THE popular perception is that Terry Wallace had his choice of either the Richmond or Hawthorn job at the end of the 2004 season and elected to go with the Tigers

If the senior job at these two clubs came up now, I know where most aspiring coaches would send their applications.

And just how does he know this? Did he survey every aspiring coach? Piss off, shit for brains. Garry Lyon has always been a ********

:) LYON is an arse clown!

Article makes plenty of assumptions...such as Roughead "is going to be a very good player", while Tambling "needs to start having greater iompact on games".

Roughead has shown three parts of f*** all, while Tambling DID have a "great impact" on Friday night, playing his best game for the club after a couple of injury interrupted years!!

Xavier Ellis ....... disposal was diabolical on Sunday. Still a long way off it, but Lyon Chop has him pencilled in as a future superstar already!

Credits Clarkson with moving on players such as Mark Graham (who had one good year at the Tigers before calling it quits at the right time), Jon Hay (who they sneakily and deceptively offloaded to the Kangaroos), nathan Lonie, Lance Picioane (who was damn no good) and Peter Everitt (who basically wanted out....can't take credit there for moving him on given they played tough and rolled over for a second round draft pick).

Franklin being overlooked for Tambling is old news. Been discussed on Big Footy for two or more years ....the groundbreaking Lyon joins the debate today!!!!!!!!

It is just a matter of what spin you put on it. He labels the Beaus Muston and Dowler, Matt Little, Tom Murphy and Max Bailey as "blue chip" ......... based on what????? Barely played a game between them.

Absolutely nothing to separate them at this stage from Riewoldt, Oakley Nicholls, Hughes, Casserley, Edwards.

Pure specuylation on who might be good and who might not.

Bottom line - Hawls were plain woeful week one and have gone on to beat two teams who are a combined 0-6.
Our form suggests we would blunder the opportunity, but I'm sure on form we would have beaten both Melbourne and Kangaroos. Luck of the draw!!!

Exactly right goldust. Lyon has been caught up in the hype of Hawthorn and has failed to look closer. What have their results been this year? Yes, 2 wins, but 1 was a horrible game. And a loss that was an insipid performance in round 1, far worse than anything we've served up this season.

He says we will have to rebuild all over again! We have as many kids on the list as the Hawks, yet when they haven't played they are blue-chippers, and ours are apparently ignored completely.

Do some research Gary before writing again, save yourself the embarrasment.

"Flounder"?

****knuckle Gary will use the seafood terminology at ever opportunity, won't he?

Can't beat this though -

Something fishy about Premiership Cup

26 April 2005 Herald Sun

ONLY a lucky few get to feast from the premiership cup.

For those of us who never got the opportunity, we can only wonder what culinary delights must be on offer once the lid is lifted off football's holy chalice.

In my days as a player, I always envisaged it as the ultimate seafood banquet, overflowing with the finest and freshest fare from the ocean.

A seat at the premiers' dining table on Grand Final night is the most coveted position in football.

To get a booking you need to be able to pay for the privilege. Payment comes in the form of talent, commitment, perseverance, sacrifice and discipline. And hunger.

The bountiful spoils of a premiership will not truly be sought without the most ravenous of appetites.

And there is growing evidence in the early stages of this season that some of the pre-season premiership favourites may have their bellies full, and the crayfish, prawns, Moreton Bay bugs, oysters and scallops may not have the appeal they once did.

The Brisbane Lions have, rightfully, eaten like kings for three of the past four years.

The feast at the end of 2001 would have been the sweetest of all. But it became clear early the next year that the table was quickly cleared and the focus was on a return booking.

And they honoured that commitment, and the likes of Lynch, Voss, Lappin, Keating, Hart, McRae, Akermanis, Power, Pike, White and the Scott boys returned to sate their appetites, which had grown as the year unfolded.

Not too many teams in the history of the competition would be confident enough to push their seats back, leave the table, wander up to the maitre d' and casually slip $50 into the palm of his hand and say: "Keep the booking. We will see you same time next year."

But the Lions were, and they were not about to fork out the late cancellation fee. For the third year in a row, the crayfish population was ravaged by a pack of hungry Lions, whose appetite for success seems to know no bounds.

I don't care how much you may love your seafood, but after three massive helpings it doesn't quite hold the appeal it once did.

There has been only one team with the appetite and the ability to "pay" for four premiership feasts in a row and that was the Magpies in 1927, '28, '29 and '30.

The Lions won the right to play for their seats last year but a team that had never savoured the banquet on the last Saturday in September took the table. It was positively starving, and played like it.

