Post-season surgery

Seven senior listed players will have post-season surgery.

After several years of enduring shoulder pain, Matthew Pavlich in conjunction with the club’s medical staff has decided on an operation. Pavlich was one of Fremantle’s stand-out players in 2005 with a career best 61 goals and 178 marks.

Fremantle Football Manager Steven Icke said Pavlich’s ability to take his game to another level after a permanent move to centre half-forward was indicative of the 23 year olds character and outstanding leadership at the club.

On several occasions this season Pavlich endured pain in the shoulder after it popped out during games but battled on and continued to produce top shelf performances.

“For a player to rely heavily on his marking and his contested marking, it is a significant adversary that he plays with. It’s a great testament to his courage and his ability to deal with pain,” Icke said.

“Most people like you and I wouldn’t be able to get on the ground, let alone be able to play at the standard he plays at.”

Pavlich was selected for the third time as an All-Australian this week and is tipped to feature prominently in the Brownlow Medal and Fremantle’s fairest and best award, the Doig Medal which he won in 2002.

The following players have had or will undergo surgery during the post-season:

Heath Black – foot
Josh Carr – hip and hand
Matthew Carr – elbow arthroscopy
Ryley Dunn – knee
Paul Hasleby – groin and foot
David Mundy – knee
Matthew Pavlich – shoulder

The club will not be releasing any further information at this time. The recovery and rehabilitation periods for each player will obviously vary and the status of the players return for pre-season training will be advised when pre-season training resumes on 7 November.

Crikey, 3 of our best players this season - Pavlich, Black and Mundy - were all playing with injuries! I would love to see how they performed if they were fully fit. Add to that a fit Haselby and Carr bros and we may have been able to scrape into the finals. F ing injuries...
