Magpies excited for signing and trade period

Tasmania Magpies are excited ahead of the AFL Team Manager Signing Period opening, and Trade Period taking place later next week. There are a few things in the works to strengthen the overall side whilst being able to retain the top young talents. Pie 4 Life said a couple of things had already been confirmed. "We've already re-signed Steele Sidebottom as a veteran once again and extend Rising Star Caleb Serong for an extra three years. "We're building a nice core and are really just looking to strengthen various pockets of the field, though we are comfortable with where our spine and midfield is at.

Pie 4 Life said a couple of trades had already been facilitated and would be announced once Trade Week opened. "We think supporters will be really excited about the future and the trades we do, as they will see us continue our rise up the ladder."

The Magpies are yet to commit to any uncontracted player just yet and will weigh up the ones to re-sign later in the period.

Magpies strengthen side with experience

Tasmanian Magpies have brought in four starting 18 players to their line-up in exchange for a number of up-and-coming talents to bolster its side for the 2021 season. Coach Pie 4 Life said the time was right to add extra experience and quality to the line-up after a few years of snaring the top quality draft selections.

"We went into this off-season keen to just add some strength around the ground," he said. "We have a lot of talent across the board, but at some point you have to bring in known quality to the club."

The biggest name coming to the Pies was Patrick Cripps who crossed from Melbourne along with the Demons' 2021 Round 1 selection. In exchange, Jackson Hately went to the Dees with Pick 2.

"Patrick is one of the elite players in the competition, and we raised the possibility of getting him and put Pick 2 on the table," Pie 4 Life said. "When goldcoastsun showed an interest in Jackson Hately, we decided it was appropriate to make the swap, and now we will be what they call death-riding the Dees next year with the Round 1 selection."

Another big trade welcomed defender Jack Crisp to the fold, set to slot straight into half-back in 2021. The reliable Collingwood defender came from Gold Coast, in exchange for Jye Caldwell and Will Hayward.

"Jack is as reliable as they come off half-back, and will really strengthen us in that area," Pie 4 Life said. "We were willing to trade both Jye and Will and had significant interest in them, but with our strength in the midfield and forward half, we felt grabbing an extra defender was a priority. "So when Crisp was put on the table by sausageroll we were more than happy to facilitate a deal."

Joining Crisp in the back half will be Brisbane's Daniel Rich who was exchanged for Liam Baker and Pick 37. The former St Kilda player averaged 78 PPG if you take out his one injured match score, and will be a 20 PPG boost on Baker there.

"As I said above, we identified our defence as a weakness this season and wanted to make that change," Pie 4 Life said. "We knew St Kilda wanted to remain a contender, but they had amble talent across the field, and we thought getting the upgrade from Baker to Rich gives us those extra points and security back there. It was the easiest deal to get across the line thanks to ShaunDuggan ."

Involved in a number of other potential deals with players above, GeeCat and Geelong managed to strike up a deal involving Andrew McPherson and Shane McAdam heading to the Cattery in exchange for Jack Henry and the Cats' 2021 R2 selection.

"It was a relatively straight-forward deal," Pie 4 Life said. "We really rated Andrew for his scoring potential, so wanted a bit more than just Jack, so we picked up the extra selection next year and were more than happy to find Shane another home given our wealth of options in attack. "Jack is a consistent player and in the Cats' best 22, so again, we have basically traded for a defence this off-season.

In the final trade of the day, midfielder Will Setterfield and Pick 21 headed to Melbourne in exchange for Pick 6.

"We rate Will and what he offers, but were keen to get back into that top 10, and given we had picked up Patrick earlier in the trade period, we figured that we could afford to trade out another midfielder," Pie 4 Life said. "We can either now ontrade Pick 6 or take it to the draft, either way we are happy with where we sit."

Tasmanian Magpies Trade Period on Opening Day:

IN: Patrick Cripps, Jack Crisp, Daniel Rich, Jack Henry, Pick 6, 2021 R1 Melbourne, 2021 R2 Geelong

Magpies welcome Goldstein and Murphy

Tasmanian Magpies have signalled their intentions to no longer be the cellar dwellers of the competition by bringing in Todd Goldstein and Marc Murphy to further strengthen the line-up. Murphy was the first through the door, exchanged in a swap for Will Brodie.

"We know Marc had his struggles this year, but he is someone who when fit is obviously in Carlton's best 22," Pie 4 Life said. "He was pretty consistent the last few years up in the 90s for scoring, so if he can get close to that again, then great. "If he can't, then he is still a handy scorer around the mark and further strengthens our depth and gives us more consistency through the midfield. "We've enjoyed dealing with goldcoastsun this off-season as most of our dealings have been swift and fair."

