Personally I think it's a top idea to name all 3 as captains and I really think it will work and be long term.

On another side related topic though. Most captains are midfielders, yes. Midfielders can run the whole ground and give their leadership whilst forwards cannot.

With a 3 way model, 1 forward, 1 mid and 1 back you've pretty much got the ground covered, no? You know what they say.. 3 heads are better than one.

Riewoldt praises Thomas' legacy
The Age
February 27, 2007 - 4:24PM

Sacked St Kilda coach Grant Thomas has won praise from star forward Nick Riewoldt for the legacy his much-criticised rotating captaincy policy has left the AFL club.

Riewoldt was named as one of three Saints' co-captains for 2007 along with midfielders Lenny Hayes and Luke Ball.

Riewoldt, Hayes and Ball were the last three captains under Thomas' reign, and were voted in by teammates to share the job under new coach Ross Lyon.

Rather than rotating the captaincy, Lyon has decided to implement the co-captains policy used so successfully by his former club Sydney last season.

But Riewoldt, one of Thomas' staunchest supporters who admitted being shocked and disappointed at his axing last year, couldn't resist paying tribute to his former coach.

Thomas had been roundly canned at the time he introduced a then-unheard of captaincy rotation.

"It's a real testament to the rotating policy we had under Thommo," Riewoldt said.

"We've really got an abundance of leaders.

"The three of us up here today - there could have been another three guys that were equally as qualified to do the job."

Lyon wasn't present at Tuesday's announcement for personal reasons, with football manager Ken Sheldon announcing the three captains.

But in a statement Lyon said: "All three players are equally respected by the playing group and the voting process highlighted that these three players could not be separated in selecting a single captain.

"All three are best and fairest winners of the club, All-Australian representatives and demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities."

With Riewoldt and Hayes still battling injury, Ball is likely to get the job solo on Friday evening when St Kilda play Collingwood in a practice match at Princes Park.

The Saints' co-captains policy is for this season only, and will be reviewed at the end of the year.

But Riewoldt believes the contrasting characters of the three leaders, as well as their different positions on the ground, will help the new policy work.

"Across the board we'll have the things we consider to be good leadership qualities covered between the three of us," Riewoldt said.

"The things we may be a little deficient in, the other two guys will be there to help in that area."

The Saints have also appointed an eight-man leadership group, with the three skippers joined by Nick Dal Santo, Fraser Gehrig, Aaron Hamill, Robert Harvey and Justin Koschitzke.

good on them i reckon. i know im not a saints fan but i reckon these 3 blokes are top football players and are all great leaders around the club and top blokes
i wouldnt be able to say who i reckon would do a better job so why not give it to all three
