Hi Footy fans...

The business end of the season is finally in full swing as the major round kicked off this past weekend. Four teams kissed this year goodbye, the other five -- Central District, Norwood, Woodville-West Torrens, Glenelg & South Adelaide -- remained to chase the ultimate prize in South Australian football, the Thomas Seymour-Hill Trophy. This week, another team would join those unfortunate four that are already planning for next year. The Elimination Final and Qualifying Finals begin the four-week quest for glory at AAMI Stadium.

Welcome to the Week One Finals edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

First up in this week's wrap, we start with the Elimination Final. No second chances... no next week... just next year. This is the situation that beckoned the Tigers and the Panthers. Finals football has been a time of pain and suffering for Tigers fans for a long time, so many chances squandered over the 90 years of involvement in the league that has seen them take only four premierships. This decade has seen them contest finals four times but all those opportunities went begging, with a grand final appearance in 2008 and a straight sets exit in 2009 after finishing minor premiers. On the other hand, South Adelaide have had a longer premiership drought than the Tigers. The 1964 premiership was the last time the Panthers took out the title, their last opportunity in 1979 fell flat and finals football appearances have been few and far between after the 1980's. The 2006 season was their last tilt at finals. Glenelg have had a rather tumultuous season with up-and-down performances as well as sacking Mark Mickan during the second half of the season, while South have steadily climbed the ladder after finishing last in 2010.

The game started off with a Glenelg goal within 30 seconds of the start, an ill-timed bump on Ben Kane by Bradley Crabb allowing the Tigers to grab the first score. South finally answered with their own major in the fifth minute, after scoring a behind only a minute before-hand the Panthers worked the ball back to Michael Wundke. That goal would soon be followed by a second goal to Andrew Ainger. The Panthers were all over the Tigers in the first term, the scoreboard reading 5.4 to 2.4 at quarter-time. South would lose Josh Thewlis here, a shoulder injury bringing his season to an end. Although a piece of poor judgement on Trevor Cranston's part indirectly led to a South goal early in the second term, the Tigers would reel the Panthers' lead back to within striking distance. Alex Grima started the Bays' off with his goal at the eight minute mark, Kane Tenace added his own at the 11th minute. A Ben Kennedy bouncer at 13 minutes would put added pressure on the Panthers, but the blue and whites would still be ahead at the half-time break after a total of 3.3 to Glenelg's 4.2 saw Souths hold a 13-point lead.

When play resumed, the Panthers would get the ball rolling with a goal to Ainger in the first minute of the third term, but some inaccuracy started to creep into the South camp with some crucial misses keeping the door open for the Tigers. But they could only beat on the door as South's opportunities on goal were more plentiful. At three quarter-time, the Panthers would extend their advantage to four goals after kicking 3.6 to Glenelg's 2.1. The Panthers' were just hungrier than the Bays in the end, despite South continued inaccuracy on goal they would kick away to victory with a 3.4 to 2.3 final quarter. South Adelaide won by 31 points, but some undisciplined play by Mitch Sandery saw him put on report. Nick Liddle was voted best afield for the Panthers, while the Tigers named Paul Adlington as their best on ground. The Panthers will contest the 1st Semi-Final next Sunday.

More action followed the blue & whites' win, next up we look at the Qualifying Final between the Redlegs and the Eagles. These two teams aren't strangers to each other in finals, these two clubs fought out a low-scoring, nail-biting Preliminary Final last year as the Redlegs sent the Eagles crashing out of the 2010 finals race with a five-point win. But the Eagles can claim a better-timed win over the men from The Parade, their breakthrough 1993 premiership as a merged club coming at Norwood's expense. Their 2011 encounters were both wins to the Eagles in Rounds 5 (Norwood) and 16 (Woodville), giving the impression of a psychological edge working for them going into this contest. The record of these clubs in recent finals campaigns have the Eagles making several finals apperances and one premiership in 2006 while Norwood haven't tasted that glory since 1997 after a one-goal loss in last year's decider. There would be no doubt that the Bulldogs coaching panel were watching this one, the minor premiers taking notes in preparation for their encounter with today's winner.

The game would start relatively even as the two teams matching each other on the goal tally. It would take close to seven minutes for a major score, the Redlegs posting their first through Darren Pfeiffer. The Eagles would follow with a goal of their own after eight minutes, a defensive error by Kieran McGuinness handing Adam Grocke an easy score. Cam Shenton would pop up at 12 minutes with a long 50+ metre shot, but would end up being a bit of a villain six minutes later after giving away a free. A supplementary 25m penalty would allow the Eagles to add a second goal, but whether or not Jarrod Allmond went out of bounds in his route to that major wouldn't be debated long. Norwood's inaccuracy would see them up by four points at quarter-time, 3.4 to three goals, but soon, all too soon... the Eagles were about to get a serious reality check. From here, it was the Redlegs show, although they did almost cough up an easy Eagles goal in the first minute. That was the only real black spot for Norwood in the second quarter as they ran rings around the Eagles defence.

Shenton began the pain with his goal at two minutes, then Luke Brown pounced on an errant Ben Grieger handball to score one for himself at the seventh minute mark. The Eagles just seemed unwilling to take some risks, playing slow, defence-reliant football where any attack was read easily by the Redlegs. The Eagles' only goal of the term came at the 16th minute, by half-time the 'Legs added 6.3 to the Eagles' lowly 1.3, Norwood up by 34 points. The Redlegs took their foot off the gas a little in the third term, but despite some poor shooting on goal, the Eagles' softly-softly approach wouldn't trouble them in the least. At three quarter-time, Norwood would hold a 49-point lead after adding 3.4 to 1.1. The Redlegs finished the match decisively, after the Eagles kicked three straight goals they would again fall back to their overly-patient plan which would see Norwood boot home 5.1 to the Eagles single behind to close the game. The Redlegs sent a loud warning to the Bulldogs, a 59-point win sending the Eagles into the sudden death zone. Mat Suckling was named best for the 'Legs, while the Eagles voted Jared Petrenko as their standout.
