Tellme, is there a way of alleviating this pain (or getting rid of the condition alltogether) that does not involve putting a gun to the side of your head?

Because that seems the best remedy at the moment.

No, just use the gun

Painful, aint it. I ended up having spinal injections and apart from 10 minutes once, that did the trick.

I had sciatica caused by a ruptured disc putting pressure on the nerve before my back operation and the recommendation was to place a hard stiff board under the mattress, no more golf or sport where I twisted or turned the back, to watch the way I lifted things and to use a kneel in chair whilst at work. Also had to ensure I always lied down with my back straight and not try to push things. Swimming helped a little bit but it was mainly anti-inflammatory and digesics then to lie down and hope it settles.

The kneel in chair forces you to sit up straight whilst using the computer and I still use it to this day. I hope you don't have to have an operation for it as I ended up having 18 months off work.

I was once in hospital for a week and restricted to bed for a month with it. At the time I had physio and that helped alot but the first time I ever got it I suffered for about nine months and had to take anti-inflammatory drugs. These days it's rare and I'm fine if I recognise when it's coming. Then I just drop everything, take Nurofen and lay back in my posture-care chair and take the pressure off my lower back and I'm usually fine after a few hours or at worst overnight. Then I just take it easy and only do things in moderation for a few days. For me it's treating it before it gets bad that helps me and I never have to go to the doctors with it anymore.

Thanks all for your stories and advice and a special thanks to the member that PM'd me with some very useful hints earlier too.

Saw the doctor this arvo and am seeing a physio during the week. The doctor I saw suffers from it too which was kind of handy, as he knew what I was going through.

If I never have another night like last night then I'll be very happy. Excrutiating stuff and I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy, for it seems that there is nothing you can do to make it go away.

Thank god for anti-inflammatory drugs !