The bigger news of the day was the fact the Magpies brought in their first genuine ruck in many years with Todd Goldstein exchanged for Archie Smith and Pick 6. The top 10 pick was originally acquired in the deal for Will Setterfield, but Pie 4 Life was more than happy to put it on offer for Goldstein.

"We knew we had a fair bit of cap to spend this off-season with a number of players out of contract and us able to trade our depth for a few players," he said. "We were making a number of bids in the off-season thread and kept seeing our players being snatched up via trade which was rather irritating. "We noticed Hatchy1992 was yet to match Goldstein and because of our relationship in the SFA I thought it was worth putting Pick 6 on the table. "Understandably Hatchy was after a ruck replacement, so we added our long-term ruck Archie Smith in for good measure.

"Archie has held us up over the last few years, but with the new rules coming in place where we can't just chuck a tall bloke in when Stef Martin was rucking for Brisbane, we needed a dedicated ruck. "Seeing that West Adelaide were looking to go through a rebuild we opted to pursue Goldstein and hand Hatchy another pick in the top six which will help with that.

Tasmanian Magpies Trade Period on Opening Day:

IN: Patrick Cripps, Jack Crisp, Daniel Rich, Jack Henry, Marc Murphy, Todd Goldstein, 2021 R1 Melbourne, 2021 R2 Geelong

Magpies secure Berry, farewell Murphy and Langdon

After a blockbuster start to the trade period, the Tasmanian Magpies have made a couple of minor trades and secured a free agent for their 2021 list. Brisbane's Thomas Berry was successfully bid on during free agency crosses from the Adelaide Lions to the Magpies for next year in what will provide extra support to the midfield. Berry was signed on a three-year, $450,000 deal.

"We're really happy to have Tom on board and think he has a long-term future at the club," Pie 4 Life said. "We were half expecting Adelaide to match and we would have been comfortable adding a fourth year seeing as his Lions' contract in the AFL is until 2024, so we would be safe in the knowledge he is going to be around for a while. "Tom is a natural ball winner and feel he has a strong future in this form of the game and can only get better, and given the departures of Jackson Hately and Jye Caldwell, he just gives us a bit of support in that area coming off the bench and eventually taking over a midfield spot."

While Berry was walking in the door, Nathan Murphy and Tom Langdon were asked to leave. While ultimately it is a tough decision, both players were in the rehab room so it was closer to the exit. Murphy was traded to Northern Reds Bluesy for Pick 46, while Langdon was set to the St Kilda Titans ShaunDuggan in an upgrade of picks where the Magpies received Pick 37 for and the Titans also received Pick 53, along with Langdon.

"Both of these players have potential there is no doubt about that and it is sad to see them go," Pie 4 Life said. "We would have re-signed them had no one approached them, so it was never going to be a delisting situation, but we felt the moves were better for their career. "I mean for starters, Nathan going to the Northern Reds just seems a natural fit given his hair colour, whilst Tom has the potential to be a high-scoring player but we know his injury battles over the past couple of years. "In particular Tom is someone who could come out and really bite us on the arse in the future, but at the same time he could just as easily never play a game again which we hope is not the case. "Both trades were the easiest possible trades to facilitate and it was great to see both set of coaches on the same wave length.

Magpies officially throw hat in ring with Higgins, McGovern inclusions

Earlier this year, Tasmanian Magpies were tipped to finish last as they rebuilt the list. A late season surge saw the Magpies overtake the Safety Bay Stormers and avoid the wooden spoon. In 2021, those fortunes are expected to further change after a blockbuster trade with West Adelaide to secure the experienced Shaun Higgins and Jeremy McGovern. In a time-is-now approach, the Magpies sought out Hatchy1992 for the big trade, knowing West Adelaide was rebuilding. Throwing top 10 picks Jaidyn Stephenson and Fischer McAsey on the table, and Ryan Byrnes as the stake knives, the Magpies were able to secure the two key cogs at either end.

"We felt we were a defender and forward away from really worrying the top sides, and we have been able to bring them in through the is trade," Pie 4 Life said. "We knew Shaun was a free agent and were willing to bid for him, but were also mindful of trying to package up our players to firstly save some salary cap, but secondly secure Jeremy as well. "It gives us a genuine star key position defender at his best, and a reliable mid-forward who should take over Gary Ablett's role at Geelong. "It bolsters both ends of the field and makes us a lot more damaging."

