there's probably five or six guys that could take it over.
"But these three are probably standing out a bit above the rest. I really couldn't split them."
Harvey, who has a year remaining on his contract, has missed more than 30 games in the past three seasons.
Injury has again interrupted his pre-season, with the 31-year-old nursing a sore achilles since Christmas.
He was restricted to sprinting, jogging laps and light skills work at Moorabbin yesterday. But he expects to be back in full training next week.
"We go to Tassie on Thursday and start playing some games down there next week, but whether I play any, I'm not sure," he said.
"But I'll be in full training by next week and looking to get into a practice game the weekend after."
Harvey said he had been working closely with club staff in a bid to manage his training program better to prevent further injuries.
"It's just going to be a management thing," he said. "The most positive thing I can do is make sure I get the body to a stage where I can control the injuries that I can control."
Brett Voss and Justin Peckett, who have both had osteitis pubis, joined full training yesterday.
Trent Knobel (patella tendinitis) remains an unlikely Wizard Cup starter, while Craig Callaghan (knee) is on target for a mid-season return.
