It looks like it exploded above Texas before it was meant to land, and all seven astronauts (including the first Israeli in space) are dead.

I presume this would be the first problem with the American space program since Challenger?

and CNN shouldnt be taking sightings from rednecks as near facts.

A plane flying near to it up at 20 000 feet. Not very likely.

Some people shouldnt be allowed a brain...not that these people have one.

I know I've been looking at the headings and I guess it's sad that there are so many arseclowns out there who just don't realise that any joke they make about it is not only bad taste now, but will pretty much be in bad taste forever.

Here is what was written about the god found it offensive:

"There was an Israeli on board and a Hindu. God loves these people but finds their ideologies offensive. Both are forms of class/racial supremacy. God finds this offensive. "

Love the logic . This is why abortions should be legalised, to prevent the world from having to put up with idiots like these that somehow make it into the world. Been listening to this on BBC as it's just about all it was talking about after the soccer broadcasts and got some emails from CNN about it too. Heaps of stuff about it on cnn.com.

Heard on BBC that something blew off a rocket and hit the shuttle during takeoff.
How many more shuttles do they have left? I Know of Endevour and Discovery, are there any others.

Doesnt look good for the International Space station now. Hopefully they can get the 3 crew on it back down to earth.

At worst, they do actually have escape pods, Russian soyuz, but the Ruskis will probably send something up a bit more reliable than the old US space shuttle Lada.

The ISS is totally rooted, and possibly NASA along with it. Without the space shuttle, the necessarilly frequent trips to ISS won't happen and the project, which was always on a tightrope budgetwise, will probably be canned completely.

NASA, which was already struggling to maintain currency in the budgetary circles of Washington will be severely hamstrung. It had committed a huge amount to the ISS, both in terms of focus and budget. And yet the project was severly over-running cost etimates. Possibly only the competition put up by the Japanese, Chinese, Russians and ESA will spur on the legislators.

I'll confirm that for you, Brett-- spot on.

First one since 1986-- which, all things considered, means that NASA's safety record is pretty good.

But wow, my heart's still in my throat about this. Even on the morning after.

"Challenger" was one of those first things I was thinking of when I saw this on the news-- that, along with other watershed moments in our lives, you remember exactly where you were when it happened.

However, also like the Challenger, it'll probably be another several weeks or months before we all know what went wrong, what caused the accident.

What a horrible tragedy. Condolences to the families of the victims, of course.

NASA has three shuttles remaining, with none being launched in the last decade. In order of existance: Discovery (1983), Atlantis (1985), and Endeavour (1991). Columbia was commisioned in 1988.

Just heard the tragic news while flicking through the channels and saw the headline on CNN.
This will be a huge dent in NASA's space missions and could set it back a few years like the previous Challenger disaster.
Condolences to all family and friends of the victims.

"Today was a Good Day-
6 symbols of American Imperialism, and one symbol of Israeli Imperialism destroyed by God on Texas."

"2 EYEWITNNESS IN SEPERATE interviews said that they saw planes next to it.-1 guy had binoculars and said they had chase aircraft next to it.He viewed it well before there were any problems.--we dont have aircraft that can even keep close to the shuttle at the altitude and speed when its re-entering.--interesting"

"INDIA MASSACRED 5000 MUSLIM WOMEN CHILDREN AND BABIES...
DO YOU NOT SEE A CLEAR MESSAGE IN THIS?
JEWS AND HINDUS ARE KILLING MUSLIMS - MUSLIMS ALSO KILL THEM
THE DIFFERENCE IS THE HINDU GOVERNMENT OF INDIA AND THE JEWISH GOVERNMENT OF ISRAEL DO THE KILLING.
HERE TAKE A LOOK
STILL MUSLIMS ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE HELPING TRACK DOWN AND GET RID OF ALQAEDA.....
MUSLIMS ARE AGAINS ALL TERRORISTS, OURS AND YOURS.
YOU ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN MUSLIM TERRORISTS...TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR TERRORISTS IF YOU DARE...."

I love yahoo message boards. It reads as if Bob Brown had invited George Bush, Billy Graham and Osama Bin Laden around to his trailer home to do LSD, and talk about the ways of the world.

New theory is that the Aussie spiders from Glen Waverley escaped and got into the wiring but the crew didn't have an inanimate carbon rod to save themselves

And the dealer wins again in another high risk venture.
