Tyson Lane in retirement shock - 2/4/07
www.footygoss.com

Swan Districts recruit Tyson Lane has today announced that he will retire from playing football after just two rounds of the WAFL season.

Lane has been suffering from a chronic knee injury for a number of years and the pain has not subsided this year.

Lane said his retirement would benefit the young players at Swans.

"I believe I can offer Swan Districts much more in a coaching capacity in 2007 than I was going to be able to on the field. With me leaving the side there’s a real opportunity for a young guy to step in to the side. I believe the club has some very talented young players that will relish the opportunity to step up,” he said.

Lane played 68 AFL games and kicked 49 goals for Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs.

Opens the door now for Phil Pense to step up !

Obviously had enough of the GOOSE who masquerades as the President!!

In a statement released by the Swan Districts Football Club this morning, former senior coach Steve Turner announced the following as his reasons for stepping down from the position.

“I love the Swan Districts Football Club and I always will. In reality over the last 4 months I have juggled two huge responsibilities. I don’t honestly believe that this is helping the Swan Districts Football Club achieve its desire to play finals football and ultimately win a premiership in the next few years.

“I would like to thank all the sponsors, members, supporters, staff and board for their friendship and camaraderie they have given me over the last 5 years. I have life long friends at the club and many years of memories that I will treasure forever. In particular I would like to thank the players for there huge efforts over the last five years and really hope they can have a very successful season from here.”

Turner coached Swans for five seasons for 43 wins, 40 losses and one draw.

Assistant coach and dual West Coast premiership player Chris Lewis will coach the side for this week’s home game against East Fremantle, while the club searches for an interim coach.

To tell you the truth, when Turner was first appointed coach of Swans I didn't like the decision. I learnt to grow with it and he proved me wrong in my original thoughts of him.

Considering what finance and player resources were available to him during his time, he done alright and he brought finals action to our club which we hadn't seen in a very long time. Thanks Steve! :thumbsu:

What's next for the Swans?

Candidates for coach:

Chris Lewis - would surely have to put his name in the hat with his coaching experience in country Victoria and the Northern Territory.

Chad Morrison - so far as proved that he has a future in coaching considering the performance so far of the Swans Colts this year.

Wayne Blackwell - experienced coach with East Freo and Perth and knows what's its all about to coach. Part of the Swans family now, son Luke played league for Swans before being drafted to Carlton and has a younger son in this year's colts side. My money is on Wayne..

Won't be surprised if they approach him but will be surprised if he takes it on.