Tasmanian Magpies Trade Period:

Magpies complete primary list prior to draft

In what was a massive end to the Trade Period for the Magpies, Tasmanian fans can be pleased with the final 2020 product. A host of trades were made to get under the salary cap, and picks exchanged hands like there was no tomorrow. In the end, James Worpel was the only crucial omission from the side, with Ben Keays another top 18 player that farewelled the club. In return, Dan Houston and Nathan Jones slot into the side. Also leaving were delisted and retired Matthew Scharenberg and Kade Kolodjashnij respectively, while project talls Jordon Sweet and Oscar Clavarino joined the black and white. Effectively for the Trade Period, the Magpies were able to establish a heap of late picks for 18, 37 and 46, with Pick 19 effectively cancelling out 18, and therefore it being 37 & 46 for 44, 58, 59, 62, 63, 64 & 65.

"We had to let Ned Guy go from out salary cap operations," Tasmanian Magpies coach Pie 4 Life said. "He just could not count, and unfortunately that is a rather important aspect when it comes to contracts." "We're actually really pleased with where we sit in the draft because while our head coach is a bit of a fantasy nuffy, he probably has a slight advantage when it comes to drafting, so there are no fears going deep in the draft. "He is also quite lazy so picking four consecutive players, and seven in nine selections will be handy for a quick finish to the draft."

Tasmanian Magpies Trade Period:

IN: Patrick Cripps, Jack Crisp, Daniel Rich, Jack Henry, Marc Murphy, Todd Goldstein,Tom Berry, Shaun Higgins, Jeremy McGovern, Nathan Jones, Jordon Sweet, Oscar Clavarino, Pick 19, Pick 44, Pick 58, Pick 59, Pick 62, Pick 63, Pick 64, Pick 65, 2021 R1 Melbourne, 2021 R2 Geelong

Magpies secure Errol Gulden with first selection

TASMANIAN Magpies have secured Sydney Swans Academy member Errol Gulden with their first selection in the 2020 AFL Team Manager National Draft. heading into the draft, the Magpies had picks 19 and 44, and initially wanted to split pick 19 into two picks along with a second rounder from next year. At first no suitable offer was forthcoming and the Magpies were keen to pick Gulden with pick 19, before a deal was struck with Melbourne to send Pick 20 and 44 there in exchange for Pick 36 and a 2021 R2 selection. That Round 2 selection is anticipated to be in the teens, which hands the Magpies a third Top 20 pick in the blockbuster 2021 AFL Draft.

After a number of picks went by, and with Gulden still on the board, coach Pie 4 Life decided to engage with Safety Bay Stormers coach peterss with a similar deal to send the Magpies' second round pick from next year along with Pick 36, in exchange for Pick 26 and St Kilda's third round next year. Effectively between the two deals, the Magpies gave up Picks 19, 44 and a R2 next year for Pick 26, a higher R2 and a R3 selection.

"We're thrilled to be able to welcome Errol into the club via our first selection," Pie 4 Life said. "We knew by trading out Pick 20 we risked not picking him up, and had he gone in the next few selections, we would have just held onto 36 in the end. "By trading in the second rounder next year, that made three, so we could afford to trade out our own second rounder in the process. "We're really excited by what Errol can offer to the club and he has the versatility to play anywhere, though we expect him to be a forward."

Magpies coach "disgusted" by season

IT might not have been their bottom two years of the past, but Tasmanian Magpies coach Pie 4 Life has blasted his club saying it was possibly the most disgusted he had been in his time in the AFLTM. The Magpies finished 10th with a win-loss record of 6-9, and whilst their total score was 8th in the competition, Mr Life said it was well below par.

"We were aiming for a top four finish," he said. "Based on the way we recruited we felt we had the list to compete with the best, and at least be a challenger. "It looked that way in the early rounds, but our mid-season form slump due to a number of factors really hurt us and we never recovered. "To not even play finals was an indictment on the entire playing group."

When asked to throw out some names, Mr. Life was happy to do so.

"Former captains Steele Sidebottom and Patrick Cripps, what in the actual f*** was that? Steele became a borderline does he even make the 18 selection? Jason Johannisen I remember when he actually provided some run and carry, now he's only good because he's versatile. "Others like Higgins and Jones you kind of expect given their age, but it was really disappointing."

However Mr. Life did have some upside.

