Hi Footy fans...

Last weekend we saw our first drawn game of the year in a thriller over at Tiger-land. In fact so far this season there have been some early contenders for Match of the Year going by those nail-biting finishes, a common denominator at the moment has been the Redlegs who up to this point have won their three games by less than a kick. Surely at some point that luck was going to run out or they would start showing some of that form that took them into a Grand Final last season? The Roosters were going to need to show their depth after their showing last week, or were the Doggies going to take advantage of a depleted line up? But the real question was whether or not the Panthers could shake off their last quarter fade out at the bay and conquer the on and off Crows. This was the Easter Weekend, with close to 15000 SA footy-heads taking advantage of unseasonably warm weather... read on, folks.

Welcome to the Round 4 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

First up in this week's wrap, it's the classic and traditional rivalry under the lights of Coopers Stadium, the Redlegs facing the Magpies on the Thursday night. The Redlegs re-gained the Williams-Gallagher Cup from their old-time rivals after taking both games last season, with a four-goal win in Round 6 at home, followed by a 28-point win at Alberton in Round 12. Both sides were victorious last weekend, with the Redlegs again escaping with the points against Sturt by five points and the Magpies putting one over the reigning premiers at Alberton. It was a shootout opening quarter, the only issue was the accuracy with both sides unable to put some serious points on the board. The Magpies would lead by a point at quarter-time after kicking 2.4 to the 'Legs 2.3. The accuracy improved in the second quarter, especially for the Redlegs. They bagged 7.1 while the Magpies fell short on their shots for a return of 5.4 and would find themselves down by eight points at the half-time break. When play restarted, the Magpies managed to get back to within a point after six minutes with their 2.1 to the 'Legs single goal. But in the space of four minutes the pressure was back on, the Redlegs kicking three goals in that time. The third term saw the Redlegs score 7.2 to 3.2 as the deficit was out to 32 points by the final change. Norwood would match the 'Pies goal for goal in the final term, both scoring four goals each. Along with a pair of behinds, the Redlegs would run out 34-point winners. Lewis Johnston was named Norwood's best on ground, Port voted Jackson Trengove as their best.

The next three games would take place on the afternoon of Good Friday, the first finds us at the Prospect Oval for the Northern Derby between the Roosters and the Bulldogs. Last season, it was the Bulldogs that possibly awoke the sleeping dragons of Menzies Crescent after inflicting a 61-point hiding on the Roosters in their opening round encounter at Elizabeth. North went on to win the next five games, then after a loss to South, got back on track in time to win the return match against Centrals at Prospect in Round 11 by nine points. The Doggies opened their 2019 account against the Bloods last week, while the Roosters still had a negative points situation on the ladder after dropping points against Port. Worse still for North, a swag of senior players were out due to either suspension or injury and their coach was ill as well. The Dogs opened strongly while the Roosters struggled in front of goal early on, kicking 5.3 to 2.5 to lead by 16 points at quarter-time. Slowly though, North started to climb back into the game albeit slowly. The margin would be back to a couple of kicks by the long break, they scored 3.2 to 2.3 to cut the Dogs lead down to 11 points. The Bulldogs were only just able to keep their heads above water, the contested ball and clearances being their achilles heel. Their saving grace was perhaps defence, because their forwards had a dog of a time in the third term where they scored 1.6 to 2.3. At three quarter-time, Centrals led by eight points. In the end, the Bulldogs held firm and escaped with the points. They kicked 2.1 to 2.2 to take a seven-point win, but coach Roy Laird still lamented those aforementioned issues. Jarrod Schiller was named Centrals' best, while the Roosters named Jarrad Allmond as their best afield.

