Looks like the TAC has it's own problems to deal with. Will it sack itself I wonder????

Speeding TAC staff booked

TRANSPORT Accident Commission staff are doing exactly what they spend millions of dollars telling the public not to do – speeding.

A worrying 19 TAC cars were booked for speeding last year, documents obtained by the Herald Sun under of Freedom of Information show.
The embarrassing revelations come soon after the TAC stripped Richmond Football Club of its sponsorship when a young Tiger was busted speeding and drink-driving.
During the 2003-04 financial year, 19 speeding offences were incurred by TAC cars. The highest recorded breach was doing 77km/h in a 60km/h zone.

The TAC failed to notify the Traffic Camera Office of the car's driver within the statutory 28 days and was fined $600.

Three fines were for speeding 10-15km/h over the limit; the remaining 14 were for drivers nabbed less than 10km/h over the limit. The TAC pointed out that the majority of the speeding fines involved speed limit breaches of less than 10km/h.

But such minor indiscretions have been the focus of the TAC's recent Wipe Off 5 campaign.

In condemning speeding last year, then TAC Minister Rob Hulls said: "The message is getting through, but there are still a number of people who think it's OK to go just a little bit over."

TAC spokeswoman De-Arnne Schmidt said yesterday all employees had to sign the TAC's safe driving policy. Those caught speeding faced mandatory counselling.

"Obviously the TAC would be the first to reinforce the message that speeding remains a major cause of accidents," Ms Schmidt said. "We do take it very seriously."

She said the TAC's 600 employees used the commission's 80 fleet cars.

Ms Schmidt said no TAC board members or senior management were fined. Four fines were incurred by authorised but non-TAC staff, she said.

TAC Minister John Lenders said yesterday the Government had high expectations of the TAC.

"While it is worth noting that the percentage of those fined is lower than the community average, it is no excuse for speeding," he said.

The TAC last month withdrew its sponsorship of Richmond Football Club after forward Jay Schulz was caught drink-driving and speeding.

Last year, the TAC fined Collingwood Football Club, which it also sponsors, $10,000 after player Cameron Cloke was caught doing 144km/h on the Eastern Freeway.
