Hey brothers,

Thought this seemed like the right place to post this..

Am considering purchasing a Sherrin, full size, leather.. etc.

Few questions:

Are they worth the price?
How do you maintain them? eg) keep the leather in good nick etc.
Are club issue balls good to have - thinking of buying a St Kilda one, with the club logo and stuff on it.

Cheers :thumbsu:

overwhelming response so far:eek:
anyway, i have a sherrin kb (kangaroo brand) which was given to me for a birthday a few years ago. it is the same ball used in afl matches, there are lesser versions e.g. "match" ball etc.
the real deal will set you back around $130 but worth every cent.
having said that, i have never actually kicked the ball, too scared.
so, i noticed a white sherrin kb at my local sports store a few weeks ago in the "blemish" bin. same footy, just white, and had the smallest amount of colour missing from the bottom of the ball on the stitching. (you literally wouldn't notice if it wasn't pointed out). they had it for $70, i thought if it was still there in 2 weeks then i'd buy it.
yesterday i got it, for an extra 10% off too!
so now i will kick that around and keep the red sherrin on top of the entertainment unit.
keeping them clean e.g. wiping off mud and putting the ball in a dry place after it gets wet is a good way to prolong the life.

As the above poster has written, worth every cent. Team balls look a lot better, ideal if you're getting something signed etc, but they cost a little bit more. You will find that a lot of shops dont have these in stock as we dont really make a lot of numbers over and above what the clubs and the AFL order. However it doesnt hurt to get your local sports store to ask, and try order them in for you.

In terms of looking after it, you can use dubbon and rub that into the ball every couple of weeks to help keep the leather in the best condition possible. Never put the ball infront of a heater or leave in direct sunlight.

I hope this helps

I have a west coast team ball (got it for $80) I lather it in dubbin all the time like once a week

I always dry it with a towel after kicking it around in the rain but is there anything else I could do to help protect it? I only ever kick it on grass or artificial turf, concrete shredded the one i had when i was younger

hi gents,

i have 20 - 30 sherrins that have been trained with by our footy club this season.

i'm hoping to give them a scrub and clean and try to get some life out of them again next season as most of them are pretty new.

any suggestions on how best to clean older footy's and gettign them looking new-ish again?

much appreciated.

Get some Dubbin rub it on leave for a few hours then polish 'em with an old rag.

Did you play in a club? If you do, get yourself a decent footy if you dont, then get those burley footballs

Got a Burley and a Sherrin, the Burley is probably 6+ years old now, and still in pretty good condition. Scuffed up a bit on the points from bouncing it on the road while walking to the oval, but considering the amount of use it gave, it has kept it's shape pretty well.

Took my Sherrin overseas to Germany with me for 6 months. It copped a massive bollocking from hitting the fencing around soccer pitches and parks and such. Lost a bit of its grip from kicking it around when the deck was a bit muddy, but it's freshened up in the dry over here.

Pretty much, as long as you dont take the piss and scratch it up on roads and walls and such, they maintain pretty well. At the end of the day for me, it's a football, not a collectors item, so I don't polish it up like a medievel broadsword. Saying that, if it's a rainy day and you really wanna go kick it down the park, you're probably better off taking your old trusty munga down, and belt the shit out of it. No point losing the shape unless you have to.

Btw, anyone know the weight different between a Burley and Sherrin? When kicking both alternatively, it feels like the Burley is a good 20-30% lighter. It's almost like kicking a kids toy ball around... :(