"We were really excited about what Errol Gulden and Trent Bianco could do and we weren't disappointed," he said. "Jack Crisp and Daniel Rich had outstanding seasons, Max King and Nick Blakey kept developing, and the likes of Kieren Briggs and Jack Henry provided great cover."

Magpies send-off retirees

TASMANIAN Magpies have already had a couple of players depart the club, with Marc Murphy and Jarrod Harbrow both announcing their retirements. Harbrow was a freebie taken in the mid-season draft and did not cost any salary, whilst the club will be happy to free itself of Murphy's one-year, $462,000 contact.

Others out of contract this year include Lachlan Fogarty, Jarryn Geary - who somehow still has another year on his AFL contract - Max Heath, Lachlan Henderson, Dan Houston, Marty Hore, Jason Johannisen, Nathan Jones, Jack Madgen, Jack Mahony, Lloyd Meek, Nick Murray, Jaxon Prior, Bailey Scott and Jordon Sweet, while Steele Sidebottom can be renewed as a free veteran. It is expected Jones as a minimum will retire.

First year gun Errol Gulden is set for a long-term extension after an impressive season.

The Magpies also hold Picks 3, 7 and 19 inside the Top 20.

Ham the entree of AFLTM Trade Period

Tasmania Magpies feasted on Ham, specifically Brayden, as their first deal of the AFL Team Manager Trade Period went through. With plenty of deals to be submitted on day one, the Magpies confirmed the easiest of the lot up first. In bringing in Essendon's Brayden Ham, the Magpies farewelled Fremantle ruck Lloyd Meek for greater opportunities.

"Lloyd told us he'd rather be stuck behind the bloke at his own club in Sean Darcy, than the bionic man in Todd Goldstein," coach Pie 4 Life said. "It was initially a tougher than you'd like deal because both us and Ballarat are eyeing off a flag, so you don't want to give them an advantage, but in the end, I think we came to a fair deal where both parties ended up with a young player on a cheap contract."

Ham signed for two years at $200,000 a year, having averaged 51.9 AFL Fantasy points - 55.2 if you take out his med-sub zero in Round 20 - as a 22-year-old in 2021, and signing an additional year to finish next season. When asked about his hopes for the Magpies.

"Look I don't expect to play and will probably be on the bench, but when called upon to do my job, I'll do it to the best of my ability," Ham said.

Magpies begin main course

AFTER Ham for entree, it was time for the main course, and Tasmanian Magpies unloaded a big deal to kick-off Trade Period. Having been interested 12 months ago in selecting Will Phillips but not being feasible enough to do so, the Melbourne Giants came forward about securing some early picks, and made it happen. The North Melbourne midfielder signed on a three-year deal worth $540,000 a season as the next generation of players to come through. He joined a midfielder at the other end of the scale in Travis Boak who will fill the black and white stripes for at least 2022.

"We're really excited to add two midfielders at opposite ends of their journey in Will and Travis," coach Pie 4 Life said. "Much like Brayden, we don't expect Will to get too many early opportunities, but the hope is that perhaps by season's end he might boost his 47.9 up into the 70s as he develops, as we know he has that potential. "He is a 90-plus scorer easily at his peak, probably more, and just so suited to this format. "Travis you know what you're going to get, just so consistent, averaged 97.7 points this year and will fit in perfectly."

The Magpies farewelled Trent Bianco, Lewis Taylor, and Top 20 picks, 7 and 19 as part of the deal. Mr Life said the initial deal was without Taylor, but for the purposes of the salary cap and fulfilling Boak's salary was included in the deal.

TRADE DETAILS:

Will Phillips ($540k, 3yrs) & Travis Boak ($683k, 1yr) -> Tasmanian Magpies
Pick 7, Pick 19, Trent Bianco and Lewis Taylor -> Melbourne Giants

Top picks fly out the door in search of a flag

IN a deal which can best be described as "s**t just got real", the Magpies have effectively exited any form of meaningful draft activity in 2021, by sending Pick 3, along with Pick 39 and a 2022 second round selection to the Darwin Crocodiles. It was all for a good cause however, with two immediate inclusions into the best 18 flying down to don the black and white in North Melbourne skipper Jack Ziebell, and Essendon forward Jake Stringer. The pair decided the weather was better for their fair complexion in Tasmania, and were also in search of a flag before their career was over. In addition, Pick 43 and a future third rounder were added to the deal.

"We're stoked to get this deal across the line in our first official deal with the Crocodiles," coach Pie 4 Life said. " hotchilli was advertising a sale on the more experienced players hoping to get back into the draft, and we feel this is a really great deal for us, whilst the Crocodiles get a really early selection. "Jack averaged 100 points in his role in defence, and has played at both ends in recent years, whilst Jake is a good scorer for a forward who will come in."

