I am generally never nervous about the footy, but last night I was really worried. So to win was a huge relief. Obviously their bad kicking helped us. It took us a long time to adapt to the flooding tactics. I hate playing the Bulldogs because this is the way the game always ends up. Although they were unlucky with their kicking you have to remember a lot of them were tough shots and some were rushed. We should have been at least 3 goals down at 1/4 time though.
After that I thought we controlled the game. We built up a good lead in the 2nd quarter, but that was lost once White went off. They got 4 quick goals when White went off. I think that tells you something.
Then to kick 10 goals in the 2nd half was a great result. We got the ball moving quickly which is what you have to do against them. I knew we pretty much had it won at 3/4 time. The Bulldogs would have to be stuffed after not only having a 6 day break but all the running they have to do as a result of their tactics.
The tactics told us that they thought they could not beat us on talent, so they had to resort to negativaty to try and win.
Woewodin was great. Back to Brownlow form. Neita and Schwarz did very well, in particular Neitz considering he had 2-3 people on him all the time. The backline held up pretty well and players like Wheatley and Whelan just give us so much drive. I am also impressed with Vardy. He takes such strong marks. He did however kick 2 goals 4 last night.
In the end it was a great night, and after that result I was really proud to be a Melbourne supporter. After all, "WE ARE MELBOURNE".
Another thing, the Bulldogs are not to far away from a win. Certainly not the worst side in the Comp. I think they just have to try and be more positive in their play.

very well said!!

i too was nervous for the first quarter, and quite a bit before the match, but i though we could get over them. i must say, that if they kicked between the 2 BIG sticks  then they may have won, but having said that, we might have just come at them harder. anyways, anrew, you said it all, i just wanted to agree and say what a fantastic match it was! :D

I agree with you 100%, but I would like to add a few things.
The bulldogs flooding went against them in the end because we got the better of them in the way we grabbed the balls from the packs. I thought the game was gonna be physical and it was, but it was so good to see that Melbourne were just as physical in return, they didn't lay low and they certainly didn't take the blows and thats one big improvment from last year. Theres a sense of toughness around the ground which I really like, we seem to be more confident in our skills and our ability thus making the players more comfortable to lay a tackle or run hard for the ball. The win was fantastic, no doubt about that. Not only are we second on the ladder with only one loss this season, we also proved people wrong. No longer are we the team who has had a bit of luck in winning so many games, but we are now the team that made it to the grand final in 2000, the team who has skills and ability and strength.
I think Neale did a great job yesterday, although I didn't understand why Nicho was on the bench for the whole of the last quarter although he wasn't injured??!! Either was we handled the flooding very well, and beating the bulldogs was a true testament that we are back because despite their position on the ladder, they are a very good team!
GO DEES! :)