The Lions were left to dine on a nice selection of steaks and kebabs, and some healthy salads. It was no seafood platter, but it may just have been enough to fill the hole.

Which brings us to this year.

Brisbane still has the capacity to pay for a place at the finest dining hall in football.

Lappin, Voss, Black, Brown, Akermanis, Michael, Johnson, Power, Leppitsch, Charman, Keating and the Scott boys will ensure that their credit card never gets knocked back.

But do they have the appetite to drive them there? Does the meal still look appealing or are they content to eat well enough to just keep the rumble away from their bellies. I don't think the crayfish has the same appeal to the Lions as it once did.

And what of the other contenders? Did Port Adelaide not quite clean up well enough after gorging themselves at last year's sitting?

Was the odd prawn head missed in the clean-up, and the stench only now finding its way to our nostrils?

I don't think so, although the loss of one of the hungriest of last year's premiership team, Josh Carr, has not helped. No, Port may just be suffering from a little indigestion at the moment, and feeling a little off colour. Take a Chad Cornes, Dean Brogan, Shaun Burgoyne, Roger James and a Byron Pickett with a glass of water and your appetite should return soon.

St Kilda appears to be salivating at the prospect of the big banquet.

Aaron Hamill plays like he hasn't eaten for five years, and won't until he gets to rip the head off some unsuspecting crayfish in September.

That's the sort of hunger the Lions once had.

Grant Thomas has a team that can pay the price of the bill as well. They are looking good.

The same goes with West Coast. I don't think there is any coincidence that the man who sits at the head of the Eagles table is the man who sat alongside Mick Malthouse at the head of the Eagles' most recent premiership buffet.

John Worsfold's American Express card is of the platinum variety, and his team looks greedy enough to go all the way.

You look at Dean Laidley and one of the first things you think is that he could do with a good feed. And his team plays exactly the same way.

It may be the hungriest team of the lot, and the fact it shares top spot on the ladder, undefeated after five rounds, is testament to that.

The only query is whether the bill may be too large at the end of the day. But then again, the Roos have exceeded most people's expectation up to now. Except, of course, their own. There would not be too many people who would begrudge the Roos the right to eat like kings.

The Demons and Cats can pay and they seem hungrier than they have been for a long time.

Respectively, it has been 1964 and 1963 since their last substantial meals, so they should be.

Sydney does not appear ready to take its place at the big table. Some are hungry but not talented enough; others are more than talented enough, but appear to be pretty happy with the offerings they can partake in at the moment.

The Crows are interesting. You get the feeling Neil Craig knows what's on the menu, and has made a good start in tantalising the taste buds of his group. But they are at the prawn cocktail stage. The crayfish is a little way off yet.

The others can only dream at this stage. There will be the occasional visit to the Flower Drum, as Hawthorn demonstrated with its magnificent victory against Brisbane 10 days ago, but even then its young tummies may not have been ready for the richness of the fare.

As long as the hunger for a spot at the ultimate dining table is there, then there is hope. Finding a way to pay is another thing altogether.

Worst article I have ever read.

I agree Goldust, most of the propaganda he has dished out is assumptions on players.

Jarryd Roughead looks like a lost little boy when he plays, cant see the fuss - not to say he wont develop - but he has proved absolutely nothing yet he'll be a very good player? You know this Garry? Looked into your crystal ball..

The other names I also have to agree with you Goldust, wouldn't know them and havent done anything at senior level, yet they will be stars, whilst our young guys at the same age are no good, who haven't proved themselves. What a crock of bulldust.

I think Hawthorn will go past us this season, but I think we will be the better team in the future with our picks. We need our senior guys gone, whereas the Hawks need there senior guys there for the clubs to succeed. There in lies the difference.

I have had a close look at our list(and have changed my opinion), one or two more bonafide young guns from this draft in the areas needed and we'll be right.

Let these moronic media personalities say what they will, like the Bulldogs were the flavour of the last two years, they are just realising the aren't strong enough to battle with the big boys and are back tracking, the same will happen with the Hawks. Let us fly under the radar, let em think we are no good, I tell you when the names of Jarrad Oakleigh-Nicholls, Travis Casserley, Jack Riewoldt, Shane Edwards, Daniel Connors, Andrew Collins, Carl Peterson, Danny Meyer filter through the team and the likes of Deledio, Tambling, Polo, Pattison, Polak and McGuane develop into big gamers we will be better than we are now with the dismal senior players we have.