The inclusion of Ziebell means the Magpies defence features three players averaging 98 points or more with Daniel Rich and Jack Crisp also back there.

TRADE DETAILS:

Jack Ziebell ($383k/2), Jake Stringer ($371k/3), Future R3 pick, Pick 43 -> Tasmanian Magpies
For
Pick 3, Future R2 pick, Pick 39 -> Darwin Crocodiles

River(s) flows into Tasmania as Henry returns to Geelong

IN a more straightforward swap, a couple of young, developing players switched sides as AFLTM contenders sorted out another trade. Geelong received former player Jack Henry back after playing for the Magpies this year, whilst in return, Tasmania grabbed Melbourne utility Trent Rivers to add to their depth. As Henry is the more established player, the Magpies also gained a small pick upgrade of Pick 26 in return for Pick 30.

"We really rate Trent and believe he will play a role," Pie 4 Life said. "There's already been some interest in him from other clubs, so we'll look at that, but signing him on a four-year deal it shows that we're more than happy to have him on the list, as we feel $330,000 over four years for a player of his talent is fantastic. "As for Jack, he was a really valuable member of the side, but luckily the inclusion of Jack Ziebell has allowed us to grant him his wishes and he can return back to Geelong."

TRADE DETAILS:

Trent Rivers ($330k/4) + Pick 26 -> Tasmanian Magpies
Jack Henry + Pick 30 -> Geelong

Magpies get back into draft, bring in Moore players

TASMANIAN Magpies have shuffled their draft picks around in order to secure Collingwood key defender Darcy Moore, sending players out such as Jaxon Prior and Jordon Sweet to Darwin Crocodiles and St Kilda Titans. The Magpies had been sitting on a deal with the Northern Reds for some time, with a sticking point over the pick to join young gun Jack Lukosius on heading to the Northern Reds. In the end, they got that pick via West Adelaide Wolverines, bringing Pick 21 in with Pick 53, whilst sending out their two highest picks at the time, Pick 26 and Pick 40. They then on-traded Pick 21 to the Reds with Lukosius to get Moore and Jade Gresham.

"We were really excited to bring in Darcy," coach Pie 4 Life said. "We had no intentions of trading Jack, but in the end, the temptation to secure a long-term key defender on a cheap contract was too great. Along with that, we also managed to bring in Picks 31 and and 53 by the end of this deal, saving salary cap on Prior."

The Magpies would not be done yet though, with plenty more deals in the works to keep the black and white faithful happy.

TRADE DETAILS:

Tasmanian Magpies trade Jordon Sweet (200/2) to
St Kilda Titans for Pick 40

West Adelaide Wolverines trade Pick 21 and Pick 53 to
Tasmanian Magpies for Pick 26 and Pick 40

Tasmanian Magpies trade Jack Lukosius (650/3) and Pick 21 to
Northern Reds for Darcy Moore (361/3) and Jade Gresham (475/4)

Tasmanian Magpies trade Jaxon Prior (240/3) to
Darwin Crocodiles for Pick 31

Magpies get older, open up list space potential

TASMANIAN Magpies have brought in some ancient key position players in a bid to not only provide more experience, but also open up some list spot potentials. The Harbour City Hornets approached the Magpies first about doing a deal for Nick Murray, and the Magpies were keen on getting some high-scoring key position power in the form of Taylor Walker. In the end, the deal got done with the players swapping, and Jason Johannisen and Pick 31 joining Murray heading to the Hornets, and Pick 16 - the Magpies new highest pick - coming to the Apple Isle.

The Magpies were then approached about Kieren Briggs, of which the Tasmanian side was not keen to give up, but the offer of taking the delisted James Cousins off their hands were enough to get the two pastries - Pie 4 Life and sausageroll - talking. Eventually a deal was nutted out with the Magpies securing the services of All-Australian Michael Hurley - who missed all of 2021 - to add to the defensive stocks that feature both Darcy Moore and Jeremy McGovern. They also brought in young talent Connor Budarick.

"We traded out a couple of players we had no real intention of trading out in Kieren and Nick, but that's what happens in trade periods," Pie 4 Life said. "If you can get value in a different way, you're happy to look at all options. "Taylor and Michael are probably two of the more riskier options given their 2021s of self-inflicted and unfortunate injury respectively, but you have to risk it to get the biscuit."
