lets just clear a few things up.I am not critisising hawthorn for rushing 11 behinds on GF day , it was a tactic that helped them win a premiership so good on them .All I am saying is that a change to the rush behind rule will most affect hawthorn due to the fact that their defence lacks the ability to quickly clear the ball out of their defence when palced under pressure.

dont forget in the GF geelong had chapman and stokes both standing on 1 leg, than you have varcoe and lonegran who are not up to it.All the hawks defence had to deal with was mooney and johnson.Compare that to geelongs defence who had franklin,roughead,williams,stokes and dew to deal with and you will see that geelong defence had by far the tougher task.

look at it this way Geelongs game plan is based around moving the ball quickly so they can make life easy for their forward line.It is no secret that to beat geelong you pressure the ball carrier to reduce the quality and the speed at which the ball is deliverd to the forwards.

Hawthorns game plan revolves around slowing the opposition down so they can make life easier for their defence.Sides will soon figure out that the way to beat hawthorn is to move the ball quickly and precisly into their defence.

make no mistake hawthorns defence will cost them big time some time in the future just like geelongs forward line cost them.

That still doesn't explain the other 43 times Hawthorn had no issue with pressure rebounding the football quickly out of its back 50. Like i said that was the first time the Hawthorn players used the rush behind, it had no affect on there decision making it was just an easy way for them to reload.

All your stating is that your forward line is average, everybody knows that, its the major weakness in your side followed by your backline. Lets not also forget that our best KP defender and our link up player 'Young' who was BOG at the time were of the ground for 2 and 3 quarters repectively. It meant quite abit of reshuffling of the side, I don't know what youre trying to get at.

Thats pure stupidity........ The Hawthorn gameplan like the Geelong gameplan revolves around fast movement of the ball to give space to its KP talent. Franklin and Roughead didn't kick over 180 goals for the season with a congested forward line.

Like Geelong when the opposition have the ball, there gameplan revolves around slowing the opposition down so they can make it easier for there defence . Geelong do it using a massive forward half zone, making it hard for the opposition team to move the ball out of the backline which limits forward entries which then relieves pressure on Geelongs backline thats vulnerable on the fast break

Hawthorn also uses a zone, all be it in a different formation, it uses a pyramid cluster that guards the corridor, slows the oposition down whilst making the opposition go wide. Once you go wide, it morphs to a grid formation which chokes the opposition in the midfield.

Both game plans are designed for the same aim, One's more advanced and resulted in a premiership victory.

i voted every team, as the rule affects every team

in terms of scoreboard, i don't think it'll affect the poorer teams so much, because they're gonna get beaten anyway. it would probably have a greater affect on the better teams who have relatively weaker defenders.

Lance Franklin has never posed as a problem to Geelong, the last 3 times Scarlett and Franklin went head to head, Franklin has kicked a total of 7 goals on him, just averaging more then 2 goals per game, Scarlett has the wood over Franklin so it was not a matter of Franklin firing or not, it was just a matter of whether Scarlett was on tune.

The Hawthorn Defense had it very easy on the day to generate run out of defensive 50 due to the fact that our quick smaller forwards who apply pressure the most were injured in chapman and stokes, that would be the equivelent of Hawthorn Having Rioli and Williams injured and slowed down.

Also the use of the Cluster is implemented for that very reason, because the coach has no faith in your defence to stand up on its own two feet, so he creates a barrier, slowing down teams and making it very tough to move the ball in.

Because Both god and Clarkson figured a long time ago that if teams had a clean pathway of delivery into the Hawthorn 50, that the results would be a catostrophic barrage of goals against the great Gilham and the Ex Fremantle delisted CHB in Croad.

what a reliable source. next time back up your argument with either facts, reasoning, or opinions from people who matter.

on your above point, the cluster is basically just a localised zone. but instead of zoning the whole ground, we occupy the corridor, and then shift as you try to go around it. that is basically the crux of it.
many teams employ a zone, whether their defence is A+ or not. sydney premiers team had one and their defence was ace.

clarko employed that style of zone because he knew that innovation was key to success. He also knew that being able to occupy the corridor is crucial to dictating play. It will also be key to turning the ball over further up the ground. Teams can hurt you faster and more regularly when the ball is turned over up the ground, and that would have been a major reason for his employing the cluster.

But what's more, we were using that zone in the opening rounds of 2008. This was before we were premiership contenders. He used it because he thought it would work.
