In my experience of audio-visual hoarding, I reckon Teac make half-decent tapes. Crap CD players you wouldn't trust to last a week, but thei tapes and cassette equipment seem to do OK.
I consider it odd that you are having trouble with their stuff.

I still have a TEAC stero system bought back in 87 that can still put out a decent enough (for what i paid for it) sound.
Agree with AKAI though, wouldnt buy it if it was free (which would sort of be redundant anyway)!
Sanyo? Never had a Sanyo TV but my mates got a good little 51cm set that still gives a good picture and he has had it about ten years, hope thats some help BPP.

Case 1
I will never by Teac again.
I was once given a radio for my room at Christmas. After 11 days, I had the radio on, and the stupid thing stopped. Just stopped. After it was meant to be fixed I still am not sure what was wrong with it. All I remember my mum saying was that it wasn't the speakers. So after we get home, we try to find 3AW and the station was not where it should have been. 3AW was near the 1116 3AK frequency. And all of the stations were like this. Even the FM ones. So we took it back and got our money back.
Case 2
Bought a sterio with the large speakers. We flicked through both the AM and FM stations. No problem. We then listened to the footy for 10 minutes. After that, we went back to the FM stations, and they were no longer working. Not one. No problems with the AM stations. It was like the FM stations had never been their in the first place. It was taken back, and have never bought anything from Teac since then. And that was about 3 years ago. Never again.
We now have a Sony sterio in the lounge, and a Sony radio in my room. That has been the case for 3 years. And nothing bad has happened to the radios in that time.
