Has anyone who is playing to finish as high as possible int he overall rankings considered the early upgrade ?

With the considerable early price rises of Curnow, Heppell, Duigan, Tapscott, Darling etc. Has anyone considered bringing in an Iles or a Hibberd and then upgrading to a quality back or mid ??

Personally i'm waiting till the end of round 6 but just wondering if anyone is biting the bullet early ??

Re: The potential early upgrade ?

What is the point of doing it early? If you wait another week or two you will know if Iles and Hibberd retain their spot in the side and if they do you can trade them in at a later date before they go up in price.

In the mean time your current rookies will continue to increase in price and will leave you team in a better position as it doesn't include speculative rookies who have yet to play. Why would you trade based on speculation now when it costs you nothing to wait two weeks at which point you can make an informed decision?

Playing devils advocate. Someone might feel the potential extra 30 or 40 points this week is worth it or maybe for particular reasons with how the byes have worked out it might work for them !

Re: The potential early upgrade ?

Why trade out Curnow when he is averaging over 100? At the moment he is putting out premium scores while only costing you $100K.
If he stays at this pace he will not leave my team, cash cow or not.

Are you Dr Dream Team by any chance?

Re: The potential early upgrade ?

He's just saying that with 24 trades this year it might separate you from the pack a bit to get some keepers in earlier than other SC's. I don't think it's worth it, but I'm mainly going for a league win. Who knows though? Getting an Ablett or a Chapman in a couple of weeks ahead of the pack could be a masterstroke. Probably depends a bit on how much cash you've already got in the bank though.

haha come on pal as i said i am playing devils advocate. If you read above i said i'm not trading till after the 3 team byes are completed. But i do see some sort of merit in someone taking the big gamble and getting that extra keeper in earlier. If you can get a Dane Swan for example and he averages 150 over the next 2 weeks and lets say trade out Curnow who averages lets say 75 ? Is that potential 150 points worth it ?

It depends on what you are looking for a league or overall win. If you are prepared to take a risk then potentially it could come off and you would subsequently look like a genius. In contrast, if it backfires you will look like a dolt.

While I can't see how the upsides make this worthwhile if you are going for an overall win it could be the winning masterstroke if it comes off :thumbsu:

Re: The potential early upgrade ?

Early aggressive trading only pays off if you're doing the right trades (hindsight is a great thing), and it is more of a move you'd only do if you were going for overall position. In saying that at the end of the season there is usually a combination of players you can start with that will win the overall comp without making trades.

Thats me alright....forget the league win l'm after the money . l'm only around 65000 from the leader and l'll start my run soon.....

Re: The potential early upgrade ?

Yep you should upgrade as early as possible to get an advantage against your opponents. Trading out Curnow/Heppell now could net you an ultra-premium.

Re: The potential early upgrade ?

Is a very tough call. Im currently sitting 18th overall, and the temptation to cash in early to strengthen my backline is tempting. May do 1 or two rookie swaps just to make sure i set myself up going forward

Thanks for starting this thread...there has been some early aggressive trading in the past by previous high finishers...the benches are so strong this year, with the GC guaranteed starters that taking a risk might pay off. I have been sitting here for an hour looking at what to do with Knights/Otten/Krakouer.

I am just saying, I understand waiting for them to reach full potential but this year our benches are loaded with cows. Not saying it is right but I am looking at a premium backline upgrade that I wasn't considering earlier. I guess two games to watch Hibberd/Isles/Wallis et el. I am confusing myself typing lol

I am not convinced but thanks for playing devils advocate...getting the jump on some who use past tried and true upgrades might be worth the gamble.

Also, why are the sarcastic belittling posts necessary????????

Not all of us are A Grade statistical SC geniuses and read this board to improve our gameplay.

At least, back up your sarcasm with logical reason.

Or better still if you have nothing constructive to add - say nothing!

Very well said. Likely to fall on deaf ears though.

I have some issues with Batchelor Karkouer Otten Richardson probably close to the end of their useful life.
I am considering trading in Champan this week depending on what his BE is even though he has the bye. League win is my goal obviously.

Agreed 100%.

Some people think there is one way and one way only of playing and anyone that doesn't conform is ridiculed :thumbsd:

ps Jars the thing to consider re Chapman and league win is that he has a bye at the business end of the season. It is the second week of finals so if you are confident you can win and get the week off he is perfect

If i was you i definitely would. An upgrade 2-3 rounds earlier than the other guys in the top 20 could be very beneficial.

It could also hurt. You just need to work out what will give you the most amount of points and a bigger advantage over the rest of the pack.

Realise this but I have no Geelong players currently (bizarre really going on previous years) and last year, my decision to go Roo to O'keefe when Roo went down ended up costing me bascially three trades and ruined by overall season. Still was the right thing to do to get Champan as I should have had him from the start. Looks like I should have this year also. With the extra trades I think I can risk going Chappy early.

So far used two trades, Foley to Curnow and this week Duffield to Adcock. Both looking ok so far (v early I realise).

I would hardly call my posts sarcastic, the Dr Dream team reference was tongue in cheek as he has adopted the same strategy as the OP has suggested.

I have also contributed my thoughts on the matter and my views on what might happen if he did or didn't go through with the proposed idea. How is this not constructive?

Well said. I live O/S now so the cash business is just not an option for me and with time differences often I have to finalise my teams a day before lockout. So we all have diff reasons for playing.

But I was thinking of cashing either this week or next and fixing my Otten problem or grabbing a premium as I have plenty of cash to do it.

If one was to get an ablett, swan or maybe a chappy in the fwd line..

Presumably swan after his bye next week..
Chappy after his bye or another week or two??
What about GAJ??

Or what about m.murphy? Seems to be scoring well.

not much point getting GAJ before their second bye, there are other premiums coming down (selwood, judd, hodge) and GAJ is also sure to come down a fair bit more. still think he's definitely worth getting on after that as he'll still pump out some big scores and is a lot more unique this year than in the past.

also has anyone seen the team and trades of the guy who won it last year? i had a look and he seems to have upgraded hard early, having most of them done by rd 12. he also ended up copping a donut in the last two rounds. very risky but get it right and its a huge advantage.

Perhaps they wanted Selwood while his price was low.

He also generally has a week or two off late in the regular season to be cheery ripe for finals. I made myself a vow to not trade him in due to this risk at the start of the season, no matter how much he kills it. I did, however, also vow not to cull off Krakouer, which I did this week.
