Great Thread!!!
I remember the SAFA very well, very simmilar in standard and feel to todays SANFL.
Good stuff and there's a footy game at the same time :)
That's pumping the SAFA's tyres up a bit, I think, but it was a good competition.

In one of his rare league appearances for the Redlegs. I think the Bay player is a young(ish) Brian Colbey.
From left field, I reckon it's Daryl Moss. Too much hair and too thick set for Constable Colbey.

Just a little bit.......... :D

Used to be good for a bit of real biffo and older players making sure they would slow down their faster more agile opponents.

I also remember a couple of Pavlich's going missing from the Eagles pre season training one year and after a bit of convinving over the bar during summer they played for Flinders Park in the SAFA.

As a kid it was always an adventure to go to SAFA games - they were real suburban footy at its best.
Having watched a lot of SAFA as a kid and playing Amateurs once I played senior footy - in terms of rivalry I dont think the amateurs come near it.
SAFA you played the same teams year in and year out and you came across the same blokes a lot, which meant old memories lived long.

I remember a blue in the 1986 div 2 grand final between Elizabeth and Salisbury North and it was the best youll just about ever see.
Dave 'Jacko' Reeves swinging haymakers at those Hawk bastards and Danny Casey jumping in.
Wonderful stuff.
I saw a video of it several years ago and there's me running around the edge of the oval in a blue and yellow tracksuit with streamers cheering on the mighty Eagles.
Those were the days!

Marrett and Milde, the great ruck combo! Sadly Paul passed away /QUOTE]

I missed that. When?

Couple of years ago. Some sort of liver condition I think. He was overseas when he passed - possibly in SE Asia.

Pretty sure Russell mentioned it on AA at the time.

How about this one?

1986 Division 1 Grand Final, Payneham v Pooraka. Possibly the biggest Second Semi / Grand Final turn around of all time.

Pooraka smashed Payneham in the 2nd Semi by a whopping 23 goals, then 2 weeks later Payneham turned the tables to thrash Pooraka by 12 goals.

That's a 35 goal turnaround, remarkable.

SAFA- What a classic competition that was!! Recall how Gary Window used to go near the quarter time huddles with his mike switched on and would suddenly go off so no-one could hear all the expletives from the respective coaches! Coaches like Lloyd Zucker at Ferryden Park! LOL

There was some big units running ( or should I say strolling!!) around e.g. Gary " Richo " Richardson from Flinders Park and remember Graham " Tubby" Wickham, I think he played for " The Raggies", Athelstone! He was built like Humpty Dumpty, was a fast as a snail but actually had good skills when the ball came to him!! That was footy you could laugh along to!!

A lot of ex League and Reserves players ended up at SAFA clubs and still played some good footy, as well as some younger guys graduating to League Ranks from SAFA!! One I remember, was Ian Jones who after starting his career at Pooraka went on to play some good football in defence for Woodville in the '80s!! Being a Woodville devotee, another player that came to Oval Ave. in the '80s was a very useful utility player, John Martin. He had come to The Warriors from Edwardstown !! The list goes on.....

The aforementioned " Tubby" Wickham is now an Assistant Coach at North Adelaide !! " Jars" obviously holds the man in high regard!!

I remember guys like "Saucy" Holbrooks and "Bomber" Lancaster runing around. Lewi Caillotto (spelling?) was another of the 'fatty' favourites. Big fat slow bastards with great skills who could throw a haymaker when needed.

I am going to make myself look silly but I recall Ferryden Pk going through undefeated and beating Edwardstown Baptist???? in a second semi by 17 goals and losing to the same team by 12..might have been 86 but could have been later

Semaphore Central and Exeter almagamated to form Port District from SAAFL to join the SAFA in 1979. Centrals were in Div 1 and Exeter in Div 2 Amateurs in 1978 but the SAFA made us go into Div 3 when we started in 79.

Port District won the 79 Div 3 title and then never went any higher than Div 2.
They later joined the SAAFL in 1984 and made it back into Div 1 by 1990.
PDFC won the A1 title in 1992 beating Broadview.
Correction, Port Districts won the SAFA Div 2 Premiership in 79 and then played SAFA Div 1 from 1980 -83 and then back to SAAFL in 1984.

Correction....Port Districts won the SAFA Div 2 Premiership in 1979 in their first year and then progressed in 1980 to Div 1 SAFA....Lucky to play for them from 1979 to 83 and then again 89,90.