Back to Garry Lyon - i'll save this article and shove it back in your face when once again it is proved you have no idea!

its more to do with the planning and stucture than the players

gary lyon is a joke because 1) he is too afraid to coach an AFL team and 2) he is mates with Danny Fkwit Frawley.

Garry hasnt got it right on the Hawthorn end though, its a heavily biased article.

Miller did enough to concvince me we're going no where fast last night, Garry's done nothing.

For those who freuquent the main board and Bay 13, I'm thinking Gary Lyon might be operating under the pseudonym 'Hodge2Franklin':D

But seriously, Gary Lyon is a Richmond troll pure and simple, always has been and always will.

It's funny how all of Hawthorn's youngsters (even those under injury clouds) are suddenly all 'blue chip'.

Welcome to the Herald Sun style of argument Gary

I'm not saying that in the long run it won't be generally true but at this stage it's simply a case of highlighting what suits your argument and burying what doesn't.

Using the Andrew Bolt formula

keep whinging all you like and act like the world is against richmond but open your eyes for once fellas

the only way to catch up to hawthorn is to hope they just miss out on the finals and we get the priority pick

if we get another wallace miracle and finish 10th it would be laughable

Would Lyon have written such a negative Richmond article if we were like the Hawks 2-1 or 3-0. Dare I say if we were sitting at that level at this poinnt most of the media would have jumped on board telling the football world to watch out the sleeping giant that is the Tigers has awoken.

The funny thing is Lyon speaks about apparent Blue Chip kids the Hawks have still got waiting in the wings like Muston, Dowler, Murphy, Little & Bailey yet fails to talk about Riewoldt, Casserly, Edwards, Connors & Thursfield can still be brought into a Tigers line up. Talks about how kids like Gilham, McGlynn, Roughead, Ellis & Taylor have played roles in their 2 wins then question the value of Pattison, perhaps Lyon forgets this kid was thrown to the wolves and asked to match up against more experienced ruckmen over the first 2 weeks and handled himself ok to some degree, McGuane who has not been touched up by an opponent yet is a fair way off it, Howat who is strugglling yet I suppose it is not something a kid with less than 10 games of AFL is allowed to do. Will Lyon say the same thing when Ellis struggles or McGlynn struggles, doubt it very much because this article will be forgotten about.

It seems Lyon has gone down the path of other media and gone for somewhat of a sensationalism style of writing for this article, making it seem like the cupboard is bare at Richmond, which is wrong the difference is our youngsters are given the opportunity to develop at VFL level while the Hawks through necessity rather than choice have had to play their youngsters at AFL level. Time will tell which side went with the better option.

You think the Hawks will play finals after beating two 0-3 teams?

They still have a long way to go as well, 4-1 start last year and then lost 11 of 12.

We wont do as well as last year but Garry's article is ridiculous.

Good to see a Tiger supporter without Rosie coloured glasses on for a change

After 3 more games Lyon is just as likely to turn around and slag off the hawks and say Richmond is the better club.

Footy is a fickle game. Takes more than 3 games to form such a substantiated opinion, proving that gary Lyon has no football credibility whatsoever

Lyon is a smug little twerp who changes like the wind. If Caro slags Richmond I can cop it....but Gary? No way.

why cant they make the finals?

dees and freo are shot and the dogs are starting to beleive their own hype, its wide open and if ever there was a chance for us to do something it was this year and we stuffed it

hawks will finish just outside it i reckon

lol at people bagging lyon and saying he has jumped on hawks bandwagon this has nothing to do with win/loss ratio it is an article about how the 2 clubs have gone in their seperate directions since finishing 15th and 16th in 2004

the start to the 2007 season is merely a kpi

And who's finished ahead in those 2 years? Our formula has proven better to this point.
We were wooden spoon favourites this time last year and Hawk supporters were high-fiving each other.
I've watched all 3 of Hawthorn's games this year - they are going to get found out sooner rather than later. Their gameplan is non-existent, their coach lacks imagination and their players lack experience. A volitile mix for disaster.

who gives a shit who finished ahead of who the last 2 years both clubs did nothing

it all starts next year when both teams are expected to make the 8 and i know which team is getting the head start

That's right, it will be us with the head start because for starters we have an experienced coach as opposed to Peter Rohde mark II.

Hawthorn may have better talls, but we are not building a team based around that. It is not 1970 anymore. We are building the fastest most skillful team around. It may not work, but if it pays off it will take other clubs years to catch up.

People can bar up over Buddy Franklin all they want. Big deal. Look at the crap end of their list and it is full of duds or kids that are unproven, despite what Garry Lyon may say. Hawthorn are no better than us.
