Hi,

I'm about to get a new computer and I need to temporarily share the internet between two computers for about a month so I don't want to set up any permanent network or anything. Currently my options are get a long network cable and manually unplug the other one so only one computer at a time could use the net, or I also have a crossover cable* and I'm wondering if I can make the internet work through this?

*CAT.5E UTP, RJ 45/M-RJ 45/M UTPE-X10 (whatever the ******** this means)

Yes, the crossover cable will work fine, I did it for a couple of weeks, although it took some time to get the settings correct, but works fine.

Yeah, you will need a crossover, it should be red coloured cable.

I did this with my laptop to pc, I just played around abit, atm I cant recall each step but I will try and explain it. When you have the two connected, goto the computer you have connected to the internet, then goto network places, and click on "setup a home or office network". Cant remember the screens but its a wizard and I think there is an option to let other computers to connect to the internet through this computer... goto your other computer and do the same thing I think. Also, make sure you have ips or dynamic ips setup.

You should run the network setup wizard if you aren't comfortable manually configuring the network. You also need to make sure internet sharing is enabled. This can be done in the connection properties.

You can use the wizard etc, but if you don't want to be offered choices, simply do the following

start->Connect to->Right click on the Internet connection you use->Properties->Advanced->tick box saying "allow other users to connect through this computer's internet connection"->OK

Plug in the cables and that should be that, unless you've been mucking about creating static ip addresses, but unless that means anything to you, then you wont have been.

another alternative is to get a small hub or swich(4 port or similar) (netgear make very clever ones $80 for a 4, 6, or 7 port ones) or a 2 port or 4 port switch modem )again Netgear or netcomm are very easy to use.

Then use either a Cat 5e cable (about $8 to $12 ea)

some newer DSL modems come with a 2 or 4 port switch built in, even the simple ones have a cat5e port and a USB port so you can run 2 machines straight off the machine.

cost isn't that high

most ethernet is cat 5e which is good quality and has low attenuation, USB prob no good more than 5 to 10 metres.
