I know this topic has been done to hell over the last month or so but with Melbourne and Fremantle already looking for coaches I feel that we need to resign him NOW for another 2 years.

If you look at it, who is there that is better, he is proven and has only done half the job of rebuilding our great club and should be given the chance to bring home the bacon.

Our recruiting 1999-2002 was pathetic and we are paying for that now but looking at the youngsters coming through all pre 23 (hislop, nash, slattery, stanton, ryder, gumbleton, neagle, johns, reimers, dick, monfries, hocking, chartres, watson, etc etc) I feel he deserves a chance to see if he can take us to the next level, he has recruited quality talls and good youngsters, now only needs that prime midfielder to get us there.

If we dont re-sign him now we run the big risk of losing him to Freo, he wont go to melbourne of carlton (the only other jobs I can see coming up) but Freo would be an exciting option to any future coach. Underperformed, great list, great training facilities and heaps of money so paying heaps for coaching staff is easy to do (not like melbourne clubs).

Sheedy has earnt the right to another 2 years on his performances over the last 27. He has to be signed immediatley if the club knows what they are doing.

Sheedy is not going to leave Essendon UNLESS Essendon indicate to him they don't want him any more.

You ask "who is there better"
Nobody knows as until someone is given a chance they can not prove if they are better or not.

While Sheeds is great and has been great for us i feel his record flatters him slightly.

In his early years he was far more professional and full time than many of his opposition coaches.
He also turned Essendon more professional.

This allowed us to get the jump on other clubs by snaring key players a new style of play and even professional free kicks.

Maybe he got 1 or possibly even 2 Flags from a combination of professionalism, talent, innovation and desire/passion.

As time has gone on the difference between professionalism in clubs has diminished as has the advantages gained from drafting.

There are really no more "suckers" out there for us to unload our hacks off onto ( Fields for the Danihers, Ridley& Kickett for Lloyd and Lucas etc etc)
so this leaves us with having to draft quality players through the draft just like everyone else.

Sheedy and our club has admitted in the past they have dropped the ball in certain areas.
Who is to say that someone else would have let this happen?

For all his faults he also has many positives but until someone else is given a chance we have no one to compare him to.

Can anyone explain what this article in AGE is all about.

IF IT ever was about how many games Kevin Sheedy and Essendon could win this year it is no longer. The decision to replace Sheedy as coach — the finest to have led a red and black side on to a football field — has in principle been made.
Whether or not it is confirmed next Tuesday night, when the Essendon board next meets, the only debate left to settle now is the choice of how the exit of such a legend is appropriately handled. It is a debate that is important for two reasons.

Just what is it saying. I'm to dumb to understand it.

If we decide after Round 22 to let him go, then he would not have had a chance to say goodbye. We have games against Carlton, Collingwood and Richmond coming up, and these would be big occasions with the knowledge that Sheedy would not be coaching next year. So, the board should make a decision one way or the other, and if he won't be re-signed, then each game from hereon can be a celebration of the 27 years he has been in charge.

Thanks. The article reads to me as if the decision to be Sheedyless next year has already been made.
