I'm really keen to see this 25yo BIG defender progress this year.
Nobody talks much about him, but he shows steady progress each year, has great spring, good judgement, and can pluck the ball quite well.
He could be plugging holes in our defence and eventually letting Harry go forward more often.
Any thoughts?

Unfortunately for him we have a very good gorilla (with one kidney) already .

He would be playing for a bottom 8 side next year.

Awareness is the only question about him at the moment for mine. Is quick for a big defender (closing speed) which is the number one attribute needed IMO.

Awareness / reading the play is second. Still some work to do, but will have ample opportunity to show he has this as he shoulders more responsibility this year in the twos.

I reckon we will see him get a chance, and personally I think he can make it.
He seems to show a lot of competitive spirit and athleticism, and decent skills too.

If he can improve his game sense, he could be a fine player.

I hope that he can make it, but not for the purpose of sending Harry up forward. Sure Harry is talented up forward, but his talents are of much better use down back considering how much talent we have up forward. Is the defence big enough to fit 3 large defenders ? I say that it depends on the type of opponent. If we play a team with a stacked forward then Bathie may have a shot, but he'll be up against it when we face teams with smaller forwards, as 3 big guys won't be justified and I just can't see him ever knocking Harry or Lonners off their perch.

Unless one of those two get injured, Bathie will probably be a depth player at best, and if Josh Walker is groomed to become a defender, Bathie can probably kiss goodbye a spot on Geelong's senior list. I wish him luck and hope he makes it, but even with steady improvement and everything else going his way, I still feel that he is up against it big time.

If it allows Harry to go forward more often......definately!!
Taylor's capable of a lazy 30 even when playing both ends
Personally I like the idea of Harry going forward for 11/2 to 2 quarters a game, when the opportunity presents.
He's got very sticky hands and his judgement is impeccable. He kicks straight to!

Will be a hell of a first month. I'd have him down for Rd.5 v Doggies.
Could be used as early as Rd.2 if he shows anything in the NAB Cup. There'll be tired bodies after the Hawks clash.

If one of Taylor, Lonergan or Rivers get injured then he is in. Much like Gillies the last 2 years. Thats the reality, he is 4th in line at the moment. But a handy 4th in line i reckon.

Maybe, maybe not; if it happens early on, they may prefer the more experienced Walker or Brown.
Depending on how long it takes him to learn to play football, one of the other two may even be preferred long-term.

Pesonally i would take Bathie over the other 2 especially Brown. I like Walker as a defender for the future though.

I think Walker may make a good defender, not sure about Brown
I've only seen Bathie in last year's finals, which is not really enough to make any considered judgement.
Hopefully he'll have time to learn in the 2nds before he's needed in the 1sts.

Bathie is the son of a bloke I know at work. Ex-basketballer but despite a limited junior AFL career is picking up the game pretty well. He's clearly a replacement lined up for Lonergan but maybe he can push into the team. It sounded like in 2012 his form tailed off a bit so hopefully it picks up again.

No way Bathie gets beaten 1 on 1 physically. He was big and looks to have gotten bigger. His drill and skills work last week was fine. Can't really comment on his reading the play but is big on second efforts and worked well in group drills.
Would need a rookie upgrade to play but I'd be all for it if needed

I was on the Harry go forward bandwagon for a few years - but after hearing a mate, who was at one of those special very expensive club in-house days where you meet the coach and they tell you some inside stuff (in this case at St. Kilda), who said that Watters made it quite clear that one key to the Geelong team was Harry taking marks or receiving the ball when we come out of defence - for him to be a link between defence and attack.

Then I watched more closely how we play re Harry when coming out of defence - and he is quite right. Harry so often is the marking option coming out of defence (like kick ins from behinds) - that putting him forward would rob us far too much down back.

Vardy and Pods will have to be the lead up CHF - Taylor needs stay down back. JUst the way it is.

Watters said the way to beat Geelong was to have a CHF that played like a CHB on Harry - to stop him getting touches coming out of the backline. That is how good he is.

I am a little concerned about Bathie making it.

When Footscore, who is optimistic about nearly everything Geelong, says he does not think Bathie will make it - surely means he is well less than 50/50 to make it.

not on this thread he hasn't, YET

Bathie looks like the proverbial brick shithouse in those Falls Creek shots - reckon we will persevere with him and see what he has got - what's his pathway forward as a B Class Rookie?

In my short time here, I have found posts by footscore to be very enjoyable, and even illuminating; but I don't think I am yet ready to accept him as a conclusive authority.:)
