I remember seeing a few fans of this band on here around the time Porcelain came out. Now they have a new album called Threes.

With guitarist Paul Hinojos departing to spend time with former At The Drive-in bandmates Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez during The Mars Volta's latest effort, Sparta gained the services of Engine Down guitarist Keeley Davis.

The resultant album sees a more diverse sound, with Jim Wards vocals finding more depth and strength. There can be comparisons drawn to both U2 and Coldplay in some portions of the music on this album.

Of the early listens, definite highlights seem to be Taking Back Control and The Most Viscous Crime.

Anyone else had a listen yet? If so, what are your thoughts?

Im still not sold on Jim Ward as a vocalist. Maybe this album will change my opinion.

I feel sorry for Sparta. Will always be living in the shadow.

Heard the single on the J's and it didn't sound too bad. Will have to give it a crack.

Alot of new albums to listen to...Isis, Deftones and now Sparta.

Not bad, but not as good as the first album, more on a par with the second. They really haven't updated their sound much and I have to say, while I was originally defensive of Sparta as against TMV (and Sparta were better than TMV live the first time I saw both), TMV I must admit now are more exciting and Sparta have stagnated.

I just wish ATDI would come back. They were the perfect synthesis of both bands - Sparta are the editors TMV badly, badly need. Look at a song like Arcarsenal - simply amazing, and as many musical shifts in a couple of minutes as TMV do in 10. Sparta's capacity for editing and TMV's capacity for exciting music were the perfect combo.

ATDI... :(

good post, can't say anything more accurate than that.

Mars Volta have always been better than Sparta…

I really thought that Porcelain was mediocre at best so I cant see myself getting into the new one…

And we cant forget talent. We all know who has that.
Hinojos knew, couldnt wait to get back on board.

Oh rubbish, Sparta have plenty of talent. Go listen to their first album. There's also plenty of great tracks on Porcelain and Threes.

What they miss is that sense of the strange, wild and thrilling that the two TMV guys brought to the table.

What TMV miss is the sense of restraint, killer sequencing/songwriting and arranging that the Sparta guys brought to the table.

As I said, ATDI was the perfect synthesis of both. Neither holds a candle to ATDI.

Tremulent was exceptional, Deloused was great, Frances was boring, and Amputecture seems to follow suit. I steered clear of Scabdates purely on the shocking reviews. I'm beginning to find TMV completely self-absorbed w*nk music these days. It is cooler to say you like them better, but I just don't. Not saying Sparta is great, but agreeing that ATDI was better as it was balanced.

Scabdates is fantastic. My only beef with it is that there isnt any FTM in there. Its basically extended versions of Take the Veil and Cicatriz. But thats ok, i can live with that.

They are playing in Brizzy at the end of the month. Cant wait to be honest. Have seen them at the BDO twice but missed the side show at the Arena earlier this year, the day after BDO.

Cedric had tonned his live performances down significantly since his ATDI days, but reading some reviews over the weekend, it seems the beast has been unleashed again.

FTM boring?

I actually love all three bands, but for different reasons. ATDI for it's fist-in-the-air post hardcore ballsy rock... TMV for their weird ass sound that's like a drug trip and Sparta for their more mellow laid back kind of sound.
Overall I'd rank them: ATDI, TMV then Sparta, but all three kick ass.

To say Sparta is talentless is just laughable... Cataract off their first album is a fracking beautiful song. After listening to Threes several times now, I'd have to give it a big thumbs up... Taking Back Control and Unstitch Your Eyes are the highlights for me... though at this stage I still prefer Porcelain.

Couldn't agree with anything you said there more. Summed it up perfectly.
I do like threes though, good solid album but not up there with wiretap.
