The Sydney Thunder are our Greater Western Sydney team in the Big Bash League. This thread is for those of us who want to discuss all things lime green!
The team made their debut in the inaugural 2011-12 season. The team mirrored our AFL team's start to existence with poor performances in its first years in the competition. The Thunder finished last in each of its first three seasons and second last in its fourth season.
2011-14, Thunder played home games at ANZ Stadium. After playing a couple of home games at the Sydney Showground Stadium in 2015, they signed up as permanent residents.
The 2015–16 Big Bash League season marked the first year in which the Thunder finished in the top half of the table, finishing 4th overall. They started the season well, faded toward the end and just squeezed into the finals. From there they went on to defeat the Melbourne Stars at the G. Our stars that season included Michael Hussey, Shane Watson, Usman Khawaja, Andre Russell and Jacques Kallis.
Thunder also won the inaugural women's title on the same day, on the same ground, by the same margin and with the same balls remaining (3 wickets with 3 balls remaining)!
The 2016/17 season wasn't quite as notable for on field success. With Shane Watson as captain the side struggled with form and injury. Hussey and Kallis were also sorely missed.
BBL07 and WBBL03 will be on us in no time. I have locked in my membership, and hope we can pull together a good team. Who will we sign? With DreRus ruled out on suspension, can Watto convince De Villiers to give us a go?
