Hi all. Sorry to intrude.

Since Hawthorn has gone to Tasmania, we have made record profits, stability and success on field, with minimal backlash in Melbourne.Even created some kind of home ground advantage down there.

Would you take up a similar deal?
What if you were to gain 8K members, $2m+ each season, everything that Hawthorn has?
How would you feel about it?

Why hasn't Melbourne tried to do something like this to save themselves?
Hobart? Canberra? There have been options and opportunities.

What if you could take over the current Tassie deal from Hawthorn?

Tassie is taken by North and Hawthorn, I doubt either would like to relinquish that. Not much left for others down there, Darwin however we have been asserting ourselves into and while we only play a single game there the past few years from everything I've heard we will be playing a few more than that in the coming years.

The problem with Darwin is it's almost a guaranteed loss the next week due to the humidity

Hawthorn, and to a lesser extent North always had a decent following down here to convert to members. I have lived here for about 35 years and with all due respect, i estimate i have met less than a dozen Melbourne supporters in Tassie during that whole time.

It's a reality that most of the smaller Melbourne clubs have to supplement their incomes with relocated home games.

As long as it's handled in a professional manner, which sees the club make money and doesn't compromise the needs of Melbourne-based members too much, then I'm all for it.

The downside of Darwin as mentioned above is its potentially taxing conditions, however I feel that if we play there with some regularity we will be able to manage this much better (via experience).

in answear to your questions.
1) yes i would take an offer like that on behalf of the dees if we got everything hawthorn gained from it.
2) i would feel great if there was any chance of this happening and i was to be successful
3) why hasn't melbourne done something like this to save themesleves? because 1 melbourne did try by ranching into darwin as it has done, but under the stupidity of the old melbourne we have branched into dumb projects such as china.
4) about Camberra no team really has any holding their all AFL clubs filter through it.

so i really would like melbourne to have what Hawthorn have but we chose darwin and darwin in a way supported us so we can't turn our backs now. also a well known football state wouldn't want a team of our class promoting their name. i agree with jeff kennett to a degree that melbourne carries and somewhat represents melbourne in a way, and if it wasn't for our strong history the MCC would have kicked us out of the MCG like Fitzroy and their home grounds. Tassie won't want melbourne to endorse the state until it does the one simple thing that will turn everything around, play footy!

we should first think about representing and doing what is right by our home area before branching off, all this can be solved by the success of the players on the field, and we need time to turn it around

It's too late to pitch a camp somewhere where there isn't an AFL team now.
GWS have Canberra, we've discussed Tassie.

I think the best option is what we did a while back to Brisbane, sell home games to other teams. Play home game in Brisbane, Perth etc

i know what i said before, but kadina park is interested in growing footy down in geelong a bit and wouldn't mind a team besides geelong playing home games down there.

not a big thing, but i think that it would good to play home games in kadina park export the melbourne brand inside victoria. north to our doing this in ballerat so why cant we go down to geelong a few times it's convenient and kadina park is interested in other teams playing there.

Could have had Hobart or New Zealand if we weren't all in on this Darwin rubbish. We didn't even get to play the first game there this year, the whole thing is a joke other than the big cheque we get for it.

It is all a bit pointless, I don't mind it but there's not much substance to it. What could make it interesting was if there was a Zone attached to the whole operation so that we got some rights to blokes from the Top End in the way that the northern clubs do currently. I believe the NT is a GWS zone at the moment?

Interesting development:

Seems bridges aren't quite burned down in Tassie yet, but Hawks are committed there until 2016, North there until next year.

St Kilda have said they're not interested (and instead are focusing on NZ), pretty much leaving it open to (as I see it) Hawks, North, Dogs and us.

Seeings as us and the Dogs have never really made any movements down there, it would be surprising to see that change, but a lot can happen in a couple of years, especially now with the AFL having more of a say in our operations.

Short term I would be happier with Tasmania as an option rather than Darwin (less oppressive conditions) but the reality of a relocation to Tas would be much greater than a relocation up north.

Having said that, I generally think Tasmanians have stronger affinities to Hawthorn and Saints (North to a lesser extent) - this is from personal experience. I don't think we have a very strong presence down there and it would have to be something we would need to build up over a long time.

Any deal with Tassie needs to be long term.
The AFL will try to push us out and you guys in (unless North takes up 6 - 8 games).

Yeh I read that article, if a team has 8 home games in Tasmania then they might as well just relocate there, no point having 3 home games in Melbourne still.

I can name literally 1 Melbourne supporter down here. That's nothing against Melbourne, either. Some teams just don't take off here. I don't know a single Freo supporter, either.

For the record, Hawks have a huge following Tigers seem to be a close second down here.

Because we don't need to play 4 games a year in Tasmania to save ourselves. We are playing a couple of games up north and that's it.

Isn't every game we play a guaranteed loss anyway?

Wouldn't be a little weird for a club called Melbourne to be based in tas?

As it could also be argued for teams with Northern or Western in their names. Tasmania is neither north or west of anywhere. Except maybe NZ?
