The Nuggets might be trying to catch "The Worm."
General manager Kiki Vandeweghe said he is considering offering former NBA rebounding champion and renowned wild man Dennis Rodman a tryout this week.
Rodman, who ranks 18th all time in rebounds with 11,954, has played for five championship teams. But he's 42 and hasn't played in the NBA since the 1999-2000 season with the Dallas Mavericks. Vandeweghe has been looking for another veteran big man.
"We might bring him in for a day for a tryout," Vandeweghe said. "We're just looking around. We've kind of kicked the idea around a little bit."
The 6-foot-8 Rodman is a two-time NBA defensive player of the year who led the league in rebounding seven consecutive seasons, ending in 1998. Only NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain (11) has won more NBA rebounding titles. Vandeweghe also has been told Rodman is in "great shape."
Vandeweghe worked for the Mavericks as an assistant and director of player development when Rodman played for Dallas.
Rodman has caught the public's eye with his ever-changing hair color, tattoos, body piercings, cross-dressing and partying lifestyle. His off-court antics could be a distraction. They led to his dismissal in stops with Dallas and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Vandeweghe said the knocks on Rodman are "definitely a concern," but he also has known him for a long time and respects him.
"If he comes in and plays like everyone knows he can play and he's in great shape, it can be a great thing," Nuggets forward Ryan Bowen said. "What we don't need is if he comes in and brings the other stuff with him. Some of it may be good, because our team is changing with the (NBA TV) crew and trying to get more publicity. If it comes to the point where a guy, not necessarily Rodman, comes in and disrupts what we're trying to do, then I don't know if it would be a good thing."
Nuggets assistant Adrian Dantley played with Rodman in Detroit from 1986-89. Dantley said Rodman can help the Nuggets if he can live up to his past reputation of being in great shape.
"If he came in, he wouldn't be the star of the minutes," Dantley said. "You need that veteran guy. He's aging, but knowing Dennis, he's in shape - and he's a smart player."
Probably just a publicity stunt, but it would be special should it actually happen.

I like it!
