Also.
Leppitsch said there is no risk of Dustin Martin getting ahead of himself following recent positive publicity.

Teammates Nathan Foley and Jack Riewoldt this week described Martin as the best second-year player they've seen, while the Herald Sun yesterday revealed Martin is second to only Hawthorn's Lance Franklin in total score involvements this season.

"I don't think Dustin would get carried away with much," Leppitsch said.

"He's a very quiet character and he keeps to himself. You won't see him speaking too often in the media, that's just his type of personality.

Umm what this got to do with slow starts?

RICHMOND assistant coach Justin Leppitsch says the Tigers' poor first-quarter performances this season are a mental issue that needs to be fixed.
The Tigers have been swamped early in several matches.
"We have addressed it and we did start slowly again on the weekend (against North Melbourne)," Leppitsch said yesterday.
"I guess it was six scoring shots to four when you look at it, and while the gap was still four goals, it's still probably our best result for first quarters.
"It's hard to put a finger on it. I think it's more a mental thing with our group than a physical thing because, physically, we are a very fit team.
"It's just a matter of attacking the game nice and early and we have broached that."

Our slow starts are directly related to our poor defence, Grimes has made some serious errors due to inexperience and the pressure of playing on Buddy and the like early in games. Rance and McGuanne especially are doing some stupid things, McGuanne more than anyone was responsible for our bad start last week.

Start Deledio in the midfield, win the ball straight up and goal.

Memo Leppa, Dimma & any other Tiger strategist...
The bolded bits quoted above from Leppa & LBBenny are directly related IMO... to "attack the game nice and early" you need to have an attacking mindset & this would include getting one of our most naturally attacking players in the thick of the action rather than behind the ball to help mop up in our backline.

Is it just me?
Last week when we needed to actually 'win' the game Deledio went into the middle... seemed to help a bit?

Gee, you fellow BF posters must be getting real sick of my labouring of this point but IMO it's the next logical permanent step in our development.

It's all about being pro-active with the midfield mix. Put our best midfield together and start with them: Cotch/Martin/Foley. Grigg and Lids on the wing.

Was interesting hearing the commentary last week. I think it was Roos saying that Lids needed to play in the middle, then another commentator asked who would get it out of the def 50 if Lids wasn't there, but then Roos answered you wouldn't need to worry about it as much because we'd be winning more of the ball.

This is our "development" year when we need to get ready for a push into the 8 for next year. So we need to start playing the players in the positions they will be in come 2012.

We have drafted a lot of defenders lately so the logic must be surely to release Deledio into the midfield, batch seems the most likely to be able to step into Deledios role, the attacking rebounding defender. Heppel would have been ideal but we obviously felt Batch could do the job whilst picking up the outside mid we desperately needed in Conca.

Deledio, Martin, Cotch, Foley, Grigg, Conca need to start working together in the guts consistently to get to know each others game inside out. If these guys are in the middle our starts will not be slow

There seems to be a definite plan that the coaches are sticking to, I think by mid year we'll see Lids more permanantly in the midfield. Dea will be coming into the side shortly, if he and Batch can add some run out of defence, Newy and Lids can get up into the middle. Connors was/is our other big hope for freeing up Lids, I hope he can get his form up and going.
