Apparently, a member of the Vic media has noted that we over do our celebrations after each goal.

A thread was started on the BF main board, but that debate was highjacked by a load of Eagle supporters slagging off on us, so I thought I'd ask the Freo supporters;
Do we have too many show ponys in our team?

Mentioned the exact thing to bloke I was sitting next to on Friday night. Came about when Rodger delivered a nice grass burner to Pav at the Subi end near the players race. Rodger hit Pav on the chest then proceeded to turn around a look for his man. No high fives no nudges or winks just a look of 'the job aint finished yet'

I said to the bloke that is way we should playing, none of this finger pointing in the air running around doing one arm aeroplanes.
I have no problem with celebrations but I reckon there is a time when you play the crowd and a time when you just get on with it.
Our guys should be just getting on with it.

I agree. A lot of the time the celebrations are not warranted. To me it suggests an attitude of putting personal glory before the team ... players are more interested in making themselves look good and play as individuals, rather than playing as a disciplined team unit. Kick a goal, pump your fist, a few slaps on the back with those around, ruffle the hair, drink some water. Repeat. All that is needed.

That's the silliest and most baseless slur against Freo I have heard in donkey's. It would make sense to slag off a team for celebrating goals when they are getting their arses kicked but we were never headed in that game and had at least two periods of complete and utter dominance which finished the Bombers for the night. When all the celebrating was being done.

Better to ask why Courtney Johns from the LOSING side was spoontering in his trousers after McVeigh got his goal.

Oh, to lift his teammates and build on a bit of energy?

If you don't think Freo have the right to celebrate kicking goals, then your disdain has reached the point where you should just log onto this ****hole and say "Purple is gay" over and over and over again.

Sam Lane, you slackbreasted moocow. I am talking to you.

How's about telling Caaaaaarlton to never even look remotely happy when they are getting their obligatory datepunch?

(Incidentally, I am not Bigger. I am just using his account - apologies bigfella.)

Fair call. There is a time and a place for celebrations, and I agree that best time to celebrate is after a great goal, or after the game.
I don't think Freo are celebrating to the degree that is hurting our performance though, and I don't think we celebrate more than other teams. The media accusation in question strikes me as a case of condescencion toward Freo rather than a valid criticism.

I am talking about run of the mill goals and the degree of celebration. If Pav snaps a beauty like he did from the boundary against the Swans, then lap it up. But when someone runs into an open goal from 25m out straight in front, no need for over the top celebrations like half our players often do. They CAN celebrate, the point is that sometimes they go too far when they should be worried about other things. They should run to their teammates who set the goal up, not to the crowd. ANd this thread is not about the Essendon game, it is about all games. We often go over the top when the game is over and we are well behind.

All teams have players that 'over-celebrate.' It get's the crowd going, which spurs on the players, so I'm all for it.

I'm sure noone is complaining when the goal is actually kicked. Celebrate the goal, get the crowd into it - the freo crowd has become more mellow and mundane than usual this season for good reason, no harm trying to spark it up a bit.

I think all sides need one or two, we've got Farmer and Headland you expect it from them, but I don't think its good for the captian and vice captains to carry on - sends the wrong message to thier players IMO.

I must admit to the occasional cringe when Bell and Pav have gone on a bit.

Surely there is more to be concerned about than goal celebrations?

Most relevant reply to this thread.

This kind of criticism smacks of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't.'

If I was forced to choose between my team being criticised for celebrating goals or putting in poor performances which result in fewer goals to celebrate, I wonder which one I'd want?

I got excited about those goals on Friday night because it was a real improvement on how we played against Geelong. If celebrating 'excessively' encourages more goals, I'm all for it.

I think you're missing the point, its not about just the cellabrations, its the attitude and mentality of the players to carry on as such - it probably says alot about our mindset as a team?? Thats the debate IMO.

WTF If you mean they are happy when they kick a goal........I'm happy with that mindset. I'm pretty happy too. Why anyone would be concerned with the way players celebrate after a goal is kicked is beyond me.

Maybe you need to grow a thicker skin and let comments from opposition supporters get to you.

That is after all the reaction that they are trying to achieve.

If it was not goal celebrations it would be something equally innane and pointless in the bigger scheme of things.

Agreed. If they're bringing up the show pony angle it shows they really can't target us in any other area. What's worrying though is that it shows an eagerness to jump down our throats which just goes to show that no matter what happens when we lose next it's going to be party time for the media.

I think this whole show pony thing highlights the need for cheerleaders in AFL football. I know I'd much rather watch a sexy 18 year old blonde woman bounce about with purple green red and white pom poms cheering after each goal than the so called show ponies. Even if they do celebrate, let's face it no one would notice them and everyones happy! Especially me!

That last part is just not true!!

When have our boys ever celebrated a goal when we`re losing?

I love the celebrations, the more the better. We are freo ,we are different, who wants to be like all the other boring teams anyhow. It generates the passion amongst the crowd. I love farmer kissing the heavens or Headland point to me ,saying that ones for you. Lighten up folks , or join the boring team down the road.
