Time for a new captain

And Tay has what should be the final word on this;

What a shock a player stating the status quo, you know towing the party line backs who's in charge.

Never seen that in politics or clubs backing a coach with the sword of damocles hanging over there neck.

Shaw. Wouldve stayed too! In fact Beams would been a great captain too.
My leadership group would've been.
Shaw Captain.
Beams/Pendlebury vice.
Reid Sidebottom Varcoe Cloke leaders.
Shaw showed a lot but being able to captain a footy team wasn't one of them. Unless you want Captain Brainfade dominating the headlines every weekend.
Beams and captaincy material??? With his "quad" injury? o_O You call that in fact, I call it in fiction
Cloke became leader, got demoted after 1 year. Let me guess, Bucks fault?
Reid could hardly get on the park in the past 2 yrs. What exactly are his leadership credentials?
Varcoe only joined us recently. Love the man, we all do. Too bad we don't have a larger indigenous contingent, he would be great for the transition into AFL life. Hope he stays connected to the club after his career ends.

Let me see count, the difference with the current group and there are 1 , 2 ,3 . No wait, let's do it the other way around, easier. I give you Varcoe, that is 1, the rest absolutely rubbish suggestions.

Don't remember Shaw having too many brain fades under Mick. As he has become older he's matured a lot more on the field for GWS. He would definitely be my captain.

We are talking about the same drink driving, car crashing, Didak lying, umpire pushing, illegal betting Heath Shaw yeah?

Hahaha dayne beams is not a leader. No flipping way. Heath shaw could be sometimes. But therein lies the problem - cant be captain 1 minute and the other minute giving 2 goals to angus monfries within the space of 20 seconds - in a final.

Too wayward

Heath shaw would be my leader of the backline - thats as far as it goes i reckob

I would love to see Grundy in there. Let him bulk out a bit and give him the mandate to be more mongrel

There's that word 'mongrel' again. Wish we could bottle it up and give it to the players! Sometimes we look so meek. The old hard men and tough nuts of Victoria Park must cringe sometimes. Where's Tuddy when we need him?

Oooh cherry picking and rewriting history with future events. My fav discussion style.
Didn't he get arrested for being drunk etc etc during his first months at GWS.
That would have certainly made the right impression in his first months of captaincy at Collingwood.
And reiterating the old discussion, would Shaw shown those traits while he was still with us or did he need the huge kick up the back side first. Some people need to have responsibility to start acting like it. Leadership group is as far as it goes for Shaw.
To give a little credit to your idea of giving a larrikin the reigns: Tex Walker is doing alright at the crows. Not exactly the same as Shae but sometimes it works out.
So
When Maxwell retired and we needed a new captain, Pendles was the best choice.

God is everyone in football so braindead that they can only see one kind of leader?

Just because a player is not demonstrably angry, yells at teammates, clocking 45+ possessions a game and generally just being a broody twat... means they're not leadership material?

Can anyone verify that Pendles does NOT talk quietly to teammates on game day to coach them what they're doing well and what they're not?
Can anyone verify that Pendles isn't actively involved with the leadership group to ensure team instructions are carried out?

And this 'cheap ball' rubbish - poor commentary by McGuane. Guy breaks his ribs, plays injured and still performs better than 2/3 of the comp. Gets himself right and then dominates in the centre. He's never been a bash/crash kind of player and I doubt we'd ever want him to be.

Taylor Adams, Adam Treloar, Darcy Moore... all worthy candidates for next Captain but PPL PLS. Back your current captain in. Champion club man, make no mistake. These 'whispers' that teammates don't support him is the reason that Robbo prints the kind of bullshit he does.

welcome to the forum of the living braindead. actually it was mick mcguane who proposed the change to Taylor adams. mark Robinson might have taken up the baton. evidently mark did have an original thought before his first drink years ago but now he just uses other people's ideas.

Every aspect is open to discussion when the team fails to perform. If the club is in the business of developing leaders, at some stage you're going to have to have the discussion if someone now has better credentials.

Where's Tuddy when we need him?

Many will recall Tuddy getting replaced as captain after he and Len Thompson tried to be fairly paid.

The following year, 1971, Tuddy became the first captain of Victoria who was not captain of a club team.

Tom Hafey, Victoria's then coach, was questioned about this and replied: "We are not here to talk about Collingwood's mistakes."