About an hour after things kicked off at Prospect, match number three was taking place at the City Mazda Stadium in Richmond for the Western Derby between the Bloods and the Eagles. All the points from their two matches last year went to the Eagles, firstly with their 34-point win in Round 1, then a 21-point victory in Round 11. While the Bloods have been trying to find their form in Season 2019, the Eagles' faithful are wondering what is up with their mob. An opening round win against North a distant memory with losses to Sturt and Adelaide over the last two weekends. West showed little glimpses of what they could do against the Dogs and if there was anytime that the Bloods needed to respond it was now. Although they peppered their goal in the opening quarter, the Eagles weren't getting that much luck at their end themselves. West scored 5.6 to 1.4 to lead by 26 points at the first change. The goal-scoring yips continued for the Eagles in the second term, chipping a mere few points from the Bloods' lead going into the half-time break instead of perhaps nicking the lead. Their score of 3.6 to 3.1 brought the gap back to 21 points come half-time. That was as close as the Eagles got to the Bloods, the home side producing a game-breaking third quarter effort of 7.1 to the Eagles' 2.3 to take a 49-point lead into the final stanza. There was little more that the Bloods needed to do from here, the gap was cut back to 37 points in the end after the Eagles scored five goals to three in the closing term. Will Snelling was named best for West, the Eagles named Jordan Foote as their best on ground.

Now for a little twilight action for the fourth game of the weekend, the Tigers taking on the Double Blues at the ACH Group Stadium in Glenelg. In Round 8 last season, the Blues handed the Tigers a 44-point hiding at Unley. But in the last home and away fixture for the season, their visit to Tiger-land ended in tears. In fact, it was possibly the beginning of the end of their 2018 premiership defence. Sturt not only went down by five points, but they also lost several key players to injury which would help bring about their downfall in September. The Tigers were perhaps unlucky not to have nicked maximum points from their draw with South, while the Blues were the latest case of "so close yet so far" against the Redlegs. The Blues had the better of the scoring early on as the Tigers put several opportunities wide to find themselves 10 points down at quarter-time, the scoreboard reading 4.2 to 2.4. Glenelg would cut that lead down to a couple of straight shots by the half-time break, scoring 4.1 to the Blues' 3.1 in the second quarter. In reality they could have been in front by this time, a few other entries into their 50 yielding zero rewards can be put down to Glenelg's forwards getting poor passes or unable to hold onto a mark. The Tigers' consistency broke through in the second half, although still spraying some shots on goal they kept the Blues to just 1.2 whilst kicking 4.4 for themselves to take a 16-point lead by three quarter-time. The final quarter ended up an arm-wrestling contest, but it was the Blues' turn to have a shocker in front of goal and despite outscoring the Tigers 2.5 to 1.4, the visitors still went down by nine points. Tigers captain Chris Curran was named best for Glenelg, the Blues would vote in Zane Kirkwood as their best on ground.

The final match for the weekend took place on the Easter Saturday afternoon, we now go down to the Flinders Uni Stadium in Noarlunga where the Panthers hosted the Crows. The Panthers took out both games against the injury-riddled Crows last season, while their initial encounter in Round 3 was a scrappy outing resulting in a 20-point win, their follow-up game was just an all-out massacre. South ran riot in Round 11, inflicting a 112-point rout. A more powered-up Adelaide unit fronted up at Woodville last week to down the Eagles by 23 points, while the Panthers had to settle for a share of the spoils with the Tigers with their 70-all draw. The Panthers had a shocking first quarter, they were kept to just three behinds while the Crows rammed through 6.2 with the breeze to lead by 37 points at the first change. They managed to find the big sticks in the second term, but the gap was to be stretched out to 43 points by the long break after Adelaide scored a further 3.3 to 2.1. After the break it was the Panthers that came out with a renewed vigour, the Crows seemingly falling asleep at the wheel. Despite some wasted shots on goal, they kept Adelaide scoreless for the entire quarter and brought themselves back to within a kick of the lead by the final change. South scored 6.6 to nothing, the Crows ahead by a single point at three quarter-time. The Panthers kept trying in the last quarter, but for the second week in a row they would have to share the points. They scored 2.3 to 2.2, their second goal being that which squared things up at 73 points each. To make things even more gut-wrenching for South is that when the siren went, they were closing in on their goal. Matt Rose was named best for the Panthers, Adelaide named Myles Poholke as their best afield.
