Just gave away too many frees tonight and looked like a deer in headlights when in a marking contest. It might be just nerves but he looks slow and quite terrible at the moment. Thoughts?

Certainly not his best game but it will take time to adjust. It took Ball and Jolly a few weeks last year but yes wouldn't want to continue like tonight.

Well technically he doesn't, because Brown is injured he's really our only option.

Hopefully only the pre season jitters or lack of intensity.

I was never a big fan of Tarrant and his lack of discipline tonight looked like it was a return to the bad old days.

Certainly Hurley looked a class above him tonight. Just hope its the meaningless pre season. Otherwise on his NAB Cup form, he will be a liability.

Shaw tried to get him to shut his gob when he was complaining about the free for holding Hurley's arm.

Has been very quiet pre-season, and hope he can lift his game because he is now gold-dust in defence.

i agree is some respects. i always felt taz was played out of position - a potentially brilliant footballer left at full forward. from his strengths, and considering his kicking yips, i always wanted him on the wing or half back, as he is superior overhead, quick for his height, and very smart with the ball when not kicking for goal. freo saw that and turned around his career.

certainly not fussed about his pre season form, but he must know keeffe wants & needs game time and so taz cannot rest on any laurels.

Not sure what Taz was thinking when he was having a whinge to the umpire after giving away a blatant free to Hurley.

It seems like Taz is just looking for excuses. I'm sure Taz will sit down with our talented team of coaches and watch some footage of a few of the preseason games and hopefully try to rectify some of his mistakes.

I think people are forgetting just what a big liability Nathan Brown was for most of the season. He mostly played when Presti was injured, and most couldn't wait to get Presti back in the side.

While Brown certainly had the potential to improve this season on the back of a good Grand Final replay showing, he is NOT a proven key defender, and I think it is a little bit overstated how important his injury is to us. The free kicks Tarrant gave away are actually quite similar to the stupid free kicks Brown tends to give away.

I am afraid, I never really saw the brilliant footballer in Tarrant that some people do. He strikes me as a player who struggles to win kicks unless he can run into space for the uncontested possessions.

The old Taz would of abused the umpire he was quite restrained in his questioning and was just seeking answers though the ump was right.

Also he won more then he lost in contests but obviously made a few errors, his knee looks proppy and i wouldn't be surprised had Reid, Brown and Maxwell been available if he would of played.

No backman goes unbeaten as long as they contest which Taz more then does.

You always felt Tarrant was played out of position? Well it couldn't have been due to the kicking, because while Tarrant was never a dead eye dick, earlier in his career his kicking for goal was actually quite decent, it was only towards the end of his time at Collingwood that his kicking deteriorated to the point of being quite bad (and deteriorated even further at Freo). He was certainly a much better kick for goal in the earlier years than Travis Cloke is.

Even Malthouse never saw Tarrant as ever being a defender and I agree. Earlier in his career he had that extra bit of magic that screamed forward, though probably third tall rather than the KPF he was forced to be. I never saw the defensive qualities in him that said he ought to be a defender though, and he doesn't win enough of the ball at ground level IMO to have been a very good wing or HBF. Was quite a feat by Freo to turn him into a defender, and it's probably only due to his maturation as a person that's seen him make a good fist of it, as I always saw Tarrant as having a pure forwards mentality.

Probably a bit like Leon's current change to defender, I think he's matured significantly, and as a result will probably succeed playing in defense where a couple of years ago he'd be an abject failure at it.

Taz just needs to work out what he will be allowed to get away with now that he is wearing the BnW.

Exactly the same as Jolly in 2010.

In 2009, when in a Sydney jumper, Jolly received more frees than he gave away.

In 2010, when in a pies jumper, Jolly gave away more frees than he received. He would have contested less ruck duels than he used to for Sydney yet he gave away the greatest numbers of frees in his career last year.

This robbed him of confidence early in the year, as well as learning a new game style......he was getting pinged for things that he would get away with in Sydney, ie his body work and protecting of the drop zone etc.

Taz in 2010, averaged just 1 free against per game......that is bound to sky-rocket this year.....and it will take him time to adjust. Despite that I thought he did some nice things with the ball in his hand which is a positive.

yep, because the whole world is out to get us!!

Similar thread to the "Jolly needs to improve big time" and "Ball needs to improve big time" (well similar titled threads) that existed throughout the first half of last year, and to my knowledge, both those players turned out alright.

Taz had a shocker tonight, but it was only his second real hitout back with us, and he will only get better with time.

He missed a lot of football last year (most of the second half of the season), so it was always going to take him time to fully recover and get back to where he was before the injury.

I'm not going to make a definitive judgment on Tarrant's return to us yet, I'll wait a few months to see if he can improve, like I expect him to.

It is not about being out to get us.....just simple facts. Perhaps Collingwood playing in more 'prime-time' slots means we get the 'better' umpires who actually pay the technical free's that the 'lessor' umpires let go???

Jolly in early 2010 was frustrated, because he was getting pinged for technical free-kicks that he previously got away with. Last year Jolly gave away the most free kicks of any player in the entire league!! This dented his confidence and made it harder for him to fit into the team.

The stats are there, last year Taz played FB for Freo he gave away 14 frees kicks in 13 games...........in 2009 he gave away only 15 free kicks in 22 games! Pretty short odds that he will give away more than 1 free per game based on the NAB cup.

I think you boys should wait for the season proper. He was a quality defender for us over 2 years, was always rock solid and never ill disciplined as far as i could see. Can't remember if he used to argue with umps but surely thats not a huge problem. The man is quality

I'm slightly worried.

He seems more interested in smiling and looking as if he has been hard done by the umpires but truth of the matter is, he has been chopping arms and putting hands in the back the whole pre season and getting pinged for it (Albeit 2 games). He needs to understand he is going against the rules of our game now.

Harry O is in the same boat. They need to realize that putting hands in the back and using somewhat 'illegal' tactics is not right. Hopefully Mick and co are all over it before round 1 as it is a definite worry.

I think any key defender would struggle with a lack of tall support. He was simply outnumbered. Nathan Brown, Nick Maxwell and Ben Reid missing effected both Tarrant and O'Brien. Lachlan Keefe showed promise again, but he can't be relied upon yet. Tarrant should perform much better when Reid and Maxwell return of course.

It is pretty simple in my opinion. If Tarrant doesn't want to give away free kicks, he needs to stop infringing in contests.

I don't care if umpires missed things at Freo, or if he has changed his style, or whatever. Simply that Tarrant's free kicks against were all there last night and he needs to be better in contests.
